Don't Raft the Upper Ganges in Monsoon: Rishikesh's Marine Drive Rapid — traveler post in Rishikesh

Don't Raft the Upper Ganges in Monsoon: Rishikesh's Marine Drive Rapid

#travellikealocal I Learned to Respect the Monsoon Current Rishikesh sells itself as India’s rafting capital, but the Upper Ganges in monsoon is a different river. I booked a run in July, excited for “Marine Drive Rapid,” only to watch water levels rise so fast that operators cancelled launches for safety. Locals said the current can flip rafts in seconds—even strong swimmers have been swept away. I swapped the adrenaline for a quiet walk along the Ram Jhula, watching the Ganges churn muddy and powerful below. My take: rafting here is seasonal, and no Instagram clip is worth ignoring a weather closure. If you visit between late June and September, ask operators about real-time river alerts and never pressure a guide to launch. The best local move? Wait it out, sip chai, and go when the water calms. How do you balance adventure with respecting weather you can’t control?

Don't Bathe the Ganges Ghat Steps: Rishikesh's Lakshman Jhula Undercut — traveler post in Rishikesh

Don't Bathe the Ganges Ghat Steps: Rishikesh's Lakshman Jhula Undercut

#travelsafetytips Sacred Water, Hidden Currents Rishikesh draws spiritual seekers and adventure travelers alike, with its riverside ghats, temples, and the iconic Lakshman Jhula bridge. But when I visited the steps leading down to the Ganges, I saw how deceptively strong the current was. Even a few meters from shore, the water pulled hard. Locals warned me not to bathe near the undercut edges—people had been swept away. The ghat steps can be slippery with algae and may be undercut by erosion. I stayed above the waterline and only entered designated swimming areas with lifeguards. I wore water shoes and avoided going in during early morning when the river runs cold and fast. Lakshman Jhula is a suspended bridge over the Ganges, offering great views but no railings in some spots. I kept my distance from the edge and avoided stopping in the middle during busy times. I stayed in a guesthouse in Tapovan and explored on foot and by auto-rickshaw. The town has a peaceful vibe, but the river is powerful. Enjoy the ghats, take photos, and admire the rituals—but treat the water with caution.

Incredible Solo Tour Across Northern India and Ladakh — traveler post in Rishikesh

Incredible Solo Tour Across Northern India and Ladakh

After my first trip to India earlier this year, I once again chose Forts & Palaces to organize this journey. This time, I traveled solo as a woman, exploring Northern India all the way to Ladakh. Once again, the trip was planned in a very personal and flexible manner right from the beginning. Bahadur accompanied me throughout the trip, making many special moments possible. His extensive experience, calm and warm nature, and above all, his flexibility made this journey very unique for me. I never felt like I was merely following a predetermined itinerary. If I wanted to see something spontaneously, it was always possible. Plans could also be easily adjusted whenever something interesting came up along the way. My route took me from Delhi to Haridwar, Rishikesh, Chandigarh, and Amritsar, continuing to Dharamsala and Manali, and eventually traversing the awe-inspiring Manali-Leh road to Leh, the Nubra Valley, and Alchi. Some of my best experiences arose from this flexibility. In Chandigarh, we spontaneously visited the Le Corbusier Centre and ended up joining a tour of the government district that led us into the Parliament building. Often, we found ourselves off the beaten path, exploring small alleyways and immersing ourselves in the local life, meeting incredible people. A conversation with young individuals in a remote mountain village remains particularly memorable to me. Of course, there were major highlights as well: the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the border ceremony, the breathtaking drive from Manali to Leh, the high mountain passes, Leh itself, the Nubra Valley with its sand dunes and camels, and the ancient monasteries of Hemis, Thiksey, and Alchi. Traveling alone through India with a private guide and driver offered me a remarkable blend of freedom and safety. I could decide what I wanted to do, while always feeling well taken care of. Our driver was exceptional—calm, dependable, and extremely skilled, especially on the challenging roads and mountain passes. I always felt completely secure. The background organization worked flawlessly. Bahadur’s son quickly and efficiently managed any changes or spontaneous arrangements. This balance of solid planning alongside the freedom to adapt during the journey was what made this trip so extraordinary for me. My most important tip for other women: Be brave and dare to discover India beyond the well-known paths. Venture into the side streets, be curious, and connect with the locals. Often, the best interactions and experiences are found where you least expect them. My heartfelt thanks go out to the entire team, Bahadur, and our driver for this exceptional, personal, and unforgettable trip.
