Felix Mendelssohn est un compositeur pas tout à fait comme les autres. C’est d’abord l’un des rares musiciens dont la vie a été authentiquement heureuse. Génie précoce, ses voyages de jeunesse lui inspirent la superbe Grotte de Fingal, ou la prodigieuse Symphonie n°4 dite « Italienne », torrent de mélodies et de rythmes irrésistibles. Pour interpréter le plus tardif Concerto pour violon n°2, David Grimal s’affirme lui-aussi comme un violoniste et chef d’orchestre pas tout à fait comme les autres. Depuis son archet, le musicien imagine une forme de direction collective, où les musiciens de l’orchestre s’écoutent comme dans un grand ensemble de musique de chambre.
