Domaine de Fontenille

Excellent hotel with excellent restaurant in the most beautiful hotel setting I have ever seen in the Provence.

I celebrated a very big birthday at Domaine De Fontenille last summer and could not have asked for a better place to celebrate. The service was absolutely first class and my guests and I were spoilt rotten from start to finish. The rooms were fabulous, very comfortable with lovely views. The celebration dinner I had with my friends and family was truly wonderful, made even more special by eating outside. Another highlight was the picnic in the vineyard. Big thanks to all of the staff who made my big birthday so memorable but particularly to Clara and Oceane who were so helpful in making it happen.

Domaine de Fontenille was the perfect base from which to explore the Luberon mountains and valley. This traditional 18th century bastide has been tastefully updated, and offers multiple terraces and patios from which to comfortably enjoy the serene outdoor environment. The property is sprawling, with beautifully landscaped gardens, vineyards and wooded trails. Our room had a private terrace with cafe table, cafe chairs, two Adirondack chairs and flowering plants. The bedroom featured a very large king sized bed, huge bathroom with soaking tub , shower and double sink, plush robes, a fridge and minibar /snacks and a welcome tray of small pastries and a bottle of the Domaine’s Rose. We also did the complementary wine tasting at their tasting room across the road, and enjoyed sampling all of the wines. Breakfasts were ample, featuring fresh baked sweet breads, brioches, pastries, clafoutis, fruit crumble, charcuterie, jams, self boil eggs, and various fresh juices. A peaceful and beautiful way to start and end each on the day on the terrace, beneath the towering plane trees and overlooking a mossy fountain with its resident frogs. We also ate dinner in the restaurant twice, which was delicious, but offered too limited a seasonal menu for more than a couple consecutive nights. I would suggest they have one different daily special for guests who stay a few nights. The pool is heated and was mostly pleasant, but when we were there, we were swarmed with gnats that live in the muddy grass surrounding the pool. It was also impossible to keep one’s feet and shoes clean and management might consider pool decking to upgrade the pool area. Parking is also up a dirt hill in the woods, though staff will happily attend to your needs and valet park your car. Staff was uniformly friendly and helpful. While we stayed here we also visited the towns of Lourmarin, Roussillon, Cucuron, Apt, La Bastidonne, and Silvacane Abbey. The Domaine was a comfortable and convenient base for our visit to this beautiful region .

We absolutely loved this property. It is exactly as beautiful in person as it is in the photos. We stayed four nights in late October and felt that was a great time to be there. There was sun, it was warm enough to go for a dip in the heated pool, and there were no crowds to be found. We spent hours just reading by the pool and by the fountain, so relaxing. The staff was universially kind and professional. We are so grateful to the front desk and winery staff who helped us sort out shipping wine back to the States when we realized we were going to have a snafu with our flight going through Canada. Breakfasts were a huge variety of baked goods, cheeses, muselis, etc. On the weekend they also offered eggs made to order, I don't know if they do this every day during the main season. I was surprised there weren't more hot dishes, but we were very content with what was available and throughly enjoyed having breakfast on the terrace every morning. The lamb at their more casual restaurant, La Cuisine d'Amelie was insanely good - highly recommend. We had a not-great experience at the Michelin restaurant on site though and would recommend sticking to the more casual one or any of the great restaurants a short drive away. Sound does travel in from the terrace and the hallways at night - we didn't find this bothersome, but if you're particularly sensitive to that you might just want to pack ear plugs. Highly recommend staying here if you're in the area! We would love to return someday soon.

Loved staying here - the pool, spa, restaurants, and rooms were all excellent. They have bikes that you can rent and it was so much fun to bike to nearby towns and through the countryside. All staff were willing and able to speak English to us which we really appreciated. Great place for relaxation and loved the beautiful building and grounds. Highly recommend!

My daughter is there this week, solo, and cannot praise the physical surroundings enough. However, she is travelling solo and has been completely ignored by the wait staff at the restaurant. i have been messaging her for over an hour while they have not taken her order. This does not sound like a place that treats women travelling alone appropriately, Or maybe it's Canadians travelling solo that they scorn. Either way, shame on you, Domaine! She saved for this trip for months!

Wonderful and attentive service from check in until check out. The grounds are beautiful and very serene… Vineyard is directly across the road and this was the best location to drive to surrounding villages and other areas. We would definitely stay again, the general manager made himself known and checked in on guests regularly. No coffee service available in the room, however if you call to the restaurant in the morning they will bring it up to you at no charge. Breakfast was a standard “continental style” set up. Would recommend to anyone with a car, it would be difficult to catch transportation without it as it’s somewhat in the country and a little more remote. Wonderful experience!!!!

The staff was extremely helpful and friendly, the rooms were perfectly clean, the property itself is amazing as well. The pool is heated so we were still able to enjoy it at the end of October. We would definitely return as it was a near perfect experience.

We ate in the restaurant 'La Cuisine D'Amélie' The food was good but not as outstanding as we had expected and for which we were ready to pay. The service was fine when the staff relaxed.. The experience was spoilt however when a family moved in to the next table and they brought in a large dog. Are dogs allowed in top class restaurants? Why was it not left outside? The setting of the hotel is wonderful and the formal garden and vegetable garden are both superb. Our preference is the informal apero evening sitting outside in the week.
