Continuum Choir, under the direction of conductor Harry Guthrie, invites you to an enchanting musical journey in the Chapel of Clare College, located in the picturesque city of Cambridge. This captivating programme explores the Lenten season through the evocative melodies of the Iberian Peninsula. Drawing inspiration from the seven liturgical verses of the Latin hymn, Vexilla Regis, the concert delves into the profound textual and compositional connections found in Iberian music. The performance seamlessly intertwines Gregorian chants with polyphonic arrangements, vernacular carols, and hymns from the region, offering a reflective and contemporary interpretation of the liturgical Vexilla Regis. The highlight of the evening is a captivating new commission by Cambridge-based composer Carlos Rodríguez Otero, supported by the esteemed Professor Eric Nye. This composition pays homage to the rich Iberian musical tradition that serves as the foundation of the concert. The repertoire also features masterful works, including Alonso Lobo’s Versa est in Luctum, Tomas Luis de Victoria’s Magnificat Primi Toni, Francisco Guerrero’s Ave Virgo Sanctisimma, and other lesser-known Spanish motets and songs. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Clare College Chapel by entering through the Porter's Lodge on Trinity Ln, and allow the Continuum Choir to transport you to the heart of Iberian musical heritage. Tickets are priced at £20 for General Admission, £15 for Clare Hall members, and £10 for students and children.
