We cruised through the Three Gorges and found them beautiful and fascinating to see. Our trip included a small boat excursion up a side channel, which was quite lovely. The scenery reminded me somewhat of the Milford Sound, with the mountains plunging directly into the river. The water level was raised about 170 meters by the dam project, displacing 1.3 million residents. Three Lesser Gorges From the boat we transferred to a ferry and then when the gorges became smaller as we headed up stream we switched to a sampan. There is little doubt that some of the attractions along the sampan tour are staged but that doesn't mean they are bad and the scenery is pretty special. The cliff burial caves are also interesting

No filter needed for photos. 📍 From the prefecture capital Maqin County, a round-trip car ride takes about three hours. The road conditions are average, so bring motion sickness medicine if needed. The altitude is nearly 4,000 meters, so it’s normal to get short of breath after a few steps. Don’t push yourself—take it slow. ⚠️ Sunscreen and sunglasses are a must. The high-altitude UV rays are no joke. 02 Taizhou | Zhejiang Taizhou offers two different vibes in one day. Spend the morning at Tiantai Mountain and the afternoon at Shenxianju. The stone beam waterfall at Tiantai Mountain is hidden in the shade, with mist in the air, making it feel five or six degrees cooler than the city. The plank road at Shenxianju hangs on the cliffside. If you have elders, skip the water curtain cave and just enjoy the view from the observation deck. The Qingjiang Gallery boat ticket includes round-trip and lasts three hours. Lines at the site can be frustratingly long. 08 Kashgar Prefecture | Xinjiang August in Kashgar is dry heat, cool in the mornings and evenings, hot at noon. You can’t see all of Kashgar Old Town in one day. ⏰ Start at 9 AM with the century-old teahouse to watch locals drink tea and eat naan. After 10 AM, the handicraft shops in the alleys open one by one, selling copperware, wood carvings, and pottery that will keep you glued. The Stone City on the Pamir Plateau is in Tashkurgan County, at 3,100 meters altitude. The roads are good but winding, so bring motion sickness medicine. 📍 The “artisan street” in the old town is full of life, with tailor and blacksmith shops side by side. Don’t get too close when taking photos—ask first. ⚠️ A border pass is required for the Pamir Plateau. Get it in Kashgar city before you go. It’s free but don’t forget. It’s so quiet you can hear your own footsteps. Nanhu and Kailuan offer a different vibe. Don’t rush to leave the park—head toward Kailuan National Mining Park. No boats run after 1 PM, so start early. 05 Xinzhou | Shanxi Xinzhou’s charm is that you can feel the clang of battle at Yanmen Pass in the morning and watch the Yellow River’s gentle bend at Laoniuwan in the afternoon. The wind at Yanmen Pass is strong enough to make you squint, but standing on the gate tower with mountains on both sides, you understand what “one man guards the pass” means. Laoniuwan is a completely different scene. The Yellow River is calm like a mirror, with smoke curling from cave dwellings on the opposite bank. I advise against driving into Wutai Mountain—it’s so congested you’ll lose your mind. Park outside and take the shuttle bus to Taihuai Town. The 1,080 steps to Dailuo Peak took me 40 minutes to climb. The lake appears on your left, the wind blows from the right, and you’re surrounded by blue. ⏰ Two hours after sunrise, the lake is calm and you can see swans. Anjihai Grand Canyon is the opposite extreme. Standing at the cliff edge, the water below twists like a silver snake. The reddish-brown rock walls layer on layer. If you’re afraid of heights, step back two paces. The hot springs county is better for a slow, relaxing trip. Soak in a hot spring and look up at a sky full of stars at night. ⚠️ Sayram Lake is windy. No matter how hot it is in summer, bring a windbreaker. 07 Ningde | Fujian Taimu Mountain is the most “unreasonable” mountain I’ve seen. The rocks are stacked like building blocks. You squeeze through narrow cracks and have to hold your breath sideways. The fog at the summit comes and goes in seconds, wrapping you in white then revealing the distant sea. Baishuiyang is even more amazing. The whole stream flows over flat stone slabs, the water just covering your ankles. In summer, stepping in sends coolness from your feet to your head. ⚠️ Bring slip-resistant water shoes for Baishuiyang. Walking barefoot on the stones is so slippery it’s unbelievable. At Beiqi mudflats in Xiapu, don’t follow the guidebook to the viewing platform. Walk along the village toward the sea until the path ends. The mudflat patterns there are more beautiful than any photo spot. ⏰ At 5:30 PM, the tide is at its lowest and the mudflat textures look like the palm lines of the earth. 08 Yichang | Hubei The Yangtze Three Gorges in Yichang are the most dramatic.
