Firstly the good things-the location is stunning. However, the hotel itself didn't match it. On arrival we were shown to a room on a cold third floor(No 31) and the room had no heating on, cobwebs on the ceiling and a TV the size of my ipad!. Asking if another room was available we were shown a room(No 8) that was better but the shower didn't work and we were told we could use the shower in the next door room! Third time lucky we were offered a room( No 28) that was a decent size, warm but still had a damp stain on the bathroom ceiling and also on the bedroom ceiling. Being late we accepted this but felt let down having seen the website showing lovely rooms. The restaurant wasn't open and all evening meal were served in the bar area. It had plastic table clothes on the table and the menu was what you expect in a bar area but the food was fine and the staff helpful. The Lounge areas were cold- lovely fireplaces but no fire and when we asked the staff if they were lit they said they would have to ask the owner -but the fireplaces remained unlit during our stay. Next morning the breakfast was served in a cool restaurant and was OK and the staff again were fine and helpful. We decided to give it a second chance and stay as we wanted to explore the area. When we returned our room had been "serviced" but the cups hadn't been cleaned the tea and coffee replenished and the small amount of toiletries we had had in our room had not been replaced. After a further night stay with no improvement we decided to leave a day early -very disappointed at what had looked a good hotel from its website. The whole experience was a huge let down having made a special trip to visit this hotel. It was cold throughout, unloved and neglected and certainly not worth the money. It had little atmosphere and with the communal areas being cold did not encourage you to linger. It is a hotel that has not kept up with the standards required in this modern age and with its poor maintenance and decor can not even be classed as shabby chic or quirky. I would certainly not visit again unless there had been major investment or change of ownership ( or both) which is a shame as it is a beautiful location in a lovely part of Scotland. One to be missed!
