Almeida & Dale opens exhibition by Joseca Yanomami curated by Bruce Albert. "Urihi mãripraɨ – To Dream the Forest-Land" showcases drawings created from the artist’s dreams, in dialogue with the Yanomami spiritual tradition. The work of Joseca Yanomami (1971, Uxi u River, Yanomami Indigenous Territory, Brazil) focuses on translating Yanomami cosmology into visual narratives, especially through drawings, giving shape to stories from ancestral times and the multiple dimensions of the forest-land, a concept that goes beyond the physical space and brings together the forest, rivers, spirits, animals, and humans in a living and interdependent system, visible only to shamans. In this somewhat dreamlike atmosphere Almeida & Dale inaugurates, starting on August 16, Urihi mãripraɨ – To Dream the Forest-Land, a solo exhibition of Joseca Yanomami curated by Bruce Albert, a French-Moroccan anthropologist and author, along with Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, of the books The Falling Sky (2015) and O Espírito da Floresta [The Spirit of the Forest] (2023). The exhibition Urihi mãripraɨ – To Dream the Forest-Land presents around 30 works that are sort of dreamlike “screenshots,” stills from a metaphysical film unfolding through the ancestral narrative of Yanomami shamanic chants.
