#NovemberDestinations2025 Today I visited Mount Aso in Kumamoto, and I was truly awestruck by the power of nature! Seeing the Nakadake crater rumbling and belching white smoke, with a strong smell of sulfur in the air, was no joke! 😤 I was incredibly lucky to catch it open, and even saw the Tiffany Green lake in the crater, so beautiful it felt unreal. Kusasenri next door is also a must-see; the endless grasslands with grazing horses are perfect for a computer wallpaper! Standing here, I felt so small. This is definitely one of the most worthwhile and amazing places to visit in Kyushu! ⸻ 📝Mount Aso Summit Tips (Super Useful!) • 🔍 Must Check Before You Go: Always check the official website for "Crater Regulations Information." It may close if the toxic fumes are too high, so don't make a wasted trip! • 🚁 Helicopter Experience: If your budget allows, a helicopter tour is highly recommended. The view of the crater from a bird's-eye view is absolutely stunning. • 🧥 Dress Warmly and Protect Yourself from the Wind: There's no shelter on the mountain, and it's incredibly windy and cold. Bring a jacket regardless of the season. • 🐎 Kusasenri Horse Riding: Located opposite the volcano museum, you can enjoy a horseback riding experience. The photos taken here are incredibly cinematic. • 🍦 Volcanic Ash Ice Cream: A must-try at the rest stop! The grey sesame flavor is delicious and photogenic. This scenery is truly spectacular. Adjacent to it lies the main street known as "Aso Monzenmachi Shopping Street," which serves as the approach to the over 2,500-year-old Aso Shrine. This street is lined with charming old general stores, souvenir shops, and cafes. Strolling along the tree-shaded shopping street allows visitors to leisurely explore the area after paying their respects at Aso Shrine, savor local delicacies, and immerse themselves in the unique cultural atmosphere. Along the way, you'll also notice the "Mizuki" springs scattered throughout. "Mizuki" refers to drinking water spots. The spring water in Ichinomiya Town is sweet and has been regarded as the fountain of longevity since ancient times. The locals have always cherished and appreciated these springs. Over time, to allow more people to enjoy this pure and sweet spring water, around 20 wooden or stone "Mizuki" spots have been set up along the street to welcome visitors.

If you visit during the autumn foliage season, you'll witness the stunning golden-brown fields. Yufuin A trip to Kyushu wouldn't be complete without visiting the fairytale-like town of Yufuin. Stroll around, shop, and enjoy the charming atmosphere. During the autumn foliage season, the area around Kinrin Lake is adorned with green, yellow, orange, and red leaves, creating a breathtaking view.

A self-driving tour of Mount Aso is very convenient. Departing from a hotel near Kumamoto Airport at 10:00 AM, the drive takes about 40 minutes to reach Kusasenri. You can stop at the observation deck for photos. If there are many people, you can drive directly to the parking lot in front of the Mount Aso Museum (parking fee is generally 500 yen for four-wheeled vehicles). After taking photos and resting, continue driving for less than 10 minutes to reach the bus stop, which is also the entrance to the volcano. Further in, there are two control points: the first informs visitors that those with asthma or related illnesses are advised against going up the crater; the second is for parking, which costs 1000 yen per vehicle. Continue driving for about 5 to 10 minutes to reach the crater parking lot. After parking, you can walk to the crater for photos. If the wind direction changes, staff will restrict entry, and you will need to wait for the wind to change before you can enter again.

It’s so refreshing and soothing to the eyes and the soul 🌿 To the left, you can spot Mount Aso, an active volcano. On the day I visited, there was an eruption warning, so we couldn’t get closer. But honestly, just seeing it from afar was already so impressive! It’s the perfect place to relax, unwind, and give your tired mind a little break. 🫶 Around the area, there are adorable horses walking around 🐎 You can even ride them or take photos, but there’s an additional fee (not included in the tour). After exploring, there are plenty of food options nearby — from restaurants and souvenir shops to grilled horse meat skewers, which are quite famous here! Kishima-dake offers a breathtaking view of the Kusasenri grasslands and other scenic spots around Mount Aso. A 30-minute trek from the Kusasenri parking lot will take you to the summit. While the trail is not as challenging as a full-scale mountain climb, the steep slopes require a good amount of physical effort. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, such as sneakers! From the summit, a short walk will lead you to a viewpoint where you can see the iconic Komezuka. This is a must-visit spot to include in your Aso sightseeing itinerary! Around the crater: a total of 7 craters, only one is smoking, but there are walking around other quiet craters to feel, to the active crater as soon as you get off the car can smell sulfur (the day there is a yellow alert, special people are not recommended to approach!) Love nature I think it's worth a visit, but be sure to pay attention to sunscreen and watch the weather! (🌚 Tanned two degrees) I went the day at Grand View Peak a little foggy, can not see the volcano clearly, but up the mountain is much better, clear vision is really spectacular! 🏔️

Documenting my first self-driving trip in Japan 🇯🇵 - Mission completed ✅ While following the map, I realized I took a wrong turn and had to re-navigate 🧭. Unexpectedly, Google Maps directed me onto a narrow mountain road. The path was rugged and tight, and I was sweating nervously while driving, fearing I might slide down the mountain or scratch the car (thankfully, I bought full insurance ⚠️—a must-have). Eventually, I managed to get back onto a proper road. I felt like a female version of Takumi from Initial D 🏎️⛰️ during this adventure. Upon reaching Mount Aso 🌋, I thought the long drive was worth it. Although the volcano was the only attraction, it was still a sight worth seeing. ⚠️ Friendly reminder: It's extremely windy 💨, so avoid wearing hats—they might get blown off the mountain 😹.

Hidden Gem in Kyushu, an hour away from Fukuoka! Easily accessible via Shinkansen or an affordable 2hr bus ride from Fukuoka Airport. Kumamoto is a highly walkable city steep in history, culture and cuisine. Kumamoto Castle is often regarded as the top 3 castle in Japan. While the earthquake has inflicted substantial damage to it, a long and careful restoration plan is in progress to restore it. Visiting the castle now is still possible and the experience will be markedly different as you admire the restored castle while seeing it first hand the restoration works that’s ongoing around the castle compound. Make sure to earmark your evening of the 4th Saturday of each month to visit the Shirakawa Yoichi (Night Bazaar along the banks of Shirakawa). Lucky to bump into this bazaar without prior planning and totally enjoyed the matsuri vibes of the bazaar. The food options were highly international and traditional as well. Went during Sakura period and some of the stalls are just right below the Sakura tree. Great place to picnic too. Akagumi Ramen is a real treat, especially the miso braised offals. Should time allow, head to Aso region and visit the Aso Jinja, as well as the Monzenmachi Shopping Street right next to the shrine. Be sure to try the Katana Steam Bun and Beef Menchi that is absolutely delish. Flying out of Kumamoto is equally convenient if you are connecting/returning to a city that serves this route. Highly recommended to visit and spend 3 or 4 days in this city. Kurokawa Onsen is famous throughout the country! The surrounding area is a treasure trove of exquisite and spectacular spots! I highly recommend stopping by when you visit Kurokawa Onsen! 1st and 2nd photos📍Location: Take no Kuma Cafe A cafe in the middle of the countryside! A comfortable space where you can relax and enjoy tea while looking at the beautiful countryside! There are only two tables with air conditioning and heating, so it's best to take precautions on hot and cold days! There is a long line before opening, so we recommend arriving about 30 minutes before opening! 🚙12 minutes by car from Kurokawa Onsen 3rd and 4th photos📍Location: Nabegataki A spectacular waterfall that is also used in a commercial for a certain beverage manufacturer!
