Food security supports mental stability.
With a trade war looming, many of us are concerned about the future cost and availability of food. Natural or other disasters could bring additional challenges to our food supply chain. Learning basic skills to support ourselves and others in creating food security, both in the present and in an uncertain future, has perhaps never been more important. Let's have some fun doing it – in community with other like-minded people. Come for this 2-part workshop to learn the basics of growing vegetables, what can be done when space and sunlight are limited, and how to use mylar bags for long-term food storage. Best of all, meet others who live in your area. This could be an opportunity to support each other, and who knows? Maybe some of you will decide to share garden plots?
This workshop will cover:
Building blocks for plant life
How to start your first garden
Companion planting
Urban gardening
Community gardening
Mylar bags and how to use them for food storage
Types of food that can be stored this way
Other tools and supplies required when storing with mylar bags
You

Small seed bundle for your first garden
A gardening reference sheet
A community garden network
Hands-on experience sealing mylar bags
A checklist to help you prepare storing food this way
Your presenters, Osa and Larry
Osa is a local queer leather tailor who is passionate about self-sufficiency within our system, and has fostered skills in gardening, garment making, foraging, and leather crafts. As a child in Barbados where their grandparents were farmers, they grew up with a love of the land, learning to grow food from an early age. Now living in Vancouver, Osa has drawn on this knowledge to adapt to our climate (as well as to space and sunlight constraints) and to cultivate food gardens in Vancouver’s urban environment. They are excited to share this knowledge with you and to inspire you to do the same!
Larry will introduce basic food security practices, including long-term food storage through the use of mylar bags. He is passionate about supporting individuals and communities to find peace of mind through preparedness for possible food shortages, and views this process as a necessary first step towards solving our collective challenges.
Larry is an artist and industrial designer, as well as a friend and tenant of the Birdhouse.
This event is part of a series of Birdhouse workshops that will focus on building tools, skills, and community care frameworks for surviving and thriving in an uncertain future. Stay tuned for more!

It is really a once-in-a-lifetime train experience. In September 2019, the weather in Canada was very suitable. It was amazing to take a train and experience the colorful mountains. The train company held a grand farewell ceremony before departure for the train at Vancouver Railway Station. This gave me a pleasant surprise. Not only did the train have Chinese service staff to introduce the scenery along the way, but there was also a food experience. Sitting on the train and looking at the scenery of the Rocky Mountains and eating Michelin meals, it really can&#39;t be described in words. The ticket price is indeed not cheap. I was a little hesitant before booking, but after the experience, I felt that the money was worth it. Also, I thought it would be boring on the train before leaving, but I didn&#39;t expect there were still a lot of activities. I couldn&#39;t stop taking pictures, especially the glass dome, which was like watching an IMAX blockbuster. Soon the wonderful day passed. The Queen&#39;s favorite train is indeed well-deserved, making my wife and I feel very noble. . .
