When the War Ended: Voices of Czech-American Eyewitnesses
An audio-visual presentation by Julie Urbišová
Julie Urbišová’s talk will feature remarkable personal stories about survival, hope, and new beginnings shared by Czech immigrants who lived through WWII.
She collected these accounts as part of her work for 
Paměť národa
 (
Memory of Nations
), one of Europe’s largest oral history projects. Since 2008, it has provided open access to firsthand testimonies from those who endured Nazism and Communism, ensuring that history’s darkest times are never forgotten.
Following the presentation, Julie will hold a live conversation with several Czech-Americans who lived during the war.

Julie Urbišová
 is a Czech-born journalist who studied Journalism and Ethnology at Charles University in Prague. Growing up near Ostrava, in the Hlučínsko region, which was part of Germany during WWII, she developed a deep interest in people’s stories. She was taken by the war memories in her village, where all the men, including her grandfather, were forced to enlist in the Wehrmacht German army during WWII. In 2007, Julie moved to New Orleans to continue her studies at the University of New Orleans and has since settled there with her Turkish husband and two daughters. She is the author of 
Doma v Nola
 (At Home in Nola), a book about New Orleans’ history and culture based on her stories for Czech radio. She also hosts the podcast 
Doma ve Státech
 (At Home in the States)
. Since 2021, Julie has collaborated with 
Memory of Nations
, traveling across the U.S. to interview Czechs and preserve their stories.
This event is organized by the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) in collaboration with the Czech Center New York and with the support of the Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association (BBLA).

To see the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island, you need to buy tickets in advance, the earliest boat is 9 o&#39;clock. The boat dock is in Battery Park, very close to the Wall Street Copper Bull. The park itself is not big, but you can also stroll around. You need to check in before taking the boat, and then line up, so you have to arrive early. Get on the boat or stand in front of the right side of the boat to see the Statue of Liberty with the best view. The second or third floors are fine. The boat time is about 20 minutes. After going to the island, it is mainly to see the Statue from multiple perspectives. There are pedestal tickets and crown tickets. If you have bad legs, don&#39;t buy crown tickets. There is also a museum on the island, the interpreter can be picked up for free, there is Chinese. After returning to Alice Island, you can&#39;t disembark if you don&#39;t want to see it, and you can come back directly to the pier.

The Empire State Building is one of the tourist attractions in New York City, receiving a large number of tourists every year. It is recommended to queue up at the time of the reservation ticket, and let in after the point, no need to wait; the diversion guide is well done, not too congested; the observation deck is windy and cold in May; the ticket price for watching the sunset in the evening is a bit more expensive, and make an appointment early.
