Savoie travel guide and discussion

Stepping into Annecy feels like discovering a picturesque alpine fairytale where turquoise waters meet jagged limestone peaks. Nestled right on the northern tip of Lake Annecy in the French Alps, this historic old town is world-famous for its web of crystal-clear canals, flower-draped bridges, and pastel-colored medieval houses. Wandering through the bustling pedestrian cobblestone lanes as the gentle sound of flowing water echoes beneath your feet and the majestic mountains tower overhead was an utterly enchanting and refreshing experience. 💧✨ . 📅 What I経験 (What I experienced) · The Palais de l'Île: Standing on the historic bridges to admire the iconic 12th-century stone prison sitting proudly on a triangular islet right in the middle of the Thiou Canal, one of the most photographed monuments in France. · Exploring the Vieille Ville: Spending hours getting delightfully lost in the medieval alleys lined with artisan cheese shops, local markets, and colorful pastel facades that glow in the afternoon sun. · Swimming in Lake Annecy: Renting a paddleboard or taking a refreshing dip in Europe's cleanest lake, framed by dramatic alpine peaks dropping straight down into the deep blue water. . 🏨 Where I stayed · I stayed in a charming, historic boutique hotel housed in a renovated stone building right along one of the old town canals. Waking up early to the sound of flowing water and stepping out for a morning croissant before the crowds arrived was absolute serenity. 🛏️☕ . 🍴 My culinary highlights · Savoyard mountain cuisine is rich, comforting, and deeply satisfying. I savored a bubbling, piping-hot *tartiflette* made with reblochon cheese, potatoes, bacon, and onions, paired with a crisp glass of white wine from the nearby vineyards of Savoie. 🧀🥔 . 📌 My tips for visiting · Rent a Bike to Tour the Lake: Annecy features an incredible, dedicated cycling path (*Voie Verte*) built on an old railway line that stretches along the eastern shore of the lake, offering stunning views at every turn. · Visit on Market Days: The old town hosts a vibrant open-air market on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, where local vendors sell fresh cheeses, cured meats, and regional delicacies. · Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes: The historic center is entirely pedestrianized and paved with traditional cobblestones, so leave the heels behind and opt for sturdy walking shoes. 📸🎒 . #Annecy #FrenchAlps #FranceTravel #VisitFrance #TravelDeep #VeniceOfTheAlps #LakeAnnecy #BucketList #ExploreFrance #TravelDiaries

Just returned from a week at the Savoy, and I must say, out of all the places we've been, this one truly deserves the gold medal 🏅. Elegant, clean, and with perfect rooms—hope to come back soon. Highly recommended! A special shoutout to Elisa from animation, the amazing guy at the Safari bar, and Rasha at the restaurant for her kindness and warm smile.

The architecture and scenery of Chamonix perfectly blend the natural wonders of the Alps with a rich historical and cultural atmosphere. As you walk through the town, look up to see snow-capped mountains and down to enjoy the picturesque town views. 🏘️ Unique architecture and neighborhoods · Architectural style: The town's architecture blends French, Swiss, and Belgian elements, reflecting its cultural character as a meeting point of three countries. The core district preserves old Savoyard charm, with streets lined with cafes, mountaineering gear shops, and boutiques, creating a very international atmosphere. Photos 1–10. · Historical landmarks: The town square features bronze statues of Jacques Balmat and Dr. Paccard, who made the first ascent of Mont Blanc, commemorating the origins of modern mountaineering. As the host of the first Winter Olympics in 1924, Chamonix is also steeped in sporting glory. ⛪️ Saint-Michel Church This is the town's landmark and spiritual center, bearing nearly a thousand years of history. Photos 13–18. · History and style: The church was originally built in 1119. After fires and reconstructions, the current main structure is a Baroque-style building from the 17th to 18th centuries (1707–1709), characterized by its onion-shaped dome. It was listed as a French historical monument in 1979. · Architectural details: The oldest existing part is the 12th-century bell tower. Inside, highlights include the Empire-style altar (crafted in 1737–1738) and the pipe organ installed in 1992, which was split into two parts to avoid obstructing the main stained glass window. · Visitor information: The church is open to the public for free year-round, from approximately 6:00 AM–7:00 PM daily. It is located in the Church Square in the town center. 🏞️ Natural and town scenery · River Arve: This river, formed by glacial meltwater, runs through the town. The water has a unique milky white or white-green hue, creating a classic scene with the flowers on both banks. Photo 11. · Snow-capped mountain backdrop: No matter which street you stroll down, you can almost always look up and see the majestic Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe. This is truly the most breathtaking aspect of Chamonix. Photos 19, 20. Strolling through Chamonix, every step feels like walking inside a postcard.

SaVoy Beach. You can rent a transparent boat on the beach for beautiful photos. You can also go a little further from the shore to explore the underwater world. As it turns out, most excursions stop at the beach, as it's considered beautiful and the underwater world is fascinating. Coconuts are sold on the beach for 250 pesos, and shaki for 200-250 pesos. You can also order fresh fish and seafood for cooking. A table with a beautiful view is set up right on the beach. The beach is located in the north of the island. The water is very calm, a wonderful place that I highly recommend. #beach #boracay #savoy

France has Paris and Provence. But in the shadow of the French Alps lies a town that feels like a watercolor brought to life. Annecy is a medieval settlement of pastel-colored houses, flower-lined canals, and narrow arcaded streets. Behind it, Lake Annecy stretches like a sheet of turquoise glass, ringed by mountains. They call it the Venice of the Alps. Here is how to explore this lakeside dream and save money with Trip.com. 1. The Old Town at Dawn: Canals and Cobblestones Annecy's old town is a maze of pedestrian streets, canals, and stone bridges. By 10 AM, the lanes fill with visitors. Come at 6:30 AM instead. The water in the canals is still. The shutters are closed. The only sound is the distant rush of the Thiou River and the coo of pigeons on the rooftops. The pastel facades glow pink and yellow in the first light. You will have the most romantic streets in France to yourself. Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline map for Annecy. It shows you the quietest corners and the hidden passageways that most tourists miss. The best photos are from the Pont Perrière and the Rue du Pâquier, where the canal curves gently beneath overhanging flowers. 2. The Palais de l'Isle: The Postcard Icon In the middle of the Thiou River stands the Palais de l'Isle, a 12th-century castle that has served as a prison, a mint, and a courthouse. Its triangular shape sits perfectly in the water, reflected in the green depths. It is the most photographed building in Annecy. Inside, the museum tells the story of the town's history. Come early or late. The light is softest at the edges of the day. Money Hack: Buy a combined ticket on Trip.com that includes the Palais de l'Isle and the Château d'Annecy. You save about 30%. The castle on the hill offers panoramic views of the town and the lake. The climb is steep but worth every step. 3. Lake Annecy: Swimming in Turquoise Lake Annecy is one of the cleanest lakes in Europe. Its water is so clear you can see the bottom meters below. The lakeside promenade is perfect for walking, cycling, or simply sitting and staring. Rent a paddleboard or a kayak and drift out onto the water. The mountains rise on every side. The Alps are so close you feel like you could touch them. Budget Advice: Skip the expensive boat tours. Rent a kayak from the public beach instead. It costs a fraction of the price and gives you the same views. Check Trip.com for a "Lake Annecy Watersports" package that includes equipment rental and a lesson. The water is calm in the morning, perfect for beginners. 4. Food That Tastes Like the Alps Annecy's cuisine is a blend of French and Alpine influences. Try Tartiflette — a baked dish of potatoes, reblochon cheese, lardons, and onions. Order Raclette — melted cheese scraped over potatoes and charcuterie, a mountain tradition. And do not miss Tarte aux Myrtilles — a blueberry tart that tastes like summer in the Alps. Where to Eat: Skip the restaurants directly on the canal. They charge for the view. Walk into the side streets and find La Ciboulette or Le Freti, where locals eat. The food is authentic, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a glass of local Savoie wine when you book through the app. Where to Stay? Book on Trip.com a guesthouse in the old town. Look for something on Rue Sainte-Claire or near the Château. You will sleep in a building with wooden beams, a spiral staircase, and a view of the canal. The evenings are quiet after the day-trippers leave, and the streets glow with lantern light. Conclusion: Annecy is not a secret. It is a legend. But it is a legend that lives up to the hype. It is a place of water and stone, of flowers and light. The lake is so blue it hurts. The mountains are so close they feel like guardians. It is a town to wander slowly, to sit by the canal with a coffee, to swim in water so clear it feels like flying. France has many beautiful places, but Annecy is the one that makes you believe in fairy tales. Come and see for yourself. The Alps are waiting. #trip_com #France #Annecy #annecytravel #FrenchAlps #LakeAnnecy #BudgetTravel #EuropeGuide #traveleurope #VeniceoftheAlps #OldTownAnnecy #AlpineDream #FrenchHiddenGems #LakesideCharm

If you’re looking for a spectacular alpine hike in the French Alps, the trail to Lac des Cerces and Lac Rond, close to the famous Col du Galibier, is definitely worth adding to your list! 🇫🇷 The hike takes you through a beautiful high-mountain landscape, with green alpine meadows, rocky peaks and crystal-clear lakes surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the Massif des Cerces. The contrast between the turquoise water and the rugged mountains makes this one of those places where you constantly want to stop for photos. 📸🏔️ The Lac Rond is a beautiful first highlight, but continuing towards Lac des Cerces makes the hike even more rewarding. Once you reach the higher sections, the panoramic views over the surrounding peaks are simply incredible. 💡 Tips: Start early, especially in summer, as the area can get busy and temperatures can change quickly at altitude. Wear proper hiking shoes, bring enough water and check the weather before setting off. The trail is mountainous and includes some steeper sections, so allow yourself plenty of time to enjoy it. 📍 Location: Near Col du Galibier, Savoie / Hautes-Alpes, France 🥾 Highlights: Lac Rond • Lac des Cerces • Alpine meadows • Mountain panoramas 🏔️ Perfect for: hikers, photographers and anyone who loves spectacular mountain scenery Would you add these two alpine lakes to your French Alps itinerary? 💙🥾 #LacDesCerces #LacRond #ColDuGalibier #Galibier #FrenchAlps #HikingFrance #Alps #MountainHiking #Savoie #HautesAlpes #FranceTravel #NatureLovers #HikingAdventure #Tripcom

Who would have thought!! As I strolled through the cobblestone streets, watching the clear Thiou River flow through the town, with warm yellow and coral pink wooden houses reflecting on the water, and the distant Alps seamlessly meeting the deep blue Lake Annecy—at that moment, I realized that "France" is never just the bustle of Paris. It’s the millennia-old encounter between Annecy and the Alps, the ultimate dialogue between the gentle charm of the water town and the grandeur of the mountains. Here, canals, flowers, cheese, and snowy peaks intertwine, and even the air carries the healing essence of the French countryside. The stories hidden in the colorful wooden houses and the lake and mountain scenery feel more vivid than any filter and more touching than any travel guide. Colorful water alleys: Monet’s spilled French palette Known as "Annecy’s most stunning visual wonder," this old town, called the "Little Venice of France," looks like a flowing fairy tale. The 13th-century painted houses line the water, with half-closed shutters and windowsills full of blooming roses and greenery. The Thiou River flows through the town like a soft ribbon, with stone bridges, arcades, and babbling water creating a charming scene. At 6 AM, when the first sunlight hits the river, the reflections in the water alleys are so dreamy they leave you speechless. Walking on the gravel streets, you feel like you’ve stepped into a Monet painting, your heartbeat syncing with the canal’s flow. Every photo perfectly blends romance and healing. Palais de l’Isle: the water jewel in the canal As "Annecy’s most iconic architectural landmark," the Palais de l’Isle stands in the middle of the canal, looking like "frozen time." This 12th-century triangular stone fortress once served as a medieval prison and courthouse and is now the town’s most recognizable postcard image. Its pointed roof reflects in the clear river like a sailboat about to set off. Standing on the Pont des Amours and looking back, this water jewel framed by the snowy mountains makes you feel like you’re at the entrance to a fairy tale world. Even your breath becomes cautious, afraid to disturb this centuries-old tranquility. Deep blue lake: the pure tear beneath the Alps As "Annecy’s most healing soul," Lake Annecy looks like "a sapphire dropped by God." Fed by Alpine snowmelt, its waters are crystal clear without a trace of impurity. Rent a transparent kayak or electric boat to drift in the lake’s center. The breeze stirs the reflections of snowy peaks and colorful wooden houses on the shimmering surface. At dusk, the sunset dyes the lake and houses golden red. Sitting on a lakeside bench, lost in thought, you feel completely cleansed by this purity and gain a deeper understanding of this land: the ultimate romance is the gentle bond between mountains and water. Cheese fondue: a French tipple for the palate As "Annecy’s most photogenic local flavor," the cheese fondue from the Savoie region looks like "melting warmth." Step into a traditional restaurant in the old town and watch the rich cheese bubbling in a copper pot. Use a long fork to dip crispy bread cubes into the stringy cheese, where the aroma of cheese and wheat bursts in your mouth. Pair it with a glass of local white wine while listening to church bells and street music intertwine. You’ll feel like you’ve understood the relaxed vibe of southern France, with time slowing down as if you could embrace this unique comfort with the town in the next moment. Suggested itinerary Classic route: stroll the old town streets > visit Palais de l’Isle and Pont des Amours > climb Annecy Castle for panoramic views (9:00 AM–1:00 PM, capture fairy-tale water alleys and panoramas) In-depth route: bike or boat on Lake Annecy > explore local markets for cheese and handmade desserts > relax at a lakeside café to watch the sunset (2:00 PM–7:00 PM, soak in the lake views and gentle buzz) Equipment Canon R6 with wide-angle/telephoto lenses (for water alley reflections and mountain panoramas) + phone (for cheese fondue and colorful wooden house details) BGM Light French chanson or accordion instrumentals (to match Annecy’s romance and relaxation) Tips Best time: May to September is Annecy’s peak beauty, with pleasant weather and blooming lakeside flowers. Strongly recommend visiting the canal before 6 AM to enjoy the dreamy reflections alone. The castle viewpoint at dusk is perfect for sunset photos. Transportation: About 3.5 hours direct by TGV from Paris; from Geneva Airport, a 40-minute intercity bus ride makes it very convenient. Outfit suggestions: wear light-colored dresses or vintage French-style coats (white, light blue, or pale yellow) to perfectly match the colorful wooden houses and deep blue lake. Comfortable flat shoes are a must, as the old town is paved with cobblestones, ideal for slow wandering. Safety details: Lake Annecy’s water is cold, so even in summer, be mindful of warmth when swimming. Mountain weather changes quickly, so bring a light jacket and rain gear even on sunny days. Avoid pitfalls: The old town streets are flat but narrow, and crowded in peak season, so consider off-peak visits. Some traditional restaurants offer discounts for cash payments, so have euros ready. Do not step on flowers on local residents’ windowsills—respect local life. Extended experiences: Visit the town’s open-air market early to find fresh alpine honey, handmade crepes, and lavender crafts. Learn about Savoie cheese making and sample it at a cheese workshop. Rent a bike on weekends to ride the 42 km lakeside greenway and experience the natural beauty of the Alps.

Chamonix sits at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the French Alps. It was the host of the first Winter Olympics and is the birthplace of mountaineering and skiing. For glacier or difficult hikes, hiring a certified guide (UIAGM/IFMGA) is mandatory. 🥘 What to eat When in the Savoie region, be sure to try authentic cheese fondue, raclette, and potato gratin tartiflette.

Hi everyone! Being from Marseille, I’m more used to the sea, but I wanted to check out the mountains and heritage around Annecy for a quick getaway. It’s true that the scenery, with the lake and the Alps in the background, is breathtaking, but you need a bit of a strategy to avoid disappointment. Regarding history (which was my main interest), the medieval old town is full of character with its canals. The Palais de l'Isle—that old prison sitting right in the middle of the water—is visually stunning. To be honest, there's no point in paying for museum admission; the view from the docks across from it does the trick and it’s free. As for the Château d’Annecy on the hill, the climb is a bit steep, but the panoramic view of the red rooftops and the lake is worth the effort. Just a heads-up: the castle and the Palais de l'Isle are closed on Tuesdays, so don't let that ruin your plans. The lake is gorgeous, and the water is incredibly clear. I rented a bike to ride part of the loop; the bike path is well-designed and flat, which is a plus. On the other hand, the famous "Pont des Amours" is a bit overrated—it’s just a metal footbridge packed with people blocking the way to take photos. When it comes to food, you have to be careful. The touristy restaurants along the canals charge insane prices for mediocre quality. If you want a real Savoyard fondue or fresh lake fish, steer clear of the crowded terraces on the main drags and head into the back alleys of the old town to find more local spots. Overall, it’s a beautiful historical and geological destination, but I’d recommend visiting early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Also, bring a sweater because the breeze off the lake stays cool, even in the summer.

#footballfanculture Annecy is a postcard, and watching football here is a serene pleasure. My night was spent on the Quai Vieille Maison, right on the Thiou Canal. The water was crystal clear, reflecting the pastel buildings and the illuminated castle. I found a table at a bar on Rue Filaterie, where the only noise was the gentle flow of the water. We drank crisp Savoie white wine, light and refreshing. The crowd was a mix of lake dwellers, paragliders, and tourists. The atmosphere was relaxed and happy. There was no aggression, only appreciation for the beautiful game and the beautiful setting. It’s a gentle, lakeside fan culture, perfect for those who prefer a peaceful cheer. The Plan: Walk around the lake first. Then find a waterside terrace. Order a tartifletteand a glass of Apremont. Enjoy the view.

Dreaming of snowy peaks and luxury après-ski? Here’s my Courchevel adventure in the heart of the French Alps ❄️⛷️ This legendary resort, made up of four altitude-linked villages (from 4,250 ft up to the glitzy Courchevel 1850), is THE place for winter sports, upscale dining, family fun, and breathtaking scenery. Pro tip: Get an early start to avoid lines! Point d’Accueil Courchevel 1850 (Batiment la Croisette, 09:00–12:00, 13:00–17:00 Mon–Fri): Swing by for insider info, maps, and local event details — super useful for first-timers. La Table des Airelles (Rue du Jardin Alpin): Don’t leave without a luxe lunch or a decadent dessert here. The mountain views are just as swoon-worthy as the French cuisine! Les Suites de la Potinière (Rue de Plantret): Stay right in the middle of the action. The hotel’s spa and restaurant are pure bliss after a chilly day, and the location is unbeatable for ski access. Friendly staff, but if you’re a light sleeper bring earplugs because nightlife can get lively. Getting Around: Ski lifts and resort shuttles make village-hopping a breeze. Taxis are plentiful, but plan on walking in 1850 (everything’s close). Eat/Drink: Indulge in raclette and fondue in cozy cafés, or splurge at one of the fancy restaurants in 1850. Family Tip: Courchevel is super kid-friendly with ski schools and gentle slopes in every village! #Courchevel #FrenchAlps #SkiTrip #FamilyTravel #SnowAdventure

Today, I drove from downtown Grenoble to Château de Vizille. The trip took about twenty minutes, and parking was available and easy to find. The weather was cloudy, with a biting cold wind blowing by the lake—I honestly regretted not bringing a heavier jacket with me. The place features an old castle surrounded by expansive gardens and a swan-filled lake, along with a quietly turning, old wooden waterwheel. As a photographer, the angle of the castle's reflection on the water really caught my eye. I snapped a few shots there, but the wind was rippling the water and slightly ruining the reflection. I went into the museum inside the castle; all the walking and the endless stairs were tiring, but the historical exhibits were great. After finishing the tour, I headed to the nearby village for lunch—I absolutely had to try their local food. I popped into a small restaurant and ordered a Savoyard-style dish of potatoes and baked goods topped with melted cheese and local meats. The meal was rich and heavy, but it tasted amazing and was incredibly warming in this cold weather. Overall, it was a very peaceful day with light crowds since I visited midweek. Now, I'm heading back to the hotel to rest and sort through my photos.
