Originally, the people of Hawaii wanted to honor the achievements of Lot Kapuaiwa (Kamehameha V) on his birthday (December 11). However, Kamehameha V, a humble chief, chose to honor his grandfather and postpone the holiday as far as possible to Lot's birthday, thus making June 11 a national holiday. Thus, June 11, 1872 became the first-ever Kamehameha Day.
