Avoid this hotel – worst experience ever. This was by far the worst hotel I’ve stayed at. – Over an hour’s wait for food, every time – Room not cleaned unless we asked – They held onto my change for four days – At checkout, they tried to charge us over $500 for things we never ordered – including alcohol We’re clearly Muslim and don’t drink. Still, they insisted we pay. The manager didn’t want to meet us in person and only agreed to speak over the phone. We had to insist she come down. When she finally did and we went through the bill together, she realized it made no sense—especially the alcohol charges. Only then did she admit there may have been a mistake, after trying to make us pay for it all. Then, in front of her staff, this woman—who is not of African origin—said: “This is Africa, that’s just how it is.” We made it clear this had nothing to do with Africa. We’ve stayed at several fantastic hotels in Zanzibar with kind, professional people. The problem is this hotel, not the continent. The staff looked visibly uncomfortable when she said it. Terrible place. Unprofessional, dishonest, and led by someone who shows no respect for guests or staff. Only one person deserves credit: Kemal – kind, professional, and helpful throughout.

* Access: bumpy road to access the hotel. * Violation of privacy: the general manager entered the room with his own key without knocking / saying hi / saying sorry / saying goodbye, while we were resting in bed. We complained twice at the reception, but received no feedback / apology from the manager. This is clearly unacceptable. * Bathroom: urine smell in the toilets. * Services: no activities proposed.

We originally planned to stay at Blue Moon Resort for three nights, but we enjoyed it so much that we extended our stay for an extra night when our onward travel plans changed. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by warm, friendly, and hardworking staff who made us feel welcome. Check-in was simple, and we were given a tour of the hotel before being shown to our room, which was a nice touch. We booked a private pool room, which was clean, spacious, and very quiet—perfect for a relaxing getaway. The pool area was surrounded by several large palm trees, adding to the tropical atmosphere. It was great floating in the pool, watching the palm trees above gently sway in the wind. The room had all the facilities we needed, including a minibar, Netflix on the TV, and an Alexa station, making it feel very modern and comfortable. Housekeeping did a great job, with the room cleaned daily to a high standard. There were only two minor drawbacks: 1. The wardrobe only had four hangers, which wasn’t enough for both of us. 2. The shower temperature fluctuated frequently, switching between very hot and cold every 30 seconds or so. The food at the hotel was excellent. The restaurant, which overlooks the main swimming pool and the ocean, provided a great dining setting. One evening, there was a meat and seafood BBQ buffet with a live band and singer. Breakfast was also really good. It was à la carte, and I enjoyed the vegetarian option, which included fresh avocado, stir-fried vegetables, and fresh pineapple juice. Pastries and a fruit platter were also provided as standard. The hotel grounds are expansive, well-maintained, and incredibly peaceful. With only a few guests around, it never felt crowded, making it the perfect place to unwind. One of our favourite spots was the jetty, where we spent time relaxing on the loungers and swimming in the sea. The water was warm, shallow, and calm, ideal for a refreshing swim. We also took short walks along the mostly rocky beach, where we visited a Maasai community shop on the beach and purchased some souvenirs. A few other things to note: Payments: When checking out, the hotel had issues with their card machine, and after multiple attempts, they eventually sent me a payment link to settle the bill online. It’s best to bring enough cash (in USD) to avoid any issues. Massage: My wife had a full-body massage, which was reasonably priced and very relaxing. Hotel pets: The resort has dogs and cats wandering around, all of which were friendly and tame. However, there was also a monkey on a lead. He seemed eager to explore but was confined, which didn’t feel right.

We stayed for 6 nights in a standard room. The room was good size and bed comfortable. The refrigerator in the room looked old and you could not close the door on the cupboard that it was stored in. The room had 2 chairs and I thought there should also be a table. Even though the room was sprayed 2x/day you would still find ants or small spiders inside. This hotel says children are not allowed but still there are children in the common areas which we figured out were the owners. I didn’t mind but then other children should also be allowed. The Jetty is in need of renovations, there were loose floor boards and the foundation has corroded and I would not trust all the beams under there. And the final complaint is the admittance of Day Guest, which we saw at least on two occasions and once it was a group of 8 people who were rather noisy. But of course there were also excellent things, like the food which was always good and beautifully presented. The staff was also superb, everyone of the. Though our favourites were Ayoub and Diana, they were always smiling and joking and we missed them on their days off.
