In fact, there are far more places to visit in July and August than you might think—within two hours by high-speed train, you can zone out in a Lingnan garden, then take an overnight sleeper train to a secluded canyon waterfall with no crowds. This route takes you from Lingnan to northern Jiangxi, then through the mountain valleys of southern Gansu, all the way to the forests of Inner Mongolia. Every stop is cool, affordable, and the kids will have even more fun than you. 1️⃣ Foshan | Guangdong ⏰ Arrive at Qinghui Garden by 9 AM. It’s less crowded, and the breeze through the garden carries moisture. There’s a stone bench under the longan tree. Don’t enter through the main gate; go around to the small “Bamboo Garden” gate on the east side. When you exit, you’ll find a quiet bluestone alley. 🍜 At the alley entrance, the double-skin milk shop sells a bowl for 8 yuan, much richer than the one with lines on the pedestrian street. At noon, head to Xiqiao Mountain. Don’t drive up; take the bus from the south gate to Baofeng Temple stop. You can easily spend half a day. ⏰ Go to Sanli Yangdu at 4 PM. The sunlight turns the water golden. The park is full of shaded corridors, and kids can try hand-throwing clay—up to 61 people at a time. If they mess up, they can try again. The teachers are very patient. Avoid the popular shops on the main street; instead, turn into the alley to the quiet “Clay Fire Artisan” space. It’s less crowded, and they’ll fire your creations for free and mail them home. At night, visit the Ancient Kiln Folk Customs Expo Area. ⚠️ Night tickets cost half the daytime price. There are no tour groups, only a few locals strolling. The kiln ruins glow with warm yellow light. Kids will ask, “Can they really fire bowls here?” Nearby, a craftsman is repairing pottery, and you can sit and watch for 10 minutes. 🍜 After the expo, turn right into the alley for a bowl of alkaline rice cake for 6 yuan, topped with spicy sauce. It’s more authentic than any trendy shop. 4️⃣ Longnan | Gansu Wen County’s Tianchi Lake surprised me the most on this route. ⏰ Arrive before 8 AM when the mist hasn’t lifted. The lake looks like it’s covered with a veil. Kids will say, “Mom, look, the water is smoking.” Walking half the lakeside trail is enough. The first half shows the water colors most like Jiuzhaigou; the second half you can turn back to save energy for the stairs later. Guan’egou is wilder, but only the first 2 kilometers are easy to walk. If you have a baby, a hip seat carrier is more reliable. 🍜 At the valley entrance, the spicy potato mash costs 5 yuan a serving. The chili is pungent, and kids will ask for more after half a bowl. ⚠️ It gets dark early in the mountains. Start heading out by 4:30 PM, or the temperature drops quickly after sunset. 🚄 It’s about an hour by taxi from Longnan Station to Wen County. A round-trip car rental costs 300 yuan, good for two or three families sharing. 5️⃣ Ya’an | Sichuan If you only have time for one place, I recommend heading straight to Bifengxia. The pandas have just finished eating bamboo and are all sprawled out in the sun. Kids can lean on the railing and count how many times they roll over. If your child is too young for long hikes, just visit the children’s playground ticket area at the canyon entrance. Renting a car from Ulanhot is the most cost-effective option. It’s a two-hour one-way trip, costing about 300 yuan. Splitting the fare among several people works well. 8️⃣ Jilin Songhua Lake is the last and coolest stop. ⏰ Take the lake cruise at 3 PM. The trip lasts about an hour. The wind is strong on the boat, so bring a light jacket for the kids. On the small island in the lake’s center, grilled fish is sold for 10 yuan each. Kids can squat by the shore, nibbling while watching water birds. If you have more time, visit Rime Island nearby. But ⚠️ there’s no rime in July and August—only reeds and an abandoned old village.
