Room From A View's premise is simple, and - for anyone who's recently got an eye-watering quote from a builder- relatable: Local builders charge £200,000 + for a 60sqm single-story extensionWhich local estate agents reckon would add around £100,000 to the property valueWiltshire homeowner Robert won't risk his life savings for such a poor return. But like millions of us, he remembers seeing The Man Who Built His House In The Woods off Grand Designs. Unlike millions of us, he spent a year in the woods filming The Man Who Built His House In The Woods, Sussex coppicer Ben Law (producers See Through Together test-screened Ben Law's Woodland Year at the Bath Arms in 2023 - now available on the same YouTube channel that will host Room From A View).  Robert's own construction experience extends to assembling flatpack furniture, not particularly well. After seeing Ben pass on his skills to his apprentices, however, he reckons it can't be all that hard to learn how to stick two bits of tree together. After all, he muses:
'If mediaveal peasants built the cottage I live in using what they saw around them, and twenty years ago a woodsman built an entire house for less than £30K what's stopping me using the same methods to build a modest extension for less than £100K?'.
