This is the most stunning time of the day, as the sky gradually transitions through shades of orange, red, and purple before deepening into a rich blue. Standing there, taking in the view, felt like being inside a living painting—it was absolutely breathtaking. Nighttime and the Glow of Lights As night fell, the lights along the wall and the lanterns were illuminated, revealing the intricate pathways and towers of the Great Wall. Sitting by an old stone window, gazing out at the scenery with a lantern in hand, evoked a feeling of warmth and enchantment. It’s hard to put into words, but I completely fell in love with this place.

Not gonna lie, the waiting area comes through with comfy seats, free drinks, and snacks. So even when you’re straight-up starving, the vibe is chill and you’re not left hangry 😅. When our number popped up, we went upstairs to level two where the main dining hall is—plus some private rooms for those wanting extra privacy. The whole floor was packed with hungry diners, tables loaded with that iconic roasted duck. The real highlight? How to see the Great Wall of China without the crowds. 1️⃣ Choose the right section. Forget Badaling (the main gateway for tour groups). Instead, choose less popular but equally picturesque sections: Mutianyu, Simatai, or Jinshanling. We chose Mutianyu—it's beautifully restored, yet not overcrowded. 2️⃣ Arrive after lunch. Most groups and independent tourists storm the wall in the morning. Arrive after 3:00 PM—by then, the main crowds have already died down. We arrived at 3:00 PM and strolled leisurely, enjoying the views almost entirely alone. To avoid being tied to bus schedules, we booked a transfer directly with the hotel. It's convenient, but more expensive. You can also book a taxi through the Didi app, which is significantly cheaper. We left the wall at 4:50 PM, only because we really wanted to ride the toboggan!
