Experience a night of sonic resistance storytelling and music at the historic Jam Handy in Detroit on November 9, 2023. Join the Detroit Sound Conservancy as they celebrate and reflect on the legacy of the Graystone Collection. The Graystone Ballroom was a vibrant hub of Detroit's music scene for almost fifty years. In 1974, the Graystone International Jazz Museum opened, housing an exceptional collection of records, posters, and artifacts from the Graystone Ballroom. Although both the ballroom and museum are now closed, the collection, carefully preserved by the DSC, stands as a testament to the power of Detroit sound. 

From 5pm to 7pm, immerse yourself in an exhibition of artifacts from the Graystone International Jazz Museum. Savor drinks and light refreshments as you listen to oral histories and recordings from the collection archives. Then, at 7pm, be captivated by an extraordinary performance by the New Graystone Tribute Jazz Ensemble. Renowned musician and composer Ali Jackson will premiere a unique arrangement of music from the Graystone collection, expertly curated to honor this significant legacy. 

This unforgettable evening is presented in partnership with the University of Michigan Arts and Resistance Theme Semester and the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Don't miss this opportunity to experience the rich history of the Graystone Ballroom and Museum. We look forward to seeing you there! Admission is free.
