About the Project: A Sustainable Transformation
The £36 million University of Bristol Dental School, designed by BDP and delivered by Kier Construction, relocated to 1 Trinity Quay, a former office building in Bristol's heart. This strategic retrofit prioritised sustainability by reusing the existing structure, significantly reducing upfront carbon. The transformation has increased student capacity by 25% and created a state-of-the-art teaching and treatment facility, providing free dental services to the community.
Design Highlights
BDP's design masterfully converted open-plan office space into a cutting-edge dental school, featuring:
Octagonal Treatment Bays:
 A unique central space with dental bays and teaching areas, offering waterfront views.
Flexible Access:
 Spaces designed for extended learning hours and collaboration.
Inclusive Design:
 Soundproofed rooms for neurodivergent students.
Green Travel:
 Replaced 50 car spaces with 200 secure cycle spaces, promoting sustainable transport.
Material Reuse:
 Extensive reuse of existing carpet, ceiling tiles and raised access floors.
The six-storey retrofit now houses 119 dental chairs, clinical labs, teaching areas, offices, and breakout spaces, fostering a collaborative environment. This tour is ideal for architects, designers, students and professionals interested in retrofit, sustainable design and healthcare architecture.
