Join us for an enlightening discussion with Susan Mandell, a trailblazing female cantor whose career exemplifies the expansion of women into religious leadership roles during the 1960s. Having graduated from Douglass College, Mandell served as the cantor of Temple Emanu-El in Edison, New Jersey for an impressive 14 years at a time when women were not yet formally ordained. As one of the few female cantors in the 20th century, Mandell's remarkable journey sheds light on the progress of women in religious leadership. Although her story was almost lost to history, Cantor Kalix Jacobson of Temple Emanuel of South Hills rediscovered it through extensive research. Mandell will share her experiences alongside ethnomusicologist Dr. Gordon Dale, who will provide historical context.
