The picturesque and popular Aegiali is located northeast of Amorgos. This is the second largest port of the island, after the port of Katapola. Aegiali is found within a distance of 15 km north east of Chora and it is known as the nightlife spot of Amorgos. The village is concentrated around the bay and it is the starting point for numerous hiking trails. It has a permanent population of 430 inhabitants who are mainly involved with fishing and tourism. During the last years, Aegiali has become popular among tourists for the tourism facilities and the long beach. According to archeological excavations, Aegiali had already been inhabited since the ancient times. The port of Aegiali is occupied with numerous fish boats, and some of the best taverns and cafeterias are found there. Aegiali is surrounded by picturesque small villages, such as Tholaria, Lagada and Potamos built amphitheatrically on the slopes of Mount Kirkellos at an altitude of 823 meters, overlooking the bay. #firsttimermistakes I spent a month island hopping in Greece in June. I have visited Greece many times before and been to a couple of islands each time. This time it was planned in October 2025, however it's very difficult to find ferry days and times at this time of year. It was a brilliant month flying into Milos, moving to Kimolos the next day, 3 nights there and on to Serifos. From there to Antiparos before moving to Iraklia and Amorgos and flying back from Paros. The mistake was not investigating ferry days/boats from every island. This resulted in travelling from Serifos to Paros (in order to get to Antiparos) on a day when there were no direct ferries. I had to use Seajets costing over £100 per person whereas the day before I could have got a Blue Star for £7 (it may be slightly slower but they are very stable boats so less chance of seasickness). Also be aware that if you pick a smaller boat, the winds may prevent you from travelling. I have since discovered that you can find historical timetables online so that you see the days they are likely to travel to various islands. If you’re looking for a quieter, more authentic Greek island, Amorgos is something special. What makes it unforgettable is the dramatic landscape, rugged cliffs, deep blue sea and peaceful villages that feel untouched by mass tourism. One of the highlights was visiting the iconic Monastery of the Hozoviotissa, built right into the cliffside. The view alone is worth the climb as it was facing the legendary Aegean Sea. The beaches here are also stunning but less crowded compared to the other islands. The water was very clear and the wind was very strong. The temperature at that time was about 18 degrees, so it was quite cooling. Renting a car or scooter would make it so much easier to explore hidden spots around the island. The monastery of Hozoviotissa, built into a cliff, left me speechless. The island’s wild hiking trails and dramatic cliffs felt like a dream for adventurers. Amorgos has few tourists, plenty of goats, and some of the bluest water I’ve seen. It’s raw, real, and deeply memorable — a secret worth the journey.
