Enjoy the wonders of the grassland: The Saikantala City Grassland is the only urban grassland in China. It spreads greenery in the embrace of the city. You can ride horses through it, and the modern urban style and grassland style complement each other. The horse farm deep in the Xilamuren Grassland shows the beauty of the original ecology. You can ride horses and appreciate the pure scenery outside the Great Wall. Stepping on the vast snowfield: In winter in Baotou, the Xilamuren grassland becomes a vast snowfield, and the surrounding mountains and Aobao are wrapped in silver. The sound of horses' hooves stepping on the snow is unique.

Wudang Monastery

Wudang Monastery

I specifically arranged a trip to Wudang Monastery on my way from Bayannur to Hohhot. After getting off the national highway, it was another several dozen kilometers, and the winding path truly led to a secluded spot. Near the top of the mountain, just before reaching the scenic area, we saw many water storage tanks, which we guessed were for greening and environmental protection of this sacred land. Not sure if our guess is correct. Admission is free for those over 60, and the scenic area has convenient shuttle buses.

Kundulun Monastery

Kundulun Monastery

In Baotou's Kundulun District, hidden among the industrial area and greenery on the west side of the Kun River, lies a Tibetan Buddhist monastery full of historical significance called Kundulun Monastery. It was first built in the 26th year of the Kangxi reign, over 300 years ago, and is a nationally protected cultural heritage site. Entering through an imposing gate, the courtyard is spacious and clean, with well-arranged halls, a Kalan Square, and a traditional Chinese medicine hall. Kundulun Monastery now has 10 halls, one of which is the newly restored Sutra Pavilion, while the other 9 have been preserved since the Qing Dynasty. Among them, the murals in the Mahavira Hall have been preserved since the Qing Dynasty, with pigments made from pure natural coral and agate, making them very precious. The architecture of the Small Yellow Temple is very distinctive, combining a Han-style entrance with a Tibetan-style scripture hall. It is said that the caisson ceiling, walls, and Buddha statues inside are also very valuable. Nowadays, Kundulun Monastery has few visitors, making it quite tranquil. The nearby Kundulun Monastery Wetland Park can also be visited together.

Baotou's 'Little Potala Palace' | Wudang Zhao

Baotou's 'Little Potala Palace' | Wudang Zhao

💫 Are you still worried about altitude sickness when visiting the Potala Palace? Here's a recommendation: Wudang Zhao, one of the three major Tibetan monasteries along with Ta'er Monastery in Qinghai and the Potala Palace in Tibet! 🏯 Wudang Zhao, in Mongolian 'Wudang' means 'willow tree'; originally named Badagar Zhao, meaning 'white lotus'. It was founded during the Qing Emperor Kangxi's reign (1662-1722), and was rebuilt in the fourteenth year of Emperor Qianlong's reign (1749), when it was given the Han name Guangjue Temple. The first living Buddha, Luobusangjia Lazo, built it based on Tibet's Tashilhunpo Monastery, and through expansions during the Kangxi, Qianlong, Jiaqing, Daoguang, and Guangxu periods, it gradually expanded to its current size. It is located on a hillside in a valley called Wudang Gou, on a slope of a mountain called Aobao Mountain, hence it is commonly known as Wudang Zhao. Wudang Zhao faces south according to the terrain. It has more than 2,500 rooms including various halls, scripture halls, and monks' quarters, covering over 300 acres, distributed along a 1.5-kilometer-long hillside. It is a white building constructed in layers along the mountain, surrounded by mountains, and sheltered by green pines and cypresses, majestic and spectacular. 💙 Wudang Zhao is located in Shiguai District, Baotou City, Inner Mongolia, and is about an hour's drive from the city center. You can choose to rent a car or take a bus (Route 7) to reach the scenic area. 💜 The scenic area is open from 9 am to 5 pm. 🧡 Ticket price for the scenic area is 60 yuan Discount policy for the scenic area: 1⃣️ Free admission: Children under 1.2 meters (excluding), seniors aged 65 and above (including), holders of tour guide certificates issued by the National Tourism Administration, active military personnel, retired military personnel, military academy students, retired staff, disabled veterans, and people with disabilities can enter the park for free. 2⃣️ Half-price tickets: Children between 1.2 meters (excluding) and 1.4 meters, seniors aged between 60 and 64, students over 1.4 meters tall and in school can enjoy half-price tickets (valid identity documents such as ID card, senior citizen card, disability card, student card, etc. must be presented at the tourist center ticket window for identity verification) ❤️ Wudang Zhao's Buddha Sunning Festival. The event is one of the Wudang Zhao Mani prayer activities. On the first day of the eighth lunar month every year, Wudang Zhao holds a 'Buddha Sunning' event. The giant thangka of the Buddha that is sunned during this event is 20 meters high and 16.8 meters wide, the largest in Inner Mongolia. It is laid out on the hillside for sunning, and the scene is very grand. Don't miss out if you're interested! For more interesting and fun travel information, please follow me.

Encountering Wudangzhao (Part 1)

Encountering Wudangzhao (Part 1)

It was built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1722) and is a national cultural relic protection unit, a Buddhist holy site for Mongolian Buddhists, and is known as the 'First Temple of the Northern Grasslands' and the 'Little Potala Palace on the Grasslands'. The Suguqin Dugu Palace is located at the forefront of the entire temple and is the place for holding collective gatherings and chanting scriptures. The pillars in the hall are all wrapped with dragon-patterned woolen carpets, the floor is fully carpeted, the walls are painted with colorful murals, and the back hall and the second and third floors enshrine Shakyamuni, Tsongkhapa, and successive generations of Buddhist masters. To the west of the Suguqin Dugu Palace, standing side by side with it, is the Queyila Hall, where Buddhist doctrines are taught. The ten-meter-high bronze statue of Shakyamuni in the hall is the largest bronze Buddha statue in the entire temple.

Xila Muren Grasslands 🇨🇳 Inner Mongolia

Xila Muren Grasslands 🇨🇳 Inner Mongolia

A tour group stop off. A trip to the grasslands in Inner Mongolia in my mind was going to be a chance to see horses roaming, yurts on the lands and try some tasty new foods. And in its own way it was that. Did we stay in yurts? Yes. Did we see horses in the Grasslands? Yes. Did we have a banquet of traditional foods? Yes A trip that ticks boxes of what you'd hoped is a start, but this is a tourist centre and unfortunately the authenticity was missing, the rows of yurts across the area, horse riding tours and a dinner with live entertainment, all slightly different to the brochure. But with a group of friends it was great! A chance to dress up, make a fool of yourselves in the entertainment shows and try local dishes. Walking through the grasslands was cool and we saw camels cows and horses roaming. The yurts are ok for a night and it's something to tell your friends and family about. Getting There- For the grasslands it's likely that you'll need a tour provider, coach or rental car. Food- The food consisted mainly of lamb dishes; including ribs, skewers, stews and kebabs. The flat breads were remiscent of middle eastern food and the flavour was generally a lightly salted and mild spices. In the grasslands they also has a number of dairy snacks that tasted something like mashup of toffee and cheddar cheese. Sweet, salty and something I'm still not sure if I like or not, but worth trying.

Wudang Lamasery.

Wudang Lamasery.

Wudang Lamasery: Located in the depths of Daqing Mountain in Wudang Gully, Jihuluntu Sumu, Shiguai District, Baotou City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, it is a Gelugpa temple of Tibetan Buddhism. It is one of the four famous temples of Tibetan Buddhism in China, along with the Potala Palace in Tibet, Ta'er Monastery in Qinghai, and Labrang Monastery in Gansu. Wudang Lamasery not only attracts many believers and tourists with its profound religious and cultural significance, but is also famous for its beautiful natural scenery and architectural features. Wudang Lamasery was built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1722 AD). It was built by the first living Buddha, Lobsang Jiacuo, based on the Tashilhunpo Monastery in Tibet. After several expansions and renovations, it gradually formed its current scale. Wudang Lamasery is not only an important temple of Tibetan Buddhism, but also the most complete pure Tibetan architectural complex in Inner Mongolia, with high artistic value. Wudang Lamasery is built according to the mountain, with layers of white buildings and the surrounding green pines and cypresses complementing each other, making it majestic and spectacular. There are more than 2,500 large and small temples, sutra halls, and monks' houses in the temple. The main buildings include the Great Hall of the Buddha, Sugqin Hall, and Dongkuer Hall. Among them, Sugqin Hall is the place where the whole temple gathers to chant sutras, and Dongkuer Hall is the main hall, showing its noble status. A must-visit place in Baotou.

Gujiu, now known as Baotou!

Gujiu, now known as Baotou!

This small border town is actually the second largest city in Inner Mongolia. The cost of living here is very low, the residents are friendly, and the elderly will even tell me where to go for fun. I went to the Yellow River Ballad to see the Yellow River, to the Saihan Tala Grassland to see the grasslands and steeds, and to the Baotou Museum to learn about the history of Baotou. Baotou, formerly known as Jiuyuan, is also the hometown of Lü Bu, a famous historical figure. Baotou is a city with a rich cultural heritage. There are many temples here that are worth visiting, but I was worried about the inconvenience of transportation and the time-consuming travel, so I didn't go. Friends who drive themselves might consider visiting Meidai Temple, Wudang Temple, as well as Hasuhai and Cilechuan, all of which are great places!
