Janis Mackay: On a Northern Shore | Blackwell's Bookshop

Edinburgh
Arts Literary Arts
We are delighted to be welcoming Scottish author and storyteller, J anis Mackay , to the shop on Tuesday 16 th September at 7pm , as we celebrate the publication of her captivating modern gothic love story steeped in Celtic mythology, On a Northern Shore . Set against the stark beauty of Scotland’s far north during Hogmanay, the narrative begins with lobster fisherman Rob Sinclair making a poignant offering to the sea spirit, the Selkie. That same night, the arrival of Mairi, a mysterious newcomer charged with a mission of vengeance from beyond the grave, disrupts the village’s quiet existence. As Rob and Mairi are irresistibly drawn to one another, the lines between love and revenge blur, revealing a tangled web of secrets and shifting identities. This enthralling tale will appeal to readers of literary fiction, fans of gothic romance, those intrigued by folklore and mythology, and anyone visiting the Highlands and Islands of Scotland – especially the North Coast 500. Perfect for book clubs and individuals seeking a rich, atmospheric read, On a Northern Shore promises to enchant readers of all ages, making it a compelling addition to any bookshelf. Janis Mackay is a Scottish author and storyteller residing in Portobello, Edinburgh. Born in the heart of the city, Janis’s adventurous spirit led her to live in diverse places, including France, Palestine, Greece and the far north of Scotland. Although she trained as a journalist on Fleet Street, she soon realised her true passion lay in creative writing. After years of exploring the world, Janis returned to Scotland. She honed her storytelling skills as a drama teacher and voice coach, which enriched her writing journey. Her breakthrough came with her debut novel, Magnus Fin and the Ocean Quest , which won the Kelpies Prize in 2009. Janis’s love for language and storytelling stems from her childhood. She is pursuing a PhD that explores the intersection of self-reflective creative writing and mythology while continuing to write and engage with readers through her novels. - Doors: 6.30pm, event starts: 7pm, please arrive early to secure a good seat. Tickets are £3 and there is a Ticket & Book option which includes a signed copy of On a Northern Shore. The bookshop has level access, events are seated and speakers use microphones. Bethany Christian Trust and Edinburgh City Mission are delighted to be joined by Friends International to organise our third annual Christian Befriending Conference on Saturday 20th September in Craiglockhart Parish Church. Increasing numbers of people are finding themselves lonely; older people and newcomers to our city struggle to make meaningful connections with others and ironically, people leaving homelessness can lose the community they found on the streets. Where is the church in all this? Befriending services provide one way for the church to create community for those who find themselves on the margins, and to discover that transformation is a two-way process. As we befriend, we learn and grow in unexpected ways. Just as we are being transformed by a relational God, lives around us can be changed through relationship and connection. A weekly home visit or regular outing to a cafe can have an eternal impact. If you are already an experienced Befriender, be inspired by stories of transformation, and connect with a wider network of Befrienders here in Edinburgh. And if you have never heard of Befriending, or if you are not yet involved, come along and find out how it is different from other kinds of friendship, and how you can join in! Beano's Directors of Mischief and Mayhem, Mike Stirling and Craig Graham, reveal their top tips for creating laugh-out-loud stories and pictures. They'll share secrets from their time as Beano readers, editors and children's book authors to help you create a story deserving of a place in the Library of Laughs! About the speakers Craig Graham and Mike Stirling were both born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, in the same vintage year when Dennis first became the cover star of Beano. Ever since, they’ve been training to become the Brains behind Beano Books (which is mostly making cool stuff for kids from words and funny pictures). They’ve both been Beano Editors, but now Craig is Director of Mayhem and Mike is Director of Mischief (ooh, fancy!) at Beano Studios. So, mischief and mayhem are 100% guaranteed with their appearance at the National Library of Scotland. When you book an event, your personal information will be held and used by the National Library of Scotland and our third-party suppliers for the purposes of allowing you to attend the event and for audience research. In-person, Craigmillar Castle Park Description: Join us for a fun and unique workshop. We’ve all seen plant galls before, perhaps without even knowing that is what those weird growths were. But did you know that many of these galls are caused by insects which lay eggs into or feed on plant tissue? For this workshop we will meet in Craigmillar Castle Park (Edinburgh) for a gall-walk around the grounds. Throughout the walk, our workshop leader Chang-Ti will introduce the biology of galls and we will explore how to find and identify common galls as we rummage in the foliage, with plenty of time to ask questions, point out interesting gall formations and take pictures. The workshop will have a focus on oak galls; however we will explore other types of plant galls as we encounter them. Workshop Leader: Chang-Ti Tang is a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Edinburgh, using oak gall wasps as research subjects. After earning his PhD in Taiwan, Chang-Ti conducted postdoctoral research at the Smithsonian Institution and University of Edinburgh, developing expertise in specimen preservation, species identification, and DNA data analysis. Suitable for: Beginners (ages 16 and over) What to bring: Suitable outdoor footwear and warm clothing, waterproofs, lunch and a drink, notepad and pen. If you have one, please bring a hand lens and any relevant ID guides (some will be available). Please note that this workshop will be entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly. Cost: Free (donations to TWIC welcome). Please note that parking near the site may be limited and subject to fees. Choose either the free ticket type or the donation ticket type (minimum donation £1). Donations to TWIC will support our work in organising biological recording training workshops and events. If you prefer to donate directly to TWIC, please visit: https://wildlifeinformation.co.uk/support-us/make-a-donation/ . Travel: The site is located in South-East Edinburgh; it can be accessed by car with parking available on nearby streets (may be subject to parking fees).
