Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house. A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. Come get a front row view from our property of beautiful highland cows and goats. We are nestled in the blue ridge mountains with gorgeous scenery all around. Also enjoy our hot tub fitted for 6 people on the patio. The property also has 2 miles of trails that are great for hiking and biking. We also are able to let you feed the cows and goats treats and show them some love. Come and enjoy peace, quiet and animals!The spaceThe private space in the basement has a kitchen, living room and dining room together, one bathroom, a laundry room and 2 bedrooms. One bedroom contains a queen bed and the other room contains 2 twin size beds. The kitchen comes with all the necessities as well. Outside of the house is a barn and a open field that holds most of the animals, so they will be towards the fence to say hi sometimes. We also have about two miles of trails on the property that are good for walking or mountain bike or dirt bike riding. There are green arrows through out the property to guide you as well. I personally ride through my property often on my dirt bike/mountain bike so if your interested in riding, that is an option as well.Guest accessAs you head up the driveway you will see a wagon on your right with a sign that says parking, you are going to want to turn right beside that and head towards the barn. There you will see a sign that says parking. We are 9 miles from Liberty, making it easy to visit your student. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, we rent our jet skis, and blow-up kayaks and paddle boards. Access to the river is a quick 8 minute drive.The home has 4 bedrooms, with 6 beds. There are also 2 camping cots available for use.The home is sitting on 1.5 acres with the forest behind. In the summer, you can enjoy catching fireflies at night. During the day, rent our blow-up kayaks or paddle boards and drive 8 minutes to the river to enjoy them. We also rent our jet skis if you are interested in driving to Smith Mountain Lake. Owners occasionally stay in separate basement apartment with private entrance. Within 25 minutes, you can enjoy fishing at three different lakes or multiple trout streams, or take a 20-minute drive to the James River. There is also an off-road ATV trail 15 minutes away. Further up route 151 into Nelson County, you’ll find dozens more wineries and breweries only 30-40 minutes away, to include Devil’s Backbone, Three Notch’d, and Bold Rock. For the active adventurers, you’ll find a wide range of hikes in the nearby Priest Wilderness, James River State Park, Mount Pleasant, and Crabtree Falls areas. Wintergreen ski resort is only a short drive away and offers year-round activities for the entire family. For golf enthusiasts, you’ll find the Winton Country Club only minutes down the road or Devil’s Knob course located on the Wintergreen property.
