🇳🇿 New Zealand Road Trip - Storytelling with Pictures #11 Day 11: This morning, I woke up feeling refreshed and went for a walk to enjoy the sea views in Bluff, New Zealand's southernmost city. Afterward, I checked out and drove back to Invercargill to buy supplies at Countdown (a supermarket in every city, similar to Lotus's in Thailand) and fill up on gas before continuing along Highway 1 to explore the day without any plans. We stopped at Mataura, Clinton, and Balclutha (small, quiet towns). We continued on a dirt road, passing several large sheep farms, to Kaka Point, a small town with the Nugget Point Lighthouse at the tip of a peninsula jutting into the vast South Pacific Ocean. Chile lies on the opposite coast, approximately 9,500 kilometers away, or a 16-hour flight. Here, we saw a seal up close. We then continued on to Dunedin, one of the South Island's major cities and a major port for imports and exports. We then drove along the seaside road to Portobello, a town located about 20 kilometers northeast of Dunedin. If you're planning a road trip like the two of us, be sure to drive carefully and follow the law, as the fines are prohibitively high.

Fowlers Bluff Oysters A simple no frills eating area. however pride and prize for their Oysters. On the spot shuck opened Bluff Oysters which is fresh and succulent and juicy. Price ain’t that cheap . NZD50 for a dozen and of course they have it in half a dozen as well. Served with lemons. You can have it battered as well thus I tried another half dozen at Nzd20. Felt the battered ones not as fresh and good thus will suggest to give it a pass imo. Just go for the fresh ones and throw in some chip. Go for the fish and chip in another place. Bluff Kitchen This is a licensed mobile operator which run the kitchen on a caravan. I ordered my Blue Cod Fish & Chip here as I like the Wild caught Blue Cod and not other cheaper alternatives. Price for just Blue cod battered fish is nzd18 and you can load in fries at Nzd5-8 . This is the first time I was served a very generous portion of Blue Cod given the same price I paid in other towns and cities. Have a cup of coffee at a cafe across the street to complete the day.

Bluff is New Zealand’s southernmost town, and it is a Port,a dramatic landscapes, maritime heritage and lots of history. And most importantly, it is a gateway to Steward Island (please see my segment on Steward Island) I asked and realised majority of the residents there are not even born in Bluff and many are migrants for other cities in NZ. Despite a small town, it has its medical centre, police station, grocery store ,Four Square and a few cafes, restaurants, Pubs and even a gym and self service laundry kiosk. Weather: Be prepared for the "roaring and howling winds especially at night" – strong winds are common. Accommodation: The eagle lodge or a backpacker lodge which is previously a Post Office. I stayed in a private room with shared bathroom which is newly renovated. Thing to do STIRLING POINT- you see a lighthouse, a famous sign, a chic restaurant and walking tracks which take you along the coast and Battery Observation Post, part of Bluff's coastal defences, then up to Motupohue Bluff Hill Lookout. BLUFF HILL- you can drive up or walk up for a good view of of the Southern island. Do watch out for fur seals and sea lions colonies by the beaches. What to eat- It is a must to eat the oysters from Bluff. It is seasonal from March to August. (please note.) Where to eat them - High end Oyster Cove restaurant with excellent view as it is located high on hilltop. Or at Fowler’s BLUFF Oysters . They serves fresh oysters and a dozen cost me nzd50 and half a dozen battered ones at $20. I would suggest to eat the fresh one and pass on the battered. Blue cod fish and chips. Again , fork out more at Oyster Cove restaurant or join me to eat by the sea at a mobile eatery at Bluff Kitchen, a licensed mobile operator on a caravan. The Blue cod fish and chip cost Nzd25 but it is the most generous portion I ever taken in New Zealand.
