From a young age, Kusama has suffered from visual and auditory hallucinations. Her mental health condition has had a tremendous impact on the artist’s creative activities. In the 1950s, driven by her own obsessions, Kusama created an enormous number of drawings, resulting in an opportunity to make her breakthrough as an artist. After relocating to the United States in 1957, the artist began to create a series of works that could be described as ritual of “self-obliteration,” where all existence is engulfed in infinitely repetitive patterns such as polka dots and nets while the self is immersed into a boundless world. These works express a desire for salvation from psychological disorders and simultaneously reflect her intention to liberate society from absurd oppression through happenings and other forms of expression.

This is a place where you can step into the &quot;polka dot universe&quot;. Planned and named by the &quot;polka dot queen&quot; Yayoi Kusama herself, this private art museum in Shinjuku District, Tokyo, has been extremely popular since its opening in 2017. She uses &quot;infinity&quot; and &quot;repetition&quot; to depict the spiritual world, which is as bizarre as a fairy tale, but hits the heart directly.

The entire art museum is in a white minimalist style. In the five-story building, each floor has a different world-
🟡 The basement floor is a store (selling exclusive peripherals)
🟡 The 1st to 4th floors are exhibition areas, and the content of each exhibition will rotate
🟡 The top floor has an open-air balcony with a view of Tokyo
Each ticket has a 90-minute visiting time limit, and you need to enter on time during the reservation period.

The exhibition we visited is called &quot;The Universe I Love Forever&quot;, and the main visual installation is Yayoi Kusama&#39;s iconic pumpkin sculpture and mirror space.

Infinity Mirrored Room
The moment you enter, it feels like you have traveled to another planet. The child&#39;s eyes are brighter than the lights, and he whispered, &quot;It feels like a dream.&quot;

2️⃣ Rooftop balcony
After the exhibition, you can go upstairs to take a break. From the balcony, you can see the streets of Tokyo from a distance, and there is also an artist&#39;s inscription wall, which is very suitable for taking pictures.

🛍 The small shop is also fascinating. Polka dot kettles, limited edition postcards, T-shirts, key chains... Each one is as exquisite as a work of art. The child chose polka dot stickers, and we chose her classic &quot;Infinity Pumpkin&quot; commemorative cup.

The area is very nice and interesting. Need to be on time based on the booked time slot as visitor will enter based on batches .   If you would like dressed up for the tour, can be there early to buy yourself the costume and magic wand . It is very nice experience .

It was last minute decision to go as it was raining all morning but luckily in started to clear up around 2pm. I got combo ticket meaning you will go all the way up to the highest point. Getting ticket from machine was straight forward process. Ride on the elevator was experience on its own as you go up 36km/h. Mt Fuji wasn&rsquo;t fully visible as expected, but cloudy weather made the view much more interesting and dramatic. Worth seeing and spending not more then 30-45min overall.
