DarongShan National Forest Park, around 23 km from Yulin downtown, is a stunning landscape with mountains, forest, reservoir, waterfall and windmills. As it's such a big forest park with hundreds of mountains, and the main attractions are far away from each other, it's highly recommended to visit by car 🚘rather than public transportation. If you go there in National Day, prepare yourself with enough food and drinks because of traffic jam😆 There is an abandoned reservoir 🏞with clean water and surrounded by green forest. Nice view of the overall reservoir. While some people go there for swimming and BBQ. Besides that, DarongShan National Forest Park is also famous for its vast grasslands, where you can enjoy camping🏕and paddling in the biggest grassland with a lake nearby. I was lucky to find out the Lianhua Waterfall(莲花瀑布) after one hour hike and steep descent in the hidden forest. While others squeeze into popular cities to see the back of someone’s head, I prefer to take my kids to places that sound cool just by their names. These 8 spots are either so off the beaten path that locals want to keep them secret or seriously underrated. Summer is the perfect time to visit. 01 Dalian | Liaoning When bringing kids to Dalian, don’t rush straight to Tiger Beach. I arrived at Tiger Beach Ocean Park at 10 AM. The beluga whales and penguins do delight kids, but there’s a lot of walking between exhibits, and little legs get cranky. ⚠️ A stroller is a must, don’t skip it. In the afternoon, head to Tangli Lake Park instead. This is a local secret cool spot. The dense shade and lake breeze drop the temperature by about 5 degrees. Lay out a picnic mat and you can relax all afternoon. In the evening, visit Xinghai Square where seagulls chase bread crumbs and kids can laugh out loud. Save Jinshitan National Tourist Resort for the next morning. Go early when it’s less crowded. Bring enough water and snacks. Don’t expect to buy anything halfway. 05 Zhongwei | Ningxia At Shapotou in Zhongwei, kids can’t stop playing in the sand. We rented sandboards and slid down from the top of the dunes. The wind rushed into our collars, and kids screamed with laughter for over an hour. In the Yellow River area, you can ride a sheepskin raft, drifting gently on the river. The contrast between desert sand and green oasis on both banks is striking. ⏰ Visit the desert area after 6 PM. For families with kids, I recommend staying directly in the old town. A guesthouse in the alleys near Lijing Gate costs just over 200 yuan per night, and various soup restaurants are right downstairs. ⏰ Leave before 8:00 AM and head to Longmen Grottoes. Before the large tour groups arrive, walk slowly along the Yi River. The platform in front of the Lushena Buddha is not crowded, and kids can run around freely. The whole trip takes about 2 hours. Strollers can use the main path, so you don't have to climb too many stairs. At noon, return to the old town for a bowl of beef soup.📍 The "Old Town Tofu Soup" on Minzhu Street is popular with locals; the soup is fresh, and the shredded flatbread is filling. A family of three can eat for 30 yuan. In the afternoon, skip White Horse Temple; it's too crowded. Go to Wangcheng Park instead. Admission is 20 yuan, and there's a small zoo where kids can see tigers and feed rabbits. The mountaintop meadow is windy, so you don't need to run to fly a kite; just let go, and it will soar. 🍜 At the foot of the mountain, there's a "Rongshan Local Cuisine Restaurant." Stir-fried free-range chicken and mountain bamboo shoots are their specialties. The portions are large; three dishes are enough to fill a family of three, costing less than 40 yuan per person. ⚠️ Absolutely do not go up the mountain on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Accommodation on the mountain is scarce, and temperatures drop quickly after dark. If you don't book in advance, you might have to spend the night in your car. Arrive before 9:00 AM, play until 3:00 PM, and then head down; the timing will be perfect. 03 Wenzhou | Zhejiang I deliberated for a long time about Wenzhou, whether to go to Yandang Mountain or Nanxi River. With kids, I recommend Yandang Mountain more; it has water in the mountains, so it's not dry and hot. Yandang Mountain tickets are combined for different scenic spots. Just go to Lingfeng; students get half price. The Lingfeng scenic area is not large; you can finish it in 2 hours. The rain comes and goes quickly. 04 Shijiazhuang | Hebei The name Shijiazhuang doesn't sound cool, but the area around Zhaozhou Bridge is several degrees cooler than the city. The river water flows year-round under the bridge, and the breeze is incredibly comfortable. Zhaozhou Bridge admission is 40 yuan, and children are free. The bridge itself takes 20 minutes to see, but you can spend an entire afternoon in the park next to it. 📍 There's a shallow water area at the east gate of the park, where the water is just above the ankles. The average temperature in August is just over 20 degrees Celsius, and you still need a blanket at night. Tangwang River Forest and Stone Scenic Area is the core attraction. Admission is 70 yuan, and the scenic shuttle bus costs an additional 20 yuan. If you have kids, definitely buy the bus ticket; the mountain road is long, and walking it purely will exhaust adults. Kids are more interested than adults in the strange-shaped rocks in the scenic area; they'll imagine them as various animals. 📍 The path at Yixiantian (One-Line Sky) is the narrowest; larger people have to turn sideways, but kids will happily squeeze through. 🍜 Blueberries are sold at the scenic area entrance for 10 yuan a box, even cheaper than in city supermarkets. Children aged 7 and above can walk it; carry younger ones. Looking down from the plank road, the danger of Jianmen Pass cannot be captured in photos.
