On my first visit to Newcastle, UK, a friend who lives there drove me to Alnwick Castle. It only took about fifty minutes by car from Newcastle. Although I'm not a die-hard Harry Potter fan, I do enjoy the movies, especially the scenes where they learn magic at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Some scenes at Alnwick Castle were used for the outdoor broomstick training. Alnwick Castle was built in the 11th century and is the second largest castle in the UK. When I arrived in the morning, I saw a group of people, both adults and children, participating in a 3D broomstick game, reenacting scenes from the movie, which was quite interesting. The Percy family, who own Alnwick Castle, still reside there, so you have the opportunity to tour the interior and learn about their family history, including their roles in wars and their relationship with the royal family. It's a lesson in British noble history. However, photography is not allowed inside, so you have to experience it firsthand. The outdoor area is vast, and you can enjoy rolling on the grass with your family. In spring and summer, there are beautiful flowers for photo opportunities. The castle's restaurant is also quite good. We bought sandwiches and coffee and ate outside. Fortunately, it was sunny and not too windy, so we could enjoy the sunlight. Additionally, the castle shop sells Harry Potter memorabilia, so you might want to set aside some time to check it out. The castle tickets are valid for a year, allowing multiple entries, but remember that it is closed in winter.

Sharing Series After My Third Cruise Trip - Part 10: Shore Excursion Experience The weather was unpredictable; throughout the cruise, temperatures ranged from 9°C to 12°C, with occasional showers. Before disembarking for shore excursions, we needed to prepare the following: one folding umbrella, two disposable raincoats, one thermos filled with water, a small pack of tissues, two light jackets, two heavy jackets (for sightseeing outside cities, windproof or waterproof outer layers are preferable), and a small amount of food. Also, bring your passport, cruise room key, credit card, and a small amount of cash. Purchased shore excursions are recorded in the Costa Cruises App. Arrive at the designated meeting point early and show your participation information to the staff to verify the meeting point is correct. If you haven't received instructions by departure time, contact the staff immediately! When boarding the shuttle bus, try to sit near the front: this makes it easier to hear the tour guide and ask questions! Before the tour bus departs, nod to the passengers in front of, behind, to your left, or to your right, and try to remember their faces and clothing colors: this will make it easier to find your fellow passengers and reunite if you get lost or forget the meeting time during free time! After getting off the bus, be sure to follow the tour guide to the attractions. Do not linger to take photos or shop on your own to avoid getting lost and delaying the entire itinerary! The following sharing suggests that "tour guide" should be referred to as "tour leader" instead of "tour guide". We booked three shore excursions: The first excursion: The port of call was Newcastle, and the shore excursion was Alnwick Castle. At the port, we took a shuttle bus to the parking lot outside Alnwick Castle. After disembarking, the tour leader led us to the castle entrance, distributed admission tickets and a castle map, announced the meeting time, and told us to meet at the parking lot ourselves. Then we were free to explore on our own. Visiting the castle in the light rain felt especially serene! Thanks to the thorough research I did online beforehand, I didn't waste any time! The second excursion: The port of call was South Queensferry, and the shore excursion was Johnnie Walker Experience, in the Temple of Whiskey. The cruise ship didn't dock at a port; it anchored in deep water offshore, as it wasn't a major port but a ferry terminal. We first took a ferry from the cruise ship to the pier, then a shuttle bus to the "Flagship Store for Imported Spirits." Upon arrival at the store, the tour leader announced the meeting time and place, led us inside, and then handed us over to the store's guide for today's guided tour. The tour consisted of several parts, including an introduction to the history of imported spirits, first performed by live actors on a small stage, then showcased with lights and sound; followed by interactive spirit tastings. Each part of this guided tour was interesting, making me realize that some things and events need to "adapt to the times." After leaving the "Flagship Store," we were free to explore, carrying a map of the store's location (downloaded from the store's website), which made it easy to navigate to other attractions and return to the meeting point. On the return trip, we got off at the ferry terminal. Instead of rushing to the dock, we walked over to the buildings next to the terminal to look around. Then we joined the crowd and queued for the connecting ferry back to the cruise ship. While waiting, I looked around and saw waves slowly approaching where we were standing; it must be high tide. The connecting ferry hadn't arrived yet. Listening to the constant sound of waves crashing on the shore, I was filled with anxiety, fearing the waves would wash over us. I felt a pang of guilt: why didn't I queue earlier and wait for the connecting ferry back to the cruise ship! A close call! We sat down in our seats on the ferry. The wind was strong while the ferry was sailing, and the glass doors at the cabin entrances were closed. A moment later, a commotion arose from the passengers in the open-air seats at the bow. It turned out the strong wind and the waves were washing over us, and some passengers, their clothes soaked, walked into the cabin. Fortunately, the weather when we returned to the cruise ship was just windy but not rainy. We quickly went to the buffet restaurant to eat some hot food to warm ourselves up. After resting for a while, my wife and I chatted about the interesting things that happened today, and I remembered the rising tide at the ferry terminal and the noise of the passengers. I wonder if I'm a little too sensitive about "safety"? After all, it's always better to be cautious when traveling abroad! The third activity: docking at Stavanger (shore excursion) was PREIKESTOLEN: ADVENTURE ON THE LYSEFJORD Knowing we would be hiking to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) for a panoramic view of Lysefjord, we divided our belongings into two groups, one for my wife and one for each of us, each carrying a retractable hiking pole. At the port, we took a shuttle bus to the parking lot at the Preikestolen hiking start point. The leader had announced the meeting time and place before we got off, so we were free to explore on our own. Without really looking around, we headed towards the start of the hike, eager to see Preikestolen. We started on a gravel path, gradually transitioning to a rocky path with visible signs of being carved (it's hardly a path), and then onto solid rocks of varying sizes, shapes, and irregular forms. We had to rely solely on experience to climb. When we encountered larger rocks that my wife couldn't step on, she said, "Let's turn back." I replied, "We're almost there!" and helped her along, continuing our arduous ascent. Just then! We met a middle-aged couple coming from the opposite direction. We asked them, "Is Pulpit Rock beautiful? How far is it from here?" They looked at us and replied, "You'll be amazed when you reach Pulpit Rock. You've only covered a quarter of the way; it's up to you!" We sincerely thanked them. We stood there, watching them descend the mountain. My wife said, "There are still three-quarters of the way left. How are we going to finish?" "Let's turn back and go down!" My legs were too tired to continue, and the return trip was even more arduous. Going up was easy, but going down was difficult, and the strain wasn't worth it, so I had to turn back! Back at the hiking start, I found a resting place and enjoyed the lunch package provided by the shore excursion. It contained a bottle of water, a sandwich (delicious, probably because I was a little hungry), a banana, and some biscuits. The package had been distributed this morning at the cruise ship's meeting point. Near the parking lot, there was a small hut with a model of the mountain range, marking different hiking trails, including distances, estimated time, and difficulty levels, etc., for reference. There were also map booklets available. The weather was a bit cool, so we didn't wait for the meeting time and boarded the tour bus to rest. Later, on the return trip, we arrived at the port parking lot. When we got off, we saw Stavanger's local tour buses with bright red bodies and colorful patterns. Robson & Sons, kippers £1.20 each, hot-smoked trout £6 a pack—and took the 1.3-mi dune path north to Dunstanburgh Castle. The castle is English Heritage, £9.50 adult in 2026, but you can walk the dune path and view the silhouette from outside the gate for free; the interior is mostly a roofless shell, so the gate fee buys you the curtain wall walk and the audio guide. I paid once, skipped it the second time—the silhouette from the Links is the shot anyway. The path is flat, rabbit-tracked, with fulmars on the cliffs and a cricket ground at Craster end. Mistake: I wore trainers after rain and the dune grass soaked my ankles; gaiters or trail shoes in autumn. Another mistake: eating lunch at 1 pm in Craster—the smokehouse queue was 20 deep; buy kippers at 9 am, walk, eat back in the car. Worth it? Yes—Northumberland’s coast is the least crowded in England, and Craster’s kipper smell is a memory in itself. The castle is optional; the harbour-to-ruin walk is mandatory. Question: is £9.50 for a roofless castle worth it when the dune path and the kipper smokehouse already give you the place, or should EH open the gate and charge for the audio guide only?

Tickets were e-tickets, and although I didn’t have Wi-Fi, I simply used my name to retrieve the booking. It was hassle-free, and my reservation was readily accessible on the castle’s site. The tickets were printed without any issues. You can choose between self-guided tours or joining guided tours to explore the castle. There's plenty of opportunity to take your time enjoying the visit. Broomstick flying lessons are a highlight for both kids and the young at heart! Note that since this is still a family residence, photography is not allowed inside the state room area of the castle.

Breaking our journey home from Alnwick to Hayling Island, we found the location modern, clean, and welcoming. Stand-out highlights include the delightful staff who served our sandwiches on Saturday night, the friendly receptionist originally from New Jersey via Tennessee, and our breakfast host, a helpful individual with short blonde hair and glasses. On the downside, the shower over the bath felt inherently unsafe, and I had assumed all Holiday Inns and HIE accommodations had walk-in showers. We stayed in Room 250, the furthest room from reception. While it was conveniently close to the fire exit, it left us wondering why it was situated there. Additionally, two Anglepoise lamps—one table and one standard—were present but neither would light up. Overall, a mix of positives and negatives.
