Join local artists in Portland for an exciting and creative Paper Mache Mask Making Workshop! This three-hour workshop, led by experienced artists Sam Spadafore and Hale Linnet, will bring your Halloween shape-shifting dreams to life. 

During the workshop, you'll have the opportunity to spend two hours creating unique paper mache forms, followed by one hour of painting and decorating. To make the most of your time, it's recommended that you arrive with a clear vision of the mask you want to create. Feel free to bring sketches, reference photos, or Pinterest boards to help inspire your design. 

While a basic mask will be provided as a starting point, you're welcome to push the boundaries and go bigger by using chicken wire and cardboard available at the workshop. If you choose this option, please be prepared to finish the painting and decorating at home.

Sam Spadafore is a local performance artist with a background in theater, dance, and musical creative expression. Hale Linnet is a talented figurative painter and sculptor. Together, they were part of a team of queer artists who created the impressive paper mache puppet, The Doula of Liberation, which made its debut at this year's Portland Pride parade. Keep an eye out for The Doula of Liberation at an upcoming art party on Peaks Island!

All materials for the workshop will be provided, but feel free to bring any special items you'd like to incorporate into your mask. Just remember to wear clothes that you don't mind getting messy.

Please note that the workshop venue is located in an old building without an elevator, and there are three flights of stairs to reach the studio space. If you require a table and chair instead of working on the floor, please contact the organizers in advance to make arrangements.

The workshop operates on a sliding scale cost of $25-$50, allowing you to choose a price that feels accessible to you while supporting the artists who have organized the event. Consider your own generational privilege and identities when making your decision.
