Discover the imaginary worlds of Victor Hugo, one of France’s most famous writers, at this exhibition of his rarely-seen works on paper.
Victor Hugo (1802–1885) was a leading public figure in 19th-century France. His books Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame were printed worldwide. As both a poet and a politician, during his nearly twenty-year exile in the Channel Islands, he came to symbolise the ideals of the French republic: equality and freedom.
In private, his refuge was drawing. Hugo’s ink and wash visions of imaginary castles, monsters and seascapes are as poetic as his writing. His works inspired Romantic and Symbolist poets, and many artists including the Surrealists. Vincent van Gogh compared them to “astonishing things”.
This exhibition follows Hugo’s preoccupation with drawing, from his early caricatures and travel drawings to his dramatic landscapes and his experiments with abstraction. It features some of his finest works on paper, which are rarely on public display and were last seen in the UK over 50 years ago.

On May 21, I took my parents to visit the British Museum. The tour guide was enthusiastic and professional. If I didn&#39;t have a tour guide, I might have finished the tour in half an hour. The main reason was that I didn&#39;t learn history and geography well. With the guide&#39;s explanation, the three hours passed very quickly. This is my second time to book Ctrip&#39;s tour guide service to visit the British Museum. I still feel unsatisfied. 🏰 Westminster Abbey, it&#39;s really shocking! 📍 It&#39;s located in central London, close to the Parliament Building and Big Ben. The church is a prominent representation of British Gothic architecture, towering spires, exquisite carvings and beautifully painted glass windows, each detail shows an unparalleled artistic charm. Walking into the church, as if through time and space, is the holy place of the crowning of the British royal family, witnessing countless important moments in history. It is also a resting place for many celebrities, and great figures such as Newton, Darwin, Dickens have slept here, making people respect their contributions. Walking around, you can feel the solemnity of religion and the deep historical and cultural heritage. The church&#39;s Henry VII chapel is exquisite, with a fan-shaped arched roof and densely carved decorations, like a fairy tale fairyland. Whether it is an architecture lover or a historical and cultural fan, Westminster Abbey is definitely worth a visit. I believe you will be deeply impressed by its charm like me. 💕 highly recommend it to everyone! 💕
