AI Summary
An AI-summarised snapshot of real guest reviews
The Engel Obertal hotel boasts a prime location for hiking with scenic views, exceptional service from attentive staff, and a comprehensive wellness suite. However, guests find the pricing, especially for food and drinks, to be overly high relative to quality.

We were disappointed that the demi-pension evening meal on a Thursday in March was NOT the 5 course sit down meal (promised on the Engel's own website) at a table with a table cloth and comfortable chairs but a bistro table/chairs and a succession of samey self service buffet courses. On our second night it was a sit down five course meal. The chalets away from the main building are very good and would accommodate four people or a family in comfort. we enjoyed our chalet, and the spa facilities (once you can find your way around) are brilliant, maybe more lockers would help.

Beautiful, relaxing hotel surrounded by natural beauty. Exquisite ability of the staff to make it both, family friendly and relaxing for adults. My children will never forget the treks in the Black Forest. I will never forget the amazing food and the wonderful people from the hotel restaurant who turned each meal into a special occasion.

I have not written a review in a while but feel compelled to . I did a ton of research on a great wellness destination for a trip that would be after Norway and before a visit to France . For some reason when you do searches for great wellness destinations you get more marketing and ads and paid list , but I found this hotel after digging deep. There was no English translation on the website , which I kind of liked as I would prefer a real local place with great wellness and this place has hit it out of the park. We are big fitness buffs and are quite impressed with the fitness rooms. One contains cardio equipment and the other is used for classes and stretching and core. The hotel is within minutes to multiple running and hiking paths as well. The front desk can assist with what routes to take depending on your fitness level. Other reviews mentioned some rooms may be a bit older and we may be in one but it’s exceptionally clean and well taken care of and we love it ( junior suite ) The staff is exceptional . Daniel at dinner, Alexander at the spa for drinks, and ,any we do not know the names of but breakfast service , housekeeping, everyone has been exceptionally attentive . Food has been great as my wife is a vegetarian and I am not and the menu is always changing add a great wine list with very reasonable offerings . I’m in the construction business and have built or worked on many top properties and The dollars invested in this hotel is well noted and they did not cut any corners . Finishes and craftsmanship are really well done We will definitely be back and consider this one of our top hotels in Germany , especially if you enjoy wellness .

This is a historic hotel, a bit dated, but renovations are being undertaken. I worry they may lose some of its old German ambience. The setting is lovely, just outside this small village, with lots of walking trails to choose from. The pool areas and spa are quite wonderful. We were quite happy with the meals and the half board is more than worth it. The staff were gracious, and we had a large and beautiful room. I though prices were quite reasonable.

My husband and I decided to combine a trip from Wiesbaden to Stuttgart to see our dentist with a trip to the lovely Black Forest. Baiersbronn is loaded with nice properties as well as excellent restaurants, so I was spoiled for choice. I chose the Hotel Engel Obertal because it seemed to be the right mix of old school charm and modern convenience. For the most part, we really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Engel Obertal. Our room was very comfortable and offered a large balcony that overlooked the gardens. The shower was nice, and stocked with excellent Molton Brown toiletries. The breakfast buffet was huge and generous, attended by a kind staff. Parking was free, except in the parking garage, which we did have to use on the last night because the lot was full. The facilities were well kept and very beautiful. I especially loved all of the flowers in the balconies! My complaints about this property are pretty minor. For one thing, I wasn't that crazy about the food. We ate lunch on one day, and it was buffet style with somewhat limited choices, although we did get to try a couple of the cakes, which were delightful. Dinner was okay-- nothing earth shattering. I did like that they offered small portions for those who have a smaller appetite. But I didn't necessarily care for the assigned seating, even though I know that's kind of how it's done in resort hotels. For another thing, I didn't like the Muzak in the hallways and restaurants. I know most people don't pay attention to such things, but I happen to find background music really grating... especially if it includes panpipes. At one point, the song "Careless Whisper" was playing, complete with a panpipe solo. Sorry... I know it's petty, but I would suggest changing the station! Same thing in the bar, where a playlist of songs from the 80s and 90s played both nights we attended. It had the odd effect of making me feel like I was in a time warp. We did find the staff to be courteous and professional and the grounds are just lovely. It was also very kind of them to give us a parting gift of water, farmer's bread, and salt. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. I would book again and recommend this hotel to others.

The hotel is fabulous, the people are amazing, the facilities in the Spa are extraordinary and for a family break it should be perfect….but….we had a break to meet our aged parents, who we had not seen, like so may others, in nearly two years. Because of timing my wife and I had to work for periods every day…..impossible. Modern thinking hotels, of this calibre, need to have fast internet in EVERY room and public space, this hotel cost us hours literally running around trying to get wifi signals so we could send and receive email. The local phone signal also sucks, but that isn’t the hotel’s issue, the lack of service for guests certainly is. We love the hotel, the people there are wonderful and it is quite simply the most relaxing place we have ever been, but they simply MUST sort out the internet or we cannot recommend modern travellers, both family and business, go there.

The Engel Obertal hotel is beautifully located in the upper end of a sunny valley. We (3) stayed for four nights in 2 rooms. One room faced the road in front of the “Stammhaus” and was noisy at times, especially between 5 and 6:30am when either lorries passed or the early hotel delivery guys yelled at each other. The second room was housed in a different complex and quiet. The wellness area and the surrounding garden are fantastic and tranquil. Really enjoyable. The breakfast is relatively extensive and of good quality. The lunch, which is included, and we had only one time was okay. We had dinner at the hotel only on the last evening as we wanted to explore other restaurants in the neighbourhood. Pricing is fair and some of our dishes were good. My entrecôte was terrible as 2/3 were pure fat and I just left it on the plate. Even the waiter commented negatively on this piece of meat. But it still was included in the bill. Unfortunately, I was not at the table when my family paid. The complimentary water bottle in the room was a bit of a surprise as it was not replaced when empty, but perhaps this was a one off only. It is not about the money, it is about the experience and we had two, three issues to raise during our stay. A pity that we got the impression that the staff just doesn’t care. Having said this the staff is nice, but a more customer centric approach would be appreciated. Overall, I had a good time, but for five stars it requires a bit more work and service.

Katastrophe! Hat nichts mehr mit Gourmet Essen zu tun! Vielleicht ein Niveau von einen normalen Restaurant, mehr aber nicht. Das Essen war nicht fein, Sorry der Koch hat wenig Ahnung und kann nicht kochen!! So schade!!! Hier werden wir nicht mehr herkommen.
