Is it time to abolish college football? A conversation with Nathan Kalman-Lamb, Derek Silva, and Lindsey Freeman
About the event:
Simon Fraser University sociologist and author of Running Lindsey Freeman sits down with sociologists Nathan Kalman-Lamb and Derek Silva to discuss their new book The End of College Football. The conversation will confront the harm and racialized exploitation that saturate the sport and interrogate whether it belongs within higher education, or, for that matter, without.
About the guest speakers:
Dr. Derek Silva is Professor of Sociology at King’s University College at Western University. His research examines the intersection of sport, labour, inequality, exploitation and social control, with a focus on harm and violence in sport. In addition to his academic work, Silva is an active public writer whose work has appeared in TIME, The Guardian, Los Angeles Times, Al Jazeera, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Daily Beast, Jacobin, Sportico, and more. He is also co-author of The End of College Football: On the Human Cost of an All-American Game and co-host of The End of Sport podcast.
Nathan Kalman-Lamb is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of New Brunswick where he teaches on social theory and sport. He is co-author of The End of College Football: On the Human Cost of an All-American Game (UNC Press, 2024) and author of Game Misconduct: Injury, Fandom, and the Business of Sport (Fernwood, 2018). His work has appeared in Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, The Nation, The New Republic, The Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Daily Beast, Al Jazeera, and many other venues. He is co-host of The End of Sport podcast.

Standing on the top of the park, you can see downtown Burnaby and the mountains in the distance, as well as downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park and the Lions Gate Bridge. The park is rich in vegetation, and you can smell the fresh air of the pine forest while walking along the forest trails. The park is famous for the Kamui Mintara sculptures created by Japanese sculptor Nuburi Toko and his son, which symbolize the harmonious unity of humans, animals, nature and God. The sculpture group consists of 29 hand-carved logs with animal images such as brown bears, owls, salmon and killer whales engraved on them.

If you are looking for a good place to relax around Vancouver, Deer Lake Park in Burnaby is definitely worth a visit! It is like a paradise in the city, with beautiful lakes and mountains.
There is a flat wooden boardwalk around the lake, which is perfect for walking, jogging, or enjoying nature with children and pets. The lake is sparkling, seagulls and mallards are playing in the water, and snow-capped mountains are looming in the distance. The park is free, the lawn is suitable for picnics, and kayaks can be rented on the lake. In spring, flowers are in full bloom, rhododendrons are particularly romantic, and outdoor concerts in summer are even more lively. Especially in autumn, Deer Lake is even more beautiful, and it is a great place to enjoy maple leaves around Vancouver. Parking at Deer Lake is also very convenient, highly recommended!

Central Park in Burnaby is a free public facility built for local residents. It has a small golf course, tennis courts, a children&#39;s play area, and several kilometers of trails. The park is densely populated with trees and there are many waterfowl around two small ponds. It is a great place for walking and jogging.
