Chisenhale Gallery presents Empty Alcove / Rotting Figure, a major new commission and first institutional exhibition in London by artist Dan Guthrie. Working primarily with moving image, Guthrie’s practice explores representations and mis-representations of Black Britishness. By deliberately experimenting with form and language, Guthrie probes the limits of visual representation – questioning not only what is shown, but what remains unseen or unsayable on screen. This exploration encompasses the politics of visibility itself, asking how race, memory, and subjectivity are shaped by the act of looking.

Walking among the Egyptian mummies, I came across the glass reflection of the Rosetta Stone. Under the cold stone folds of the Parthenon sculptures, there are always tourists looking up and frozen into silhouettes. The display cabinets are more crowded than the exhibits. It was frozen for 40 minutes, and the money saved by booking online was fed to hot cocoa. When the glass cabin was lifted to half-empty, the soles of the feet were numb. The night view is really amazing, and the whole river is like fluorescent paint when the purple aura is lit. When the leg was soft, I looked back at the purple aperture that collapsed into a rag. I thought: It&#39;s worth it, but I have to buy a fast ticket next time I die.
