All Trip Moments about Barnaul | Travel Experiences
One of the most underrated cities in Russia is Barnaul.
🌄 This city is my personal insider tip: it's underrated because it doesn't have crowds of tourists, but it does have a true Siberian atmosphere, contrasts between the old center and modern buildings, space, light, stunning sunsets, and amazing views.
📋 Here's why Barnaul is worth adding to your wishlist:
1. The Ob River embankment – here you can catch sunrises and sunsets, watch the gentle flow of the river, and feel the tranquility (especially in the morning).
2. The old center: enchanted streets with red buildings and 19th-century architecture, where it's easy to imagine the region's past.
3. Local cafes with signature menus and cozy interiors – you can lose yourself for a day here over delicious drinks and Siberian cuisine.
4. The "slow city" atmosphere: there's lots of light, greenery, little fuss, and the air is truly fresh – the perfect place to recharge!
📸 Unexpected: Barnaul turns out to be surprisingly photogenic, and the daylight literally plays on the architecture—especially the red buildings of the old city center.
🌤️ The best time to visit is May-September (sun, greenery, and stunning pink sunsets).
👌 Life hack: Book an apartment in the historic center to experience the atmosphere of an old Siberian city!
❤️ Save for later—would you come to Barnaul?

Barnaul Eats Guide🌟
✨ Barnaul. The Gornaya Apteka Museum-Restaurant – a place where history meets taste! ✨
"History, cuisine, and atmosphere – all in one: the Gornaya Apteka Museum-Restaurant in Barnaul"
If you're planning a trip to Barnaul, be sure to include the Gornaya Apteka Museum-Restaurant (42 Polzunov Street) in your itinerary. This isn't just a restaurant, but a journey through time – an 18th-century building, an architectural monument, once housed the first pharmacy in Altai.
What's special:
Historical atmosphere: a hall in the style of a 19th-century merchant's house, vaulted rooms, antique furniture and decor.
Unusual and authentic menu: Siberian ingredients, Altai herbal tinctures, dishes you won't find in ordinary establishments.
Museum + restaurant combination: you can start with a tour of the pharmacy museum, then move on to dinner – the effect is even more profound.
Practical information:
Address: 42 Polzunov Street, Barnaul.
2GIS
Hours: The restaurant is open from approximately 12:00 PM to 12:00 AM.
Average bill: approximately 2,500 rubles.
Tip: Book a table in advance, as the place has a unique atmosphere and is popular among tourists.
Why it's worth adding to Trip.com recommendations:
This place stands out from the ordinary restaurants: it's a combination of a museum and a restaurant.
Interesting not only for foodies but also for history and architecture buffs.
Located in the center of Barnaul, it's convenient for tourists.
Suitable for both an evening dinner and an unusual cultural experience.

Ardecofe! A Greenhouse Cafe in Barnaul.
My significant other and I have a Sunday tradition: grabbing breakfast out at a pre-chosen spot instead of eating at home. This time, we went with Ardecofe.
Barnaul is home to the famous House Under the Spire. It's the symbol of the city, featured on countless postcards and magnets—and this cafe happens to be located right inside it. The real highlight here is the sheer number of plants; it honestly feels like a greenhouse. The interior is incredibly charming, and the sound of birdsong (they have live birds in the cafe) makes you feel like you're out in the woods. You won't even mind the wait, as you'll spend that time taking in all the cool interior details.
The food is delicious and the service is fast, though to be fair, there weren't too many people there that morning. We loved everything we ordered. The flavors were completely natural with no artificial enhancers, exactly how we like it. They have a huge selection, especially when it comes to drinks—everything from espresso tonics to pu-erh raf coffee. I highly recommend checking it out. If you're visiting Barnaul as a tourist, it’s a great two-in-one experience: checking off a famous local landmark and enjoying a lovely cafe.

Barnaul. What to do in the capital of the Altai Krai?
Barnaul is the capital of the Altai Krai, a city with a rich history that began as a silver smelter owned by the Demidov industrialists.
What to see in Barnaul: I've compiled a selection of the top locations in the city and surrounding area.
1. Nagorny Park and the Ob River Embankment
This is the city's calling card. It features the huge letters "BARNAUL."
The park offers the best panoramic views of the Ob River and the New Bridge. In the center of the park stands the majestic Church of St. John the Baptist. A wide staircase leads to the embankment, especially beautiful when illuminated at night.
2. Gornaya Apteka (42 Polzunov Street)
This is a unique museum and restaurant complex in an 18th-century building. It used to be the first pharmacy in Siberia. You can take a tour of the cellars, try on an old pharmacist's uniform, and be sure to dine at a restaurant where they cook according to ancient Siberian recipes (try maral or wild fish dishes). I stocked up a bit here: pine cone jam, maral-based preparations, and pine nuts.
3. Barnaul Arbat (Malotobolskaya Street). A pedestrian 🅿️ area in the historic center. Interesting sculptures are installed here, and fairs and festivals are held. The recently renovated Old Bazaar is nearby.
4. Demidovskaya Square
This is an architectural ensemble in the classical style, known as the Corner of St. Petersburg. In the center stands the 14-meter Demidov Column (an obelisk commemorating the 100th anniversary of mining in Altai).
5. World of Stone Museum and Ruslan Dultsev Car Theft Museum
World of Stone Altai is a mountainous region, home to an amazing collection of minerals.
The Car Theft Museum is a very unusual place with a ton of strange exhibits, thief traps, and stories from the lives of Soviet motorists.
6. The House Under the Spire
The main symbol of Soviet Barnaul on Lenin Avenue. This Stalinist Empire-style apartment building is considered the zero kilometer mark and a meeting place for locals. Located in the center, it's hard to miss.
Also, if you have time, be sure to visit Srostki (the birthplace of Vasily Shukshin, 200 km from the city) or Belokurikha (a resort town, 230 km away). Even in Barnaul itself, you can truly experience the spirit of Siberia in 1-2 days.
Srostki has stunning scenery; I visited it while on a long trip through the Altai Republic. On the way back to Novosibirsk, our group stopped by this beautiful place. #Barnaul #Altai #travel_russia

Picturesque Villages of Altay
#springtravel
Among the most famous cultural landscapes is Hemu Village, located near Kanas Lake. The village is known for its wooden houses, winding rivers, and smoke rising gently from chimneys in the early morning.
Hemu is inhabited mainly by the Tuva people, an ethnic minority with deep historical roots in the Altai region. Their lifestyle reflects a strong connection with nature:
Herding animals across mountain pastures
Living in traditional wooden homes or yurts
Practicing ancient customs and music

Unique ecological zones in China- Altay
#springtravel
Altay Prefecture is one of the most extraordinary natural regions in northwestern Xinjiang. Located at the northern edge of China and surrounded by the magnificent Altai Mountains, Altay is a land where forests, lakes, rivers, grasslands, and snow-covered peaks exist together in remarkable harmony. Bordering Kazakhstan, Russia, and Mongolia, the region is influenced by both Central Asian and Siberian landscapes, making it one of the most unique ecological zones in China.

The famous Irtysh River in Altay
#springtravel
Below is a more detailed and in-depth English explanation of the beauty of Altay, including its geography, landscapes, seasons, wildlife, and culture.
The famous Irtysh River also originates in this region. It is one of the few rivers in China that flows into the Arctic Ocean basin, traveling through Kazakhstan and Russia before eventually reaching the Arctic watershed. This geographical feature makes Altay particularly important in hydrology and ecology.

Geographic Beauty and Unique Location of Altay
#springtravel
Altay lies in the far north of Xinjiang and forms part of the greater Altai mountain system that stretches across several countries in Central Asia. The Altai Mountains are among the oldest mountain ranges in the world and serve as a natural boundary between China and neighboring countries.
Because of its location, Altay has a rare combination of ecosystems that include:
Boreal forests (similar to those in Siberia)
Vast grasslands and meadows
Glacial rivers
Alpine lakes
Snow-covered peaks

🎈The place is located between the administration building and Surkova Street (75a Karla Marksa Street). This establishment was open to hotel guests. The menu is extensive.
🎈There's usually no parking (only late in the evening). There's underground parking, but it's for building employees. The establishment has been open less than a year.
🎈The atmosphere is pleasant and there are plenty of tables. Usually very few customers. There are waiters.
🎈Average bill: 1,700 rubles. Breakfast starts at 7:30 AM.
