Wu De Di Cultural Theme Hotel, located at Shuyuan Street inside the Pingyao Ancient Wall, is a grand compound since Xianfeng and Guangxu period in Qing Dynasty. The courtyard consists of 4 front yards, a backyard and a side yard, separated by doors and halls. There are 3 middle halls and 5 Chinese cave houses in between the second and the third yard, hanging the plaque of Wu De Di before it. 5 southward buildings siting at the cave house with a circle yard surrounding, and a kitchen yard in east, this traditional compound demonstrating feudal ethical code vividly, as a Chinese old saying goes the dignity of the noble family is supreme. To protect this precious historical site and shine its greatness, the owner decided to restore this compound in 2015 with a certain faith "restore it to its original form". Pingyao Tianjuan Garden Inn | The Time and Space Imprint of Ming and Qing Dynasty Shanxi Merchant Mansions
Tianjuan Garden, a deep courtyard residence favored by time. This 5.7-acre Ming and Qing Dynasty ancient building was once the glorious mansion of the wealthy Jig family in Pingyao. Now, as a key protected historical building, it stands quietly between the hustle and bustle of West Street and the tranquility of the ancient city.
【A Courtyard Encompassing Past and Present, Every Step Reveals Splendor】
Nestled against the cultural landmark Pingyao Film Palace to the north and adjacent to the bustling pedestrian street to the east, it is within easy reach of the Rishengchang Draft Bank and the County Government Office. To the west, the ancient city gate is in sight, and just beyond the city lies the "See Pingyao Again" theater. The high walls and black tiles shield from the outside world. Stepping inside, it feels like falling into a dream where past and present interweave.
【Twenty-Six Rooms, Twenty-Six Kinds of Elegance】
The guest rooms are scattered among the three-story embroidered-lattice pavilions, Tianhe Courtyard, Qifeng Courtyard, and Fulu Courtyard. Each room is furnished with Ming and Qing Dynasty antiques, while modern amenities flow through the carved window frames. The Red Thread Pavilion's hidden connections, the tea and ink aroma of the multi-functional hall in the central courtyard, and the aroma of Shanxi cuisine in the restaurant all narrate the "wealthy and refined" lifestyle of the Shanxi merchants.
【Architecture as Epic, Details as Wonders】
The layered eaves are like a frozen epic of the Shanxi merchants. The carved brackets and screens in the brick and stone work reveal the artisans' devotion. Despite centuries of wind and rain, the weathered beams and pillars still exude the former opulence - every brick and tile here tells of the merchants' ambition and composure to "dominate the world's trade".
【Leisurely Stroll Through the Four Seasons, Every Angle a Picture】
In the morning, climb the observation deck to watch the smoke rise from the ancient city's black tiles. At dusk, lean on the railing and watch the setting sun gild the eaves. In the courtyard, the shadows of flowers dance on the walls, and koi fish play in the water. A pot of tea and a game of chess are all that the former owner enjoyed in his "slow world".
——Staying at Tianjuan Garden, you are not just staying at an inn, but half of Pingyao's history.

It was Women's Day, and it was another Saturday and Sunday. My wife and I took a break from our busy schedule to visit Pingyao Ancient City. We booked this hotel online. From the moment we booked, the hotel manager contacted us. Meeting us at the high-speed rail station was a pleasant surprise. We also gave my wife flowers for Women's Day (though I hadn't already given her one) and a beautiful jewelry box as a souvenir. This stay was absolutely perfect! The service was impeccable, from the front desk to the housekeeping staff. The rooms were spacious and bright, well-equipped, and the bedding was soft and comfortable. The hotel's location is also fantastic (right in the heart of the ancient city). Both the amenities and the service were top-notch. Every detail was meticulously thought out, and they were always ready to help. (The tour ended at 10:30 PM, and the hotel manager was waiting ten minutes early to take us back to the hotel.) It was an impeccable stay and I highly recommend it to any discerning traveler! This hotel completely exceeded my expectations!

The overall style of the hotel is Chinese with the ancient charm of Shanxi merchants. The room is decorated in the traditional style of northern folk houses, which allows people to fully integrate into the life of the ancient city. (It's a pity that I didn't take many photos of the hotel, so the reference for everyone is a bit weak 😢)
In terms of facilities, as a new hotel, there is a very convenient direct drinking machine, each room has independent Wi-Fi, the TV can support screen projection, and the bathroom is equipped with a disposable toilet pad suitable for smart toilets. (I was quite surprised to have these facilities in the ancient city!)
The environment is very clean. I am a person who is very picky about the environment of the hotel when traveling abroad. This time I stayed for four consecutive days and was very satisfied overall! ! The aunt will also come to clean the sanitation in time to ensure that the room is always clean and comfortable~
The hotel is located on the bustling South Street (I looked at many hotels, and later when I was wandering around the streets in the ancient city for the last few days, I found that this hotel really has the best location, which is also very lucky. I finally chose this one~), if you want to go shopping and eat very conveniently, you must choose this one! (Believe me!!)
The most important thing is that the owners are a couple with very good personalities (the elder sister is very beautiful and the uncle is also lively and cheerful hahahahahahahahaha), it is really happy to meet a very good inn owner when traveling! (We can chat with each other in our spare time, and they arranged a car to Qiao's Courtyard for us in a considerate and timely manner, and also enthusiastically picked us up at Pingyao Ancient City Station)

The selection of B&Bs in Pingyao Ancient City is truly overwhelming. After repeated rounds of searching, I finally settled on Xingshengjiu. The experience exceeded my expectations, and I truly made the right choice.

1) Arrival: Immediately contacted via WeChat upon booking. Upon arrival, a sightseeing shuttle was picked up from the Guanbei parking lot outside the city, and the staff warmly greeted me.
2) Tours: Proactive suggestions and maps were provided during outings. Even sightseeing shuttles were arranged for trips outside the city.
3) Every time I encountered the hotel staff, they were enthusiastic and helpful.

🛏️Rooms: Brand-new facilities, modern comfort
1) A two-story, two-courtyard, two-story courtyard house, designed in the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The tatami we booked was spacious and bright. The room was modern in design and amenities, including a tea table with Xiaodu automatic control. 2) The 4-meter king-size bed was high-quality and very comfortable. 3) The bathroom had separate wet and dry areas, a powerful shower 🚿, and thick, soft towels. The pink Lefen hairdryer was both stylish and powerful.
🍵Breakfast: Jin-style snacks and aged vinegar tasting
Whether it's the small buffet on the first day or the nine-square set menu on the second day, you can savor local specialties. The bar also offers four flavors of aged vinegar: healthy Polygonatum odoratum vinegar and Ganoderma lucidum vinegar, as well as beauty-enhancing red date vinegar and mulberry vinegar.
💁♀️Value-added Services and Amenities
1) The Starbucks location is a unique feature, with guests receiving a complimentary Starbucks coffee and afternoon tea. 2) A laundry room is also available.
Stayed for two nights and the overall experience was very good, five-star praise.

The Jing's Residence (Pingyao Jingzhai Kezhan) is a courtyard-style hotel located on East Avenue in the heart of the Pinyao's ancient historical district. The building in which the hotel is housed was once the former residence of a Qing Dynasty silk merchant. The Jing's Residence consists of four courtyards connected by corridors paved with black bricks in the ancient Chinese northern residence style. On offer are 19 rooms and suites outfitted with modern conveniences and comforts while preserving the original structure and all of its ancient natural charms. For guests convenience, check-in at this hotel occurs in rooms, forgoing the need for any line-ups. The lobby, freed of a front desk, has as its focus a fireplace, repurposing the hotel entrance from a procedural role to a place wholly devoted to furnishing guests with an atmospheric public area. From the lobby, guests can access the hotel's dining outlet, which serves Chinese fare. Guests can also make use of the hotel's bar and its small library.

CCrystalismThis hotel is in a prime location on Main Street, right next to the famous Cheng Huang Miao temple. It offers both convenience and a sense of seclusion. Despite my room being near the main entrance, I experienced no noise or disturbances.
The hotel arranged a seamless transfer from East Gate, where vehicles are permitted, to the temple, followed by a short 50-meter walk to the hotel. This service, included in the hotel package, made the arrival process effortless. Communication via WeChat and assistance from my tour guide ensured a smooth transfer both in and out. They also provided luggage assistance, which was one of the reasons I chose this hotel.
The owner… or at least, I assume he is was incredibly friendly, informative, and helpful. He provided useful tour information and even gifted a bottle of vinegar upon departure.
Only one exception that language might be a barrier if you totally can’t speak Chinese - but fret not there’s always translator tools.
The room was very comfortable and appeared newly renovated, with excellent pillows and a cozy comforter. Both the room and bathroom were clean. Amenities included disposable towels, essential toiletries, and a powerful hairdryer.
We didn’t have any food here as our room didn’t come with it but that’s fine, there are plenty of options in Pingyao which you should go out to try.
As a frequent guest of Marriott chains (which means I have certain level of expectations), I had to explore local options since there isn’t one in Pingyao. This hotel met my expectations, and I highly recommend it to both local and international travellers. For the reasonable price and excellent location, I have no complaints, except that I wish I had stayed two nights instead of one!
GGuest UserWe stayed at thos lovely hotel. Lovingly restored by the current owner Mr Wang. He is the 6th generation owner of the property.
Until 10 years ago it was a derelict and dilapidated building. He poured money, time, blood, sweat and tears to restore it
And it does feel and look like a traditional house.
You feel you are going back in time.
Firstly the customer service is way beyond the call of duty. Its so good, i would recommend staying with mr Wang at whatever hotel he runs.
He picked us at the Lower East Gate, and brought us to the hotel, then took nearly half an hour to explain in great detail where we need to visit, whether the sights be in the city or outside the city.
Some of his suggestions, not on the tour books were very good . For example he suggested 3 restaurants, and we avoided them thinking he was getting a kickback.on our 4th and last day we tried restaurant no 2 of his. And it was good , the food and service were good. The prices were average with other restaurants and we got a 10% discount being the hotel's guests. And remember we had eaten 10 meals by the time we came to his suggestions.
Another suggestion of Mr Wang was Ma family home - also a very good tip from him.
Everytime we had a request or question he always responded with enthusiasm.
On our last day we checked out at 4am and he still took us to the pick up point at that ungodly hour.
Yep Mr and Mrs Wang's customer service is just first class.
The room was large, queen deluxe double, and the furnishings were traditional chinese furniture made of Rosewood. Very Expensive furniture for a hotel room. Shower worked well and was hot. However be aware its chinese style wet floor system ie there is no shower curtain between the shower and a small part of the bathroom does get wet if youare not careful. MR Wang said it will be one his improvement on his priority list. Hopefully by the time you booked the problem will have been resolved
The hotel is very close to the main streets. About 5 min walk.
The city of pingyao is worth visiting, it is one of the very walled cities left in China, with its old buildings intact and people still living it. All the city walls are also intact. Magnificent at night.
RRiyamA Step Back in Time: A Flawless Stay at a Historic Pingyao Retreat
Our stay at this exceptional traditional hotel in Pingyao was nothing short of magical. Originally an academy, the property has been beautifully restored and transformed into a serene boutique hotel that immerses you in Chinese history and culture without compromising comfort.
Location
Perfectly situated in a quiet area away from the crowds of the main tourist sites, the hotel offered a peaceful sanctuary after long days of exploring. The silence and calm added to the authenticity of the experience, as if we had truly stepped into another era.
Design & Atmosphere
The preservation of the original architecture and layout of the academy was breathtaking. Every detail of the hotel—from the wooden beams to the stone pathways—exuded historical charm. The sense of place was so strong that it felt like we were emperors transported back in time.
Room
We stayed in the Shuyuan Canopy Bed Suite, which was immaculate and exquisitely designed. The amenities were thoughtfully curated, blending modern convenience with traditional elegance. The canopy bed was a highlight, evoking a luxurious, regal atmosphere. We were particularly touched by the high-quality tea sets provided, which allowed us to enjoy our own private tea time in the comfort of the room.
Service
From the moment we arrived, the staff were exceptional—always smiling, helpful, and genuinely welcoming. Free transportation from the train station was a seamless and much-appreciated touch that set the tone for the rest of our stay.
Facilities
Every facility was carefully maintained and contributed to the overall harmony of the space. The hotel’s attention to detail extended to every corner, making for a deeply enriching and relaxing experience.
Breakfast
The only area with room for improvement was the breakfast. Served in a traditional 9-bowl box, it lacked variety and felt more like a school meal than a luxury experience. We would have loved more choices and the ability to select our dishes instead of receiving a pre-chosen set. With an upgraded breakfast service, this hotel would truly be flawless.
Final Thoughts
This stay was one of the most unique and memorable travel experiences we've ever had. A perfect blend of heritage, hospitality, and comfort. We would return in a heartbeat—and next time, hopefully with a breakfast experience to match the rest of the hotel’s excellence.
GGuest UserWhat a pleasure to stay here! The location in the Old City is beautiful and interesting, with a benefit of being easy to find. The owners have a wonderful service attitude, and tried to help me with all my little issues. My room was cozy and quiet, sloping roof meet the eaves with a courtyard view. The owners offer railway station pick up, but if you end up taking a taxi, direct the driver to the north gate.
SSimpleTravelerGreat place in Pingyao. It is reasonably priced, a bit out of the very center (meaning also out of tourists crowds that can be quite noisy in the evenings and mornings), but still close, has same old-style design as the more popular and well-established places that cater to foreigners, but priced twice as much. Pick-up and drop off service is provided - just contact the hotel in advance via phone using the reception of tour previous hotel - no one speaks English - it will solve your communication issue if you do not speak Chinese. At the place itself everyone is very eager to help - use your phone app to translate. Onwer helped me to buy tickets to Pingyao attractions and Terracota Army as I was heading to Xian next (available only through WeChat Pay that is in turn is not availablefor foreign tourists as of April 2023). If you go to Shuanglin temple, be sure to ask to buy tickets through WeChat for you as well. I was able to buy physical one by pure compassion of local guard who asked the staff to open ticket office just for me (Probably was the only foreigner in Pingyao at a time). Please also note that as of April 2023, the reconstruction works in the historical city parts are continuing, so, large chunks of the city within the walls are not looking as great as it could have been. The very center of the city is mostly untouched though and you can still come and explore. If going in spring, be prepared for the temperature swings. I got a temperature drop from 28C to 3C within 2 days by the moment I got to Pingyao. It was even snowing at night.
GGuest UserFirst of all: the owners get a 10/10. they are an old couple, super sweet and try to give you the best stay as possible. They cannot speak English which led to a laughing moment as they where translating Chinese into Spanish which we cannot speak.
A few things to consider: the rooms are small which is usually super okay for us. We don’t need much room and price as well as location was great. It still became a bit of an issue in our situation as it was pouring rain and the rooms is directly entered from the outside area. There is no space to leave wet shoes outside or much space to hang wet clothes. So this might not be an issue if you visit in summer. It really depends an is an subjective view.
The reason for a lower rating of cleanliness is, that the first room, they gave us, was spelling so bad that the first thought was „good that we only stay for one night“ and the second „how will we be able to get this out of our clothes“. We are backpackers…
After we when through the old town, we came back and the lady must have noticed our discomfort and asked if we would like to change the room. We did so as the second room was still smelling a bid old but totally acceptable for the ancient building. The room was much better even though there was still dust on some of the desks so we wipes it first before putting stuff on it.
Again, 10/10 for the kind and friendly hosts. On a sunny day, the experience might have been positive on all the topics but we have to be honest…
WWara LupeThe room was as described, the interior of the looked relatively new. I arrived early and they let me do an early check in. Even though they don't speak English, communication was not a problem because the owners are kind and helpful. I loved the ancient city, people is easy going and there is a lot of trust among people, as a solo traveler woman felt very safe and comfortable. Also this place has a good location near many attractions, I like walking so I did everything by foot. Definitely recommend staying at this place.
MMIHAELATraditional inn style hotel, just as you enter the old city. I stayed in a typical stone bed with futon mattress, initially I was stressed I cannot sleep.well but it was perfect. Another plus is the heated japanese style toilet and the breakfast across the street at two local ladies. Cannot get more authentic than this. They offer free driving to the railway station (high speed in my case), which it came as a pleasant surprise as I was not aware of. Highly recommend for simple, authentic local experience 🙂
JJeffery.truongThe ancient city Pingyao and the Yundingxuan hotel blowed our mind. The hotel provide free pickup from the train station. We took the high speed train arrived at Pingyaocheng station which is around 15 minutes away from the ancient city. When you enter the city wall gate, you will be amazed of the narrow streets and cobblestone road. Picked Yundingxuan hotel because it was closed to the North gate so
If the taxi was to dropped us off it’ll be a short walk but the driver dropped us off near the hotel because cars are not allowed within the main streets.
The hotel is closed to 200 years old and have characteristics of the Ming and Qing dynasties. I was born in Vietnam,
With roots to China but raised up in the US since I was 7 years old. I’ve seen Chinese movies but nothing will prepare you to the hotel and the ancient city. I was surprised how big the hotel complex was. All the staff were very nice, the main host spoke English, and the breakfasts were traditional Chinese breakfast. We stayed two nights and we felt safe throughout our visit. My wife and daughter appreciated the three hotel cats and all the felines throughout the city.
I’m sure the other hotels are fantastic and will give your a unique experience but I can vouch for Yundingxuan. Just be prepared to get out your comfort zone but be amazed by the visual and taste of Pingyao Ancient City.
GGuest UserA very unique courtyard B&B inn. The rooms are clean, tidy and antique. The inn is located on the West Street of the Old City. It is right on the pedestrian street. It is very close to the Rishengchang Bank and the county government. The boss is very enthusiastic and the service is very good. I will give you a tip in advance. We sent location navigation and helped us pick up and drop off our luggage from the parking lot 🅿️. They introduced the ancient city travel suggestions in detail and arranged an ancient city guide for us to have an in-depth understanding of Pingyao’s historical and cultural heritage. It was great [strong][strong ] [Strong] When checking out, the boss also gave me a souvenir from the ancient city - aged vinegar, which is very nice and worth recommending [Strong] [Strong] [Strong]
