While post-war Japanese architect Kazuo Shinohara is celebrated across Japan, the US and continental Europe, he remains little known in the UK. He pioneered the idea that ‘A House is Art’ but artistic responses to his architecture have so far been scarce. His designs for single-family houses reconfigured people’s understanding of domesticity but commentary on his work has excluded the voices and positions of women. In the centenary year of Shinohara’s birth, London-based artist Michaela Nettell is creating a book that brings together fresh interpretations of his 1961 Umbrella House by a group of women working across fine art, filmmaking, creative writing, architecture and Japanese calligraphy. Join the artist and her collaborators to hear more about their research, and pick up a copy of her newly-published pamphlet ‘A totally different world.’ The artist’s 8mm film study of Umbrella House will be screened alongside excerpts from Emily Richardson’s HOUSE WORKS, a trilogy of artist’s films about prototype houses built in East Anglia in the 1960s by architects known to be interested in cultural currents in Japan. Event chaired by architectural writer and curator Yuki Sumner. Attendance is free but booking essential.
