Gothic Returns: Fuseli to Fomison explores the persistent appeal of ‘the gothic’, a broad term that embraces some of the most darkly charismatic imagery ever produced.
Incorporating all things unsettling, mysterious, sombre and downright scary, this genre has its origins in the late 18th-century British Romantic movement. First defined by the medievalising novels of Horace Walpole (1717–1797) and the disturbingly sensual paintings of Swiss artist Henry Fuseli (1741–1825), it has since proven almost virus-like in its capacity to adapt and thrive across the centuries. Whatever outward form it assumes, the gothic has also shown itself remarkably true to its essential character: ominous moods, unsettling themes and a melancholy engagement with the past. Sometimes dormant but never fully extinct, the gothic impulse seems ready to resurface at uneasy junctures in history.
In Aotearoa New Zealand, it manifested in the early 1990s in cinema, art and fiction at a time of reckoning with the nation’s colonial record. The moment was subsequently hailed by cultural commentators as the birth of the ‘New Zealand Gothic’, but – as many have noted – precursors lurk everywhere in New Zealand art. Few collections are as well placed as Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki’s to engage with the gothic in its early and later manifestations.
Drawing upon iconic works from across the collection by the genre’s founders as well as by their contemporary Antipodean counterparts, Gothic Returns: Fuseli to Fomison unites old with new, playfully inviting viewers to enter the ever-enticing dark side of the imagination.

I would highly recommend visiting the Auckland Art Gallery as the exhibitions are thoughtfully curated and features both permanent and non permanent collection. We love the inspiring art by Robin White at the time we visited last December. There&#39;s a cafe and art shop where you can purchase unique crafts and souvenirs. Entrance is absolutely free.

The venue is slightly smaller, but the content is still very rich, and rainy days do not affect the fun at all. It is very suitable for playing with the nearby Mission Bay. The souvenirs inside are very cute and I bought several plush 😘

The whole experience is great and it is a good place to understand New Zealand&#39;s history and culture. The museum is quite big, it is worth a long time to visit, there are many interactive exhibits, especially suitable for walking the baby. There is also Chinese service, recommended.

Although Mount Eden is not high, it is overlooking the entire Auckland from the top of the mountain and has a particularly wide view. The remains of the crater are clearly visible, and the grass covers it, a peaceful green. It is not difficult to go up all the way. You can also encounter sheep on the hillside. The leisurely appearance makes people unable to take a few more photos. The wind on the top of the mountain is very strong, but it is also very fresh, and the mood is particularly clear. It is the kind of good place that does not need tickets and does not need planning, but can leave a very deep memory.

Central Park in Auckland is not like the landscape park in the city, closer to a natural forest. The linden trails are winding, and the tall trees on both sides make it seem like they have entered the pristine greenery, with thick fallen leaves and soft soil at their feet. The air is full of plant fragrance, suitable for jogging, walking dogs or just walking quietly. There are also several sculptures and small bridges hidden along the way, adding a little fun. Although not far from the city, you can completely get out of the rhythm of the city as soon as you enter the park.
