Join us for our next edition of New York on Film and immerse yourself in the gritty, action-packed chaos of John Carpenter’s “Escape from New York” — where Manhattan is a maximum-security prison, and the only thing standing between disaster and total anarchy is one eyepatch-wearing, cigarette-chomping antihero: Snake Plissken.
After the film, stick around for a talkback with film critics Neil Rosen (
NY1

) and Michael Gingold (

). Rosen and Gingold will break down why this cult classic is still so much fun decades later. They’ll dig into the film’s darkly humorous take on urban decay and society’s collapse (1980s-style), why NYC makes the perfect post-apocalyptic playground for Snake’s high-stakes mission and how “Escape from New York” became a blueprint for the dystopian action genre, inspiring countless movies and video games.
So grab your leather jacket (and maybe an eyepatch?) and prepare for a night of dystopian thrills, over-the-top one-liners and big-screen nostalgia. Whether you’re a hardcore Carpenter fan or just curious why people still talk about this movie, this event will deliver a mix of cinematic fun and expert analysis.

Michael Gingold 
has been writing about horror films and their creators since he was too young to see them without a parent or adult guardian (though he did anyway), starting with his Xerox fanzine Scareaphanalia. Michael is a former editor for Fangoria, and has been writing for the magazine since 1988 and the website since 2000. He is also a regular contributor to Rue Morgue magazine and Rue-morgue.com, Delirium magazine, and Inverse.com, and has written for Birth.Movies.Death and Time Out New York in print and online, Scream magazine, and IndieWire.com. Michael is the author of the “Ad Nauseam and Ad Astra” books (1984 Publishing), the novelization of “Nightmare” (Severin), and “The FrightFest Guide to Monster Movies” (FAB Press).
In addition, Michael has directed documentaries and other bonus features, written liner notes, and taken part in audio commentaries for numerous Blu-rays, including the award-winning doc “Twisted Tale: The Unmaking of ‘Spookies’” for Vinegar Syndrome. He has created over 25 featurettes covering the filming locations of various genre movies, including the New York City-based “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Bad Lieutenant,” “The Last House on the Left,” “C.H.U.D.,” “Brain Damage,” “Nightmare,” “New York Ninja,” “The Astrologer,” “Massage Parlor Murders” and numerous Italian horror films.
Neil Rosen
 is an Emmy-award-winning entertainment critic/journalist based in New York City. He is currently the entertainment critic for CUNY TV and PBS, is a frequent on-air contributor to The Today Show (Weekend Today In NY on WNBC) and can be heard regularly on Sirius XM Radio. He is the host, creator, and producer of the popular, Emmy-nominated national TV roundtable movie critic show “Talking Pictures With Neil Rosen.” He was formerly the entertainment critic/reporter for NY1.
He is the Chairman of the NY Chapter of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the largest film critics organization in the United States and Canada, representing more than 200 television, radio and online critics.
