Carina - Design&Lifestyle Hotel

Starting with positives - lovely staff and very clean and fantastic view of Matterhorn (not all rooms though). Negatives - no safe, no tv, no kettle/coffee machine in room. Coffee is only available from the downstairs coffee machine during breakfast hours otherwise you pay. You can have tea without milk for free. Not even one drawer in the room! Just an open type of shelving unit that I got my head on several times. The bathroom is literally a tiny pod in the corner of the room. No room to turn round in shower. You have to close the toilet door stand behind it just to get yourself in the shower. Walls are thin and if next door guests or those above are noisy you are going to hear them. The silence is also literally deafening. Not even a radio. The smell of food in the rooms is nauseating. It seems to travel through the ventilation in the bathroom. Breakfast is basic. Really basic. Would not recommend for a family for sure. And couples beware - take note of points above.

Hotel Carina was the perfect place to stay in Zermatt! The restaurant was absolutely wonderful, serving delicious breakfast and dinner that made each meal a delight. Their craft cocktails were the best in town, expertly made and full of flavor. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Zermatt and will definitely be staying again!

Location: The hotel is in a GREAT location. It is not on the main street of Zermatt but a 10 minute walk. It was located in a quieter area and convenient to the ski lift and the Denner grocery store. Zermatt is incredibly hilly with steep inclines to reach certain hotels. There is a short hill to reach Hotel Carina which makes is pretty walkable, however, I do not recommend staying here with elderly or children. You can walk here from the train station (10 minute walk) but we took a taxi for $15 so we weren't drag our luggage through the streets (although we saw many people doing this). Staff: The staff is young and kind. They are attentive and helpful. Laura gave us an overview of the slope map and restaurant recommendations. The cleaning staff kindly serviced our room upon request and the reception ordered us a taxi for transport. Accommodations: We stayed in the Mountain Penthouse and had an exquisite view of the town and the Matterhorn. Our place had a modern kitchen and family room area, and upstairs had a king bed. The room was clean and modern. The bed was incredibly hard, like a futon, but adding extra pillows to the bed helped us sleep. We also found the couch to be comfortable to sleep on. The place can technically sleep four people because the pull out sofa but the place would be too crowded. There was no place to store open suitcases and no place to store clothing (like dressers or drawers). We kept our suitcases on the floor of the kitchen. The bathrooms also had tiny round mirrors that were hung pretty high and there was no place for brushes or toiletries for getting ready. There are two full length mirrors which were GREAT but no outlets near them for drying hair. Basically there was very little space for the things we brought and so we felt unorganized during the stay. Breakfast and Dinner: The restaurant is convenient and lovely. We enjoyed dinner and breakfast. We loved the coffee machine and toast, and we had boiled eggs and yogurt. Spa area: This area is open from 4:00pm-9:00pm. There is a sauna that needs a repair on the door to hold in the heat and a steam room that worked great. There is a lounging area with towels and lemon water. There is also a shower but the shower does not have a lock on it so it's a bit awkward to actually shower there. Why the hotel earned few stars: This hotel does not offer 24 hour reception and we experienced an emergency at 5am. The reception area was dark and locked with no posted hours of operation and no instructions on what to do in an emergency. So there are periods of time when there are zero staff members present at the hotel. Outside of the hotel was a sign that said call this number for 24 hour assistance but we called it and it was out of service. We called the police but no one there spoke English at the early hours of the morning. If you are traveling from out of the country, it is important to note when you book a hotel that does not offer 24 hour reception because it could put

Me and my boyfriend, both having a lot of experience in the industry of food and drinks, had an amazing dinner at the restaurant of Carina a couple of days ago. Among the things that amazed us was the food taste , presentation and inspiration on the ways of Janis on how to handle a non the less simple ingredient pallete but make it in such an artfull and perfect way that every single bite got us excited. The service was always there but in such an elegant and friendly way that we both had the feeling of dinning in our house but getting spoiled by professionals. Wine suggestion is not to forget , great wine list and Laura being knowledgeable and understanding. Going back soon!!!

Lucas, Manuel and every staff here is fantastically friendly and extremely helpful, they make us feels very comfortable and welcome during our stay. Will definitely be coming back to them!! Thank you for everything.

Nice cosy hotel with a convenient location close to the train station. Our room had direct view to the Matterhorn which we were able to see even for a few minutes when the clouds cleared out! The hotel also has a nice bar where we had some cocktails — the Italian bartender was very helpful and friendly. However, we did had a few issues, with the most important one being the lack of privacy in the bathroom (glass door, big openings between the door and the glass walls, no sound or visual isolation). The lack of tv in the room was also a disadvantage, as in a contemporary hotel room the tv is not used to watch the news, but for listening to music, watching a Netflix movie or even doing some morning yoga with a YouTube video. There were also a few issues at breakfast. Even though we had chosen a breakfast time from the previous day, when we came downstairs the buffet was nearly empty — out of three types of bread we only had one, we took the last two eggs, the lady next to us was praising a banana bread which we didn’t even see in the buffet, etc. Of course we completely understand the hotel’s effort to minimize waste in the context of sustainability, however when a guest is promised a breakfast buffet, this should be fully available throughout the service time. Other than that, the overall impression was positive and with a few small adjustments and improvements, it could easily become excellent!
