Guangzhou used to be called “Canton” by the British back when it was the center of the global tea trade in the 1700s, so this whole neighborhood has centuries of history behind it. First stop was China Tea Pu’er (since 1938), where I met up with the sweetest lady I’d already met a few years ago. She did a full tea ceremony for us and let us try several different teas, explaining everything along the way, the temperature, the steeping, the story behind each one. So much to see, so much learn, so much to do… Very interesting fair and worth seeing every year

Five of us friends stayed in Nampo. We were planning to go to a famous samgyeopsal restaurant near Kwantong Market. However, when we asked a local Instagrammer, they said, "A restaurant that used to be in Yeongdo has just opened in this area, so if you're looking for good value, you should definitely check it out." We trusted their advice and went. It's open almost 24 hours. They have a salad bar and it's incredibly cheap and delicious. For five of us, it was about 12,000 won per person. Thinly sliced ​​samgyeopsal is available in portions for 5 people (3,900 won per person). The restaurant is clean. The toilet was a bit rough because it used to be a different restaurant.

BBQ pigeon (烧乳鸽) is another Cantonese must-try dish. The bird itself hardly has much meat, but that is not the point. The magic lies in the perfectly roasted skin — incredibly crispy on the outside while locking in all the juices beneath. One bite and you immediately understand why it is such a celebrated delicacy in Guangzhou. The local fish cake is also a class above many others. Made with fresh fish meat, it has an impressive springy texture and natural sweetness that showcases the Cantonese obsession with freshness and technique. Guangzhou is really a place where the food feels surprisingly familiar to Malaysians. Perhaps it is because many of us grew up watching TVB dramas, seeing these dishes on screen long before we ever tasted them.
