Ena Serenity Boutique Hotel Ephesus

The hotel is quite basic. There was no hot water in the mornings. The breakfast was good.

Possibly the worst – and least serene – night I've ever spent in a hotel in my life. And bad plumbing. We had booked a perfectly normal double bedroom with a patio which looked charming and indeed was, when I was finally allowed to see it; but not stay in it… As we were made to sleep in a completely different and terrible bedroom in a basement so filled with beds like a dormitory we couldn't move and with a persistent smell of bad plumbing which seems to pervade the whole hotel. The windows opened onto walls which were about 6 inches away and there was a set of bins outside the door to make it look scenic. The smell was so bad that I had to get up in the middle of the night and go up to the terrace to get air, or I would have vomited. There was not even any hot water in the evening so after a long journey from Greece we were met by a sleepless night. That owners made no attempt to explain why we were not getting the bedroom we had booked - and indeed were not there to explain, as shortly after letting us in at around 7:30 in the evening, so still quite early, they had disappeared. Only next day, after a visit to Ephesus naturally spoilt by our terrible night, could we find the owner who made no apology whatsoever, made no effort to try to refund or do what a normal hotel would do in those circumstances, and tried to imply that in some way it was our fault that we got a bad room. It also emerged that they could quite easily have given us one like the room we had actually booked, but chose to put us in the basement prison with no explanation. As two travellers in our 60s who are both experienced and used to some of the roughest parts of the world, but also like to actually get what we have paid for, this could not have been a worse hotel stay - except for the breakfast which was excellent and the only reason this does not get no stars out of 10 rather than just one. Be warned they do that terrible thing of pretending the room is really worth over $150 but they are discounting it to 50 or something, when it's a $50 room to start with at best anyway. Or in our case a worthless one. After many years reviewing hotels, I have always tried to give them good ones but in this case it would be impossible, given the bad faith of the hotel owners and the terrible plumbing which I think would be a health risk for anyone staying or eating there, and my simple advice would be – STAY AWAY. There are plenty of other better hotels nearby.

Advertising and pricing for hotel indicated it included breakfast. After arrival, owner said that no breakfast was included eventhough we showed him agreement when we paid. In addition, bathroom was dirty
