Before planning my year-end trip, my impression of Jordan was quite vague. I thought it would be a wealthy Middle Eastern country, but as I started researching, I gradually learned more. During the six-day self-driving trip, I deeply felt its hardships and resilience. First, Jordan's economic development level is relatively low. I was even a bit shocked in the capital, Amman, but the locals are friendly, the country is relatively stable, and the education level is good. In fact, its tourism resources are excellent, with UNESCO World Heritage site Petra, the lowest point on earth—the Dead Sea, and Wadi Rum, which looks most like Mars... Unfortunately, tourism has been severely impacted in recent years due to neighboring conflicts. I hope for more peace in the world so that ordinary hardworking people can have more opportunities 🙏 1️⃣ Amman feels more like a transit stopover destination, with a cityscape of highs and lows similar to Chongqing. We spent half a day driving around, mainly visiting the Citadel, a typical route. From above, the Byzantine-era Roman Theater and ordinary residential areas are separated by just a wall, which is quite spectacular. 🏨 DoubleTree by Hilton, a good transitional night stay with great value 2️⃣ It takes about 1 hour from Amman to the Dead Sea, where we stayed for two days. 🏨 Kempinski is probably the best hotel at the Dead Sea, offering a great resort vibe. 3️⃣ The drive from the Dead Sea to Petra takes about 3 hours. We stayed in Petra for two and a half days (arriving in the afternoon and leaving the next day at noon), entering Petra twice. Since we arrived in the afternoon on the first day, we took the shuttle directly to and from the Treasury, then hiked to and from the Monastery. The next day, we returned to the Treasury and the Royal Tombs and walked out via the Snake Path. 🏨 Marriott Petra has decent facilities; service and breakfast are below Marriott’s average but still acceptable. 4️⃣ From Petra to Wadi Rum is about 1.5 hours. We arrived in Wadi Rum in the afternoon and left at noon. 🏨 Luxotel Bubble is considered the best bubble hotel in Wadi Rum, with facilities providing maximum comfort. Half board included, and surprisingly, the food was decent. In winter, running two air conditioners at night is too dry, so I turned one off and it was still acceptable. But if I had to choose again, I would prefer to do a Jeep tour and then drive 1 hour to stay in Aqaba. 5️⃣ After a 1-hour drive, we reached Aqaba, the first time visiting the Red Sea area, experiencing the Red Sea resort atmosphere. After lunch, we drove 4 hours back to Amman, and flew out the next day. 🏨 Back at the DoubleTree, a familiar brand always brings a sense of security. (Word limit ⚠️ Please see the first comment for important notes) Overall, Jordan is amazing. Whether it’s the civilization carved into the rocks or the untamed natural wilderness that has never been conquered, it is a precious memory from my 2025-2026 New Year trip. The absolute highlight was settling down at a traditional Bedouin camp as night fell, sipping hot sage tea around a roaring campfire while the sky turned into an ocean of brilliant, unpolluted stars that you just can't see anywhere else. Sleeping in a transparent dome tent meant waking up right alongside the desert, and every single moment felt so cinematic and surreal that I realized this isn't just another travel destination, it's a core memory waiting to happen. You need to add this place to your bucket list because nothing compares to feeling that small, connected, and completely in awe of nature's sheer beauty. My host Suleiman’s brother drove: 25 km of red sand tracks, stopping at Khazali Canyon, then Burrah’s narrow cliff maze, arriving at the Seven Pillars viewpoint at 5:30 PM. The Seven Pillars are not seven clean columns — they are a fractured sandstone massif that catches the last light like a struck match. We built a small sage fire (Bedouin rule: only in the metal brazier the camp provides, never on open sand — fines apply), boiled water for tea on the embers, and watched the pillars go from gold to maroon to ash-blue. Camels grunted somewhere behind the dune. The tea-fire combo is the point: the fire is not for warmth, it is for the steam curl in front of the cooling rock. Mistake tourists make: booking the 130–150 JOD ultralight flight at sunset instead — loud, door-off, you miss the tea. Another: wearing black in October — the sand radiates heat till 7 PM. Traditional camp tent 25–45 JOD/person incl. dinner; bubble dome 150–300 JOD, book a month ahead. Would you skip the Seven Pillars for a longer sit at Burrah’s narrows, or chase both and risk the 6:20 PM light passing you in transit?

Had an amazing experience! Ameen was incredibly accommodating and flexible with my schedule, which I truly appreciated. We kicked things off in Aqaba, where I enjoyed snorkeling in the beautiful Red Sea. Next, we ventured to Wadi Rum for a fantastic Bedouin desert experience. On the third day, we explored Petra, rode camels, and then headed to the Dead Sea for a soothing spa session—much needed after the desert heat! We’ve taken the “Lost Land” tour twice, guided by Abdullah Salah. The first trip was delightful, and we loved it so much that we specifically requested him for a repeat excursion via our tour operator. Abdullah, fluent in Russian and a fascinating storyteller, honed his skills at Cairo University. On our second visit, in July 2026, we spent a week in Egypt to share the beauty of Sharm with our grown children. This was a family reunion as our daughter hadn’t visited Egypt since childhood, and her husband was experiencing it for the first time. Their fresh impressions made the journey even more special. We knew we had to maximize the experience within a short time frame, and the “Lost Land” tour was the perfect choice. This time, we had Ahmed as our guide, who also spoke excellent Russian with barely any accent—kind, attentive, and upbeat! The tour was very comfortable right from the start—an early hotel pickup by a cozy, air-conditioned bus. There was a brief 15-minute technical stop at a fuel station where we enjoyed snacks from the hotel and grabbed drinks like coffee, water, or soda. The offerings were similar to those at any convenience store, including chips and nuts for the kids. The program was brilliantly crafted. We began with morning quad biking and camel rides. Our group of 40 was split into two, alternating between activities. One stop featured a uniquely-shaped boulder reminiscent of the pedestal of St. Petersburg’s “Bronze Horseman.” Afterward, we savored aromatic Bedouin tea, hot flatbreads with spiced honey, and soft cheese with seasonings—a hearty treat with plenty to go around. For those preferring cold drinks, chilled water with ice blocks was available. This thoughtful care was invaluable under the scorching heat. Next, we switched to jeeps for a thrilling ride over warm pink dunes, an exhilarating yet safe adventure guided by skilled local Bedouin drivers. Ahmed shared captivating insights about the stunning Red Canyon and its formation, alongside fascinating narratives about everything in sight. The surreal granite mountain landscapes and a walk through the narrow colored canyon were mesmerizing. The paths had handrails, and people helped one another when needed. Comfortable sneakers are vital for such terrain, as flip-flops are unsuitable. Guides should always highlight the importance of proper footwear—a detail some missed—but we had no issues. The organizers also ensured there was enough time for everyone to take photos, pose, and enjoy the views leisurely. A professional photographer offered his services, and the USB with over 100 fantastic shots was delivered to our hotel the next evening. The collection included both group and individual photos in various stunning locations. After exploring the desert, we drove for about an hour to a dock where two yachts awaited. During the ride, some rested while others enjoyed Ahmed’s continued storytelling and gazed at the scenery, noting countless abandoned hotel projects along the Gulf of Aqaba. We passed the meeting point of four countries—Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel—and boarded yachts divided into groups of 20 people each. Sailing past the historic Salah ad-Din Fortress, also known as Pharaoh's Island Fortress, felt magical. Divers filled out consent forms for their underwater adventures while others swam freely with rented masks and fins or their own equipment. Gear was plentiful, and staff coordinated seamlessly between yachts to ensure everyone got what was needed. Few used wetsuits in the warm July waters, but sizes were available even for larger individuals. A dedicated trainer and photographer assisted each diver, creating unforgettable underwater memories. Lunch aboard the yacht was a feast of shrimp, fish, chicken, vegetables, fruits, fish stew, and breads—absolutely delicious! Unlimited beverages, including soda, tea, and coffee, added to the indulgence. Back at the dock, Bedouin children sold handcrafted wooden camels and bracelets for a dollar. Sharing snacks like fruit or pastries brought from the hotel felt both heartwarming and bittersweet because their tough lives are a poignant part of Bedouin culture. Helping them in small ways—whether buying crafts or sharing food—offers a moment of kindness amid the stark life contrasts. Returning to the hotel for our all-inclusive dinner while they remained on the scorching sands was sobering—a reminder of societal disparities. We arrived back happy and fulfilled, laden with memories. Sleep came easily after such an adventure. This well-organized and warm experience was nothing short of a masterpiece. Kudos to the “Lost Land” organizers, guides, and staff! We’ll certainly return and are excited to see the new projects they’ll create around Sinai's incredible places.

We had an absolutely fantastic experience with our driver throughout our trip around Jordan. He took us from Amman to Petra, then to Wadi Rum, Aqaba on the Red Sea, the Dead Sea, and finally back to Amman. From start to finish, he was professional, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable. I took a local bus from Aqaba city to South Beach (JOD 1, 20 min), paid JOD 5 entry to the public South Beach strip (sunbed + umbrella included at some chunks, others free sand), and snorkeled the coral off the Egyptian border buoy—visibility 20 m, fewer fish than the Marine Park but free-access. Then I booked a Wadi Rum jeep the next day from Aqaba (JOD 50/person shared, 1.5 hr transfer + 4 hr drive to Lawrence’s Spring, Khazali Canyon, sunset dune). The contrast is the point: morning on the Red Sea turquoise, afternoon in rust desert with the same sun. Mistake: I tried to do both in one day—Aqaba→Rum→back is 6 hours driving, not worth it; sleep in Rum village. Second mistake: I paid JOD 5 for South Beach thinking it in cluded the Coral Garden snorkel spot—it doesn’t, that’s a separate 2 km walk north. Card works at Aqaba hotels, cash only at South Beach shacks (JOD 2 for hummus wrap). Worth it? South Beach is a cheap Red Sea fix; Wadi Rum is the soul of the trip but needs an overnight. If you’re Jordan-short on time, pick Rum, not the beach. Discussion: is a JOD 5 Red Sea morning worth more than saving the day for Wadi Rum’s dunes, or do you need both to feel Jordan’s edge?

#arrivalguide I slept in St Catherine town (1,600 m, 3.5 hr from Sharm by bus, 80 EGP; taxi 400 EGP) and started the climb at 1:30 am with a headtorch. Two routes: the Camel Path (wide switchbacks, 3.5 km, 750 m gain, 2.5–3 hr to summit) and the Steps of Repentance (3,750 monk-cut stairs, steeper, 2 hr, knee destruction). I took the Camel Path up, Steps down. Monastery entry is 200 EGP, opens 9 am—you pass it at the base before dawn.[citation:none] Summit fee: none, but the Elijah chapel coffee hut sells tea at 50 EGP and rents a blanket for 30 EGP—take the blanket, it was –4°C in February at 2,285 m. Guides loiter at the car park offering “permission” for 200 EGP; not required, ignore them. Bedouin run bonfire stalls mid-path with 10 EGP Pepsi. Mistake: I wore running shoes, the steps down shredded my calves—mountaineering boots or at least trail shoes. No water sold above the monastery, carry 2 L. The sunrise itself breaks over the Gulf of Aqaba 60 km east—worth the cold. Security: Sinai has a tourist police checkpoint at the trailhead, passport checked, no drones. Best Oct–April; summer climbs kill people. Discussion: is the 1:30 am cattle-run worth the summit communion, or is a dusk climb and summit sleep-out better for solitude?
