Is Georgia suitable for a self-drive trip? Yes — if you're already a confident driver. But you’ll need a lot of focus! First, they drive on the left-hand side of the car (left-hand drive), so if you’re not used to it, it can feel confusing at first. Sometimes both the driver and passenger get disoriented or even mix up which side to get in the car 😂. Most locals are extremely skilled at overtaking on curves — both in the city and in the mountains. Some roads aren’t great, with lots of rocks and constant construction. In some areas, you even have to avoid cows because locals raise a lot of cattle. Our itinerary is very chill because… well, our bodies can’t handle intense trips anymore 😂. We only visited a few places each day because the distances between cities are long and travel time eats up a big part of the day. Travel dates: 17–28 September 2025 🚗 Let’s hit the road… ✿ Day 1: Tbilisi We landed in Tbilisi, the capital, and spent one day exploring before heading to other cities. But the wind was extremely strong that day — strong enough that the cable car was shut down — so our plans changed completely. The road and conditions were good and not scary, though you’ll need to watch out for occasional rocks and potholes. Lots of curves, but definitely not as bad as Mae Hong Son! On the way, we stopped in Mtskheta, which is full of religious sites — so many churches, and they’re beautiful with great viewpoints. • Chronicle of Georgia • Jvari Monastery • Ananuri Fortress ✿ Day 3: Juta Valley (Fifth Season) Fifth Season and Juta Village are dreams for mountain lovers who (like us) don’t really want to hike much 😂. Reviews said the walk to Fifth Season is only about 1 km — so we booked immediately! But honestly… it’s quite steep. It’s the most exhausting 1 km ever. But even someone like me who never exercises could do it — so you can too!! We stayed at Fifth Season. There’s a lake you can hike to (another 3 km), but nope… we rested instead 😌. ✿ Day 4: Kazbegi – Borjomi A long travel day — around 4+ hours from Kazbegi to Borjomi. The Ananuri Fortress is located in Georgia on the Georgian Military Highway, 70 km from Tbilisi, where the small Vedzatkhevi River flows into the Aragvi River. Incidentally, the fortress stands next to the functioning Assumption Cathedral. Also on the fortress grounds are the Church of the Virgin Mary, the Church of the Savior, and the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God "Healer." Near the fortress is the Janvali Reservoir, where you can go canoeing or catamaran riding, and the Greater Caucasus Mountains. In 2012, Ananuri was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List and has retained its original appearance. The medieval castle is surrounded by a powerful stone wall with loopholes and towers that served to protect the Aragvi River valley. Built in the 16th century, the castle was a defensive stronghold of Northern Transcaucasia. Admission is free, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
