The first question that arises when planning a trip to China on my own is: "How many days should I allocate for Beijing/Shanghai/Guilin, etc." There's no definitive answer here—it depends on your pace, interests, and time budget. On average, I usually allocate at least four full days per city at an intensive pace to ensure I don't miss anything. 🔴Beijing, 5 days Must-see: The Wall, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen, and the Summer Palace—each site is so large that it literally takes a full day. Getting around the city eats up a lot of time. I would recommend no more than two attractions per day. The city literally changes year after year, with new locations appearing. But for a first introductory trip, 4 days is enough. 🔴Guilin, 5 days Make sure to visit the Longji Rice Terraces, rafting on the Lijiang River, and atmospheric Yangshuo. This place is more about the atmosphere. It's good to set aside time for hotels with mountain views and leisurely walks along the river. 🔴Zhangjiajie, 4 days Must see: The mountains that inspired Avatar, the glass bridge over the canyon, Tianmen Mountain, and the neighboring towns of Furong and Fenghuang. All the spots are far from each other, so allow a day for each. 🔴Hong Kong, 4 days Victoria Peak, the waterfront with a view of the skyline, Lantau Island with its Buddha, and Disneyland. Essentially, these are three different cities in one—the island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. 🔴Chongqing, 3 days Hongyadong by night, the retro district with the stunning 1949 Theater, and the Wulong karsts outside the city. For first-time visitors with limited time, its accessibility makes it an easy addition to a Chengdu itinerary. The downside? Its popularity means it can feel busy, especially around the most famous panda enclosures. For a different experience, consider Dujiangyan. The panda facilities around Dujiangyan are further from central Chengdu and require more time to reach, but the surrounding landscape is greener and more relaxed. You can also combine the visit with Dujiangyan’s famous irrigation system, turning the panda trip into a full-day excursion rather than simply a morning visit. It suits travellers who want to see pandas while exploring somewhere beyond Chengdu itself. Then there is Wolong, located in the mountains northwest of Chengdu. This is a much more nature-oriented experience and is particularly interesting for travellers who want to understand panda conservation beyond the typical tourist visit. The journey takes longer, however, so it makes less sense if you only have a short stay in Chengdu. Think of Wolong as a destination in its own right rather than a quick panda stop. So, which one would you choose? The Chengdu base is about convenience and seeing lots of pandas, Dujiangyan is about combining pandas with a day trip, while Wolong offers a more remote mountain and conservation experience. If you're looking for a taste of beautiful, modern China in Chengdu, this is the place for you. Taikoo Li (成都远洋太古里) is a huge district in the heart of the city, but it's nothing like a typical shopping mall. There's no single, gigantic building here: shops, restaurants, and cafes are nestled among low-rise buildings, courtyards, and pedestrian streets. This was conceived because the ancient Buddhist monastery, Da Chi (大慈寺), is literally located within all of this. You leave the quiet monastery courtyard, and within minutes you're surrounded by Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Apple, and dozens of Chinese brands. A very strange combination. And very Chengdu. Why go to Taikoo Li even if you don't plan to buy anything? It's simply pleasant to stroll here: beautiful architecture, tons of shops, coffee shops, and restaurants, everything is illuminated in the evening, and the surrounding area is constantly bustling with life. And another super-important stop for those who've been traveling in China for a while and can't stand Chinese food anymore 😅 In the TaikuLi area, on the ground floor, there's a large supermarket with imported and familiar European groceries. You can buy pizza, baked goods, sausage rolls, cheese, dairy products, ready-made food, and much more there, which suddenly seems incredibly delicious after a few days of Chinese cuisine. So, I'd include TaikuLi in your itinerary for at least a few hours: to walk around, eat, browse the shops, stop by Dachi Monastery, and simply experience a completely different Chengdu. If you want to avoid the hassle, you can fly directly to Daocheng Yading Airport, then transfer to Shangri-La Town. ⚠️ The airport is at a very high altitude, so move slowly upon arrival to prevent altitude sickness. You can also choose to carpool or charter a car for more flexibility. You must take the sightseeing bus inside the scenic area. Song Sichuan Cuisine, Taikoo Li Chengdu This restaurant is one of my favorite spots in Chengdu's Taikoo Li area because the atmosphere is quite premium, yet you still get to enjoy authentic Sichuan cuisine. The shop is located in Building 23 of Taikoo Li on Zhongshamao Road, making it very easy to grab a bite and keep exploring. For the atmosphere shown in the photos, I prefer the evening—the lighting is beautiful and it’s perfect for a post-dinner stroll through Taikoo Li. I've been to too many "ancient towns"—where the bluestone streets are lined with fried skewers and stinky tofu, Yiwu trinkets hang from every eave, and bar speakers blast music at deafening volumes. Until I went to Yuantong. It's a one-hour drive from Chengdu, tucked into Chongzhou. The ancient town has no admission fee and no blaring speakers from trendy shops. With over 1,600 years of history and surrounded by water on three sides, it's known as a "living Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival in Western Sichuan." Qilin Street is the main thoroughfare, where the bluestone road has been polished until it shines, flanked by old wooden houses from the late Qing and early Republic eras. The light and shadows in the courtyard of the Huang Family Mansion are beautiful, and the carved wooden windows are exquisite. The entrance to the Luo Family Mansion is inscribed with "Shi Yi Dong Tian" (A Cave Heaven) and sits right next to the river. Huijiang Bridge is the first iron suspension bridge in Western Sichuan; standing in the middle of the bridge to watch the confluence of the three rivers, you can feel the wind blowing against your face. Find a teahouse by the river, sit down for a cup of covered-bowl tea for 10 yuan, lean back in a bamboo chair, listen to the river, and watch the locals chat. In the old teahouse nearby, there's a master playing the erhu—even when he hits a wrong note, it sounds pleasant. What to eat Yuantong's yellow tofu pudding is tender and savory, the peppercorn-spiced local pressed duck is rich and numbing, and the leaf-wrapped rice cakes (ye'erba) are filled with preserved vegetables and meat—steamed fresh, with thin skin and generous filling. A joint ticket for five core historic residences, including the Huang Family Mansion and the Luo Family Mansion, costs 40 yuan and is valid for two days. You don't need a ticket if you're just strolling the old streets. The stone steps by the river can be slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. Moss grows in the cracks of the bluestone, and the scent of home-cooked meals wafts through the gaps in the doors of the old houses—it's not a performance for tourists.

It feels much more like a lived-in space than a standard hotel room. 🛏️ My room featured a large bed, a cozy window-side sitting area with a signature orange chair, and a projector mounted above the bed. After a long day of sightseeing, there's nothing better than winding down with a movie. The other side of the room functions just like an apartment. You’ll find a counter, a refrigerator, and a washing machine—a total game-changer if you’re traveling through China for an extended period and need to do some laundry. 🧺 The bathroom is simple and compact, with a glass-enclosed shower. It’s not "luxury hotel" style; the charm here lies in the practicality and the ease of city living. 📌 Things to check before you book: There are various room types, and the layout or amenities (like the projector or washing machine) can vary. I highly recommend checking the specific room details rather than just looking at general hotel photos to ensure you get exactly what you need. #bucketlistdestinations 🐼 If Chengdu is on your China bucket list, save this panda stop too 🇨🇳 Xuankehui Panda Bookstore (熊猫书店) is one of those places that fits naturally into a Chengdu city day, especially if you’re already exploring around Chunxi Road. It’s a panda-themed bookstore and café within walking distance of Chunxi Road Metro Station, with plenty of little panda things to browse through. Books, plushies, keychains, magnets, postcards, notebooks, tote bags, stickers and all the usual souvenirs. We thought we’d have a quick look and ended up spending much longer browsing. There are also a few panda-themed photo corners around the bookstore, so it’s an easy place to stop for a few photos without needing to plan a separate attraction around it. We tried: ☕ Panda Coffee Basically a latte with a little panda figure on top. More of a cute Chengdu souvenir-in-a-cup moment than a coffee you need to travel across the city for. 🍰 Panda Cheesecake Creamy cheesecake with berry filling in the middle of the panda-shaped cake. Light enough that we finished it easily. One useful tip if you’re visiting: check Dianping before ordering. They often have set deals for the coffee and cake, so the combo can work out cheaper than ordering them separately. The café has quite a bit of seating too, including outdoor space, which makes it a nice place to slow down for a while after walking around the city. And since it’s close to Chunxi Road, you can easily combine it with a city walk instead of making a separate trip just for the bookstore. Wander the surrounding streets, pop into the smaller cafés and indie shops, then continue towards the busier shopping areas. For us, this is exactly the kind of smaller stop worth saving when building a Chengdu bucket list.
