I find the question compelling because the two experiences offer such different rewards. The metropolis appeals to me for its energy: neighborhoods that reveal themselves on foot, authentic local cuisine, and the rhythm of everyday urban life. Natural landscapes, by contrast, offer something altogether different, with turquoise lakes, colorful forests, and mountain vistas that appear almost unreal. There, one is invited to slow down and absorb the surroundings rather than move from one attraction to the next. One thing I really enjoy about travelling in China is discovering how convenient it can be to travel between cities. This time, our journey started at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, but we weren’t going to stay in Chengdu. Our next destination was Chongqing! After landing, we went through all the necessary airport checks and then headed straight to Tianfujichang Railway Station (天府机场站). I really liked that we could get there directly from inside the airport without going outside with our luggage. When you have just arrived after a flight, not having to figure out another transfer is a big advantage. We had around three hours before departure, which gave us time to take a break and get ready for the next part of our trip. The railway station itself is quite small compared with some of the huge stations in China, but I found it easy to understand. The layout was straightforward, and we didn’t feel lost trying to find our way around. Then it was time to board our high-speed train to Chongqing. We chose first class, and I was happy with that decision. The seats are super comfortable, and they even serve tea on board. After a flight and all the airport procedures, being able to sit back, relax and enjoy a cup of tea felt especially nice. But the speed of these trains still amazes me! 😂 The train moves so fast that my ears even started to feel blocked. It is quite an experience when you look outside and realise how quickly the scenery is passing by. The journey from Chengdu to Chongqing takes only about two hours on our train. I love that we can cover this distance so quickly and still enjoy a comfortable journey along the way. For me, travelling is not only about reaching the destination. I also enjoy the little moments in between, and this train ride is definitely one of them. Now we are on our way to Chongqing, and I am happy to experience China’s high-speed railway again. Had a wonderful stay at Pagoda Taikoo Li Hotel during our family trip to Chengdu ✨ The location is very convenient — just a short walk to Taikoo Li and the Chunxi Road area, making it easy for shopping and food hunting. The hotel environment was also really nice and comfortable. Check-in and check-out were both fast and seamless. The staff throughout the stay were friendly, polite and very responsive. Whenever we needed anything, we could simply contact them through WeChat and they replied very quickly, which made the whole experience super convenient. The room was spacious, clean and nicely designed. I also liked some of the room details and amenities — the hair dryer provided was from Laifen, and there was a LED light mirror which was super useful for makeup and getting ready~ Housekeeping was done daily, and the housekeeping auntie was very polite and friendly too. They consistently topped up all the essential items every day, so the stay felt very comfortable. One thing that really impressed me was the hotel amenities. Besides the free minibar, they also provide complimentary facial sheet masks daily — and the masks were actually GOOD quality with a lot of serum, not the dry kind 😂 They even top up 2 every day, which honestly felt quite generous. The hotel also provides breakfast, afternoon tea and supper, which was convenient to have included during the stay, although the food itself was more average than amazing. One small detail that made the service stand out: when I checked out, I intentionally left my contact lens case in the bathroom since I didn’t plan to bring it back. Surprisingly, the staff still WeChatted me afterwards to inform me that I had left it behind and asked if I wanted them to keep it for me. Really appreciated how attentive and thoughtful they were. Hi, everyone! Guys, if you had to choose between the vibrant city of Chengdu and the breathtaking wilderness of Jiuzhaigou, which one would win your heart? For me, it is Jiuzhaigou, without a second of hesitation! Well, actually, Chengdu really has so much to offer, from adorable giant pandas and famous Sichuan cuisine to bustling streets, teahouses, shopping districts, and rich cultural heritage. It is a fantastic destination for anyone who loves urban adventures. But sometimes I want something completely different. I want to escape the noise, slow down, breathe in the mountain air, and lose myself in landscapes so extraordinary that photographs barely capture them. Jiuzhaigou National Park in Sichuan looks almost unreal. Imagine crystal-clear turquoise lakes, spectacular waterfalls, lush forests, and majestic mountains, all in one place. The water can glow emerald green, brilliant blue, or turquoise depending on the lake, the light, and the surrounding landscape. It is the kind of scenery that makes you stop, stare, and wonder whether you are still in the real world. Chengdu wins if your priorities are city life, shopping, local food, and pandas. But I would rather wander beautiful landscapes, listen to the roar of waterfalls, and feel the peaceful side of Sichuan. That is the magic of a nature escape: the destination is not just somewhere you visit, it is somewhere you feel. For photography lovers, Jiuzhaigou is an absolute dream. Reflections on the lakes, colourful forests, wooden walkways, and dramatic mountain backdrops create endless unforgettable shots. The scenery changes with the seasons, too. Autumn is famous for vibrant foliage, winter can turn the landscape into a snowy wonderland, and spring and summer have their own charms, although conditions and colours vary through the year. Sometimes the best holidays are not about visiting as many attractions as possible. They are about moments that make you pause and appreciate the world around you. Next, If you are planning a trip, here are a few tips. Consider autumn, when late September through October is popular for foliage, though conditions vary each year. If you prefer snow, check winter access and weather first. Plan your transport carefully: you can take a high-speed train from Chengdu to Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station, about 1 hour 40 minutes, but the onward road transfer takes roughly another 2 to 3 hours, so do not mistake the train ride for the whole journey. Allow at least three calendar days from Chengdu, one to travel there, one full day in the park, and one to return. Book ahead, especially in peak autumn and during Chinese public holidays, by checking official ticketing, train schedules, and connecting transport. Prepare for mountain weather and altitude with layers, comfortable shoes, and rain protection, take it easy, stay hydrated, and seek medical advice if altitude worries you. ❄️🏔️ The views here are absolutely worth it. If you're planning a trip to Chengdu during winter, I highly recommend stepping outside the city to visit Bipenggou at least once. It’s one of the most magnificent snow mountain destinations in Sichuan. We were so lucky on this trip because it was snowing right when we arrived. ❄️ Everything was blanketed in white—the mountains, the trees, and the paths. The fog drifting over the peaks made the scenery look even more ethereal. Even though we didn't get the clear blue sky you usually see in reviews, we got a stunning "Winter Wonderland" vibe instead. 🤍 📍 Where is Bipenggou? Bipenggou is located in Li County, Sichuan, about 200 kilometers from Chengdu. The journey takes around 3.5–4.5 hours, depending on road and weather conditions. 🏔️ Winter Highlights 🌨️ Massive snow-capped mountains visible all along the route. 🌲 Pine forests and trees covered in thick snow. 🏞️ Lakes and streams nestled in the middle of the valley. 📸 Countless photo opportunities, especially on snowy days. Personally, I love the vibe here because, despite being a vast natural attraction, there are shuttle buses within the park. This makes it easy to explore without needing to do any long-distance hiking. 🚗 Getting There from Chengdu You can choose to rent a car with a driver, book a one-day tour, or take a scheduled bus. If you have the time, I recommend setting aside at least one full day because of the distance. It’s best to start your journey early in the morning. 💡 Tips for a Snowy Visit · Prepare heavy winter gear, including gloves and a hat. · Wear waterproof shoes with good grip, as the paths can be slippery. · Bring sunglasses because the reflection from the snow is quite strong. · Check the weather forecast before you go; heavy snow can affect travel and park access. · Some areas are above 3,000 meters in altitude. Walk slowly and watch for signs of altitude sickness. 🤍 Final Thoughts For me, Bipenggou is a must-visit for mountain and nature enthusiasts, especially in winter. Sometimes, visiting when the weather isn't "perfect" allows you to see beauty from a completely different perspective. Chengdu has a vibrant bicycle and e-scooter culture, and thanks to the flat terrain (unlike Chongqing, where we didn't get to ride bikes) and the vast network of bike paths (especially along rivers and parks), getting around the city is incredibly comfortable! 🚴♀️ ❤️ Save this custom itinerary for 1 day: from ancient teahouses to contemporary art! 1️⃣ Morning: Tea and Historic Streets The best time to start is 8:30–9:00 AM, before the streets are crowded with tourists. 🌼 Wenshu Monastery (文殊院) Start your morning here. It's the largest and best-preserved Buddhist monastery in Chengdu! Rent a bike (the city is now full of shared bikes like Meituan, HelloBike, or Didi) and leave it in the parking lot at the entrance. 🌸 Stroll through the quiet courtyards, permeated with the scent of incense, and then be sure to stop by a traditional monastery teahouse for a cup of local tea (like jasmine) surrounded by colorful locals playing mahjong. 🀄️ 🌼 Historic Jinli Street (锦里) or Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子) 🌸 Hop on your bike and head towards Kuanzhai. Here you can not only drink tea, but also try a traditional ear massage right at the table, and also observe the dating market, where parents look for partners for their adult children. 🌼 Bike ride along the Fuhe River / riverbanks Embankments 🌸 From the park, head out onto the landscaped embankments along the Fuhe or Jinjiang Rivers. Chengdu has a whole system of green eco-corridors (Greenways), where cars don't interfere with cyclists. Believe me, this is the perfect section of the route for simply pedaling, enjoying the greenery and city views! 🌼 Taikoo Li Creative Cluster & Daci Temple (IFS & Taikoo Li) 🌸 Compare the contrasts! You'll find yourself in Chengdu's ultra-modern, trendy district with futuristic architecture. ❗️Secret photo spot: a giant panda climbs right up the wall on the roof of the IFS Shopping Center (take a photo from below). Right in the middle of this glittering neighborhood stands the ancient Daci Temple, creating an incredible contrast between centuries-old tranquility and bustling modern life. You can also have lunch in one of the cool cafes here. 3️⃣ Evening: Sunset panorama and Sichuan flavor. 🌼 Taohuaxi Park or Junjiang Park / Anshun Bridge Embankment 🌸 What to do: In the evening, head to the Jinjiang River near the Anshun Bridge (known as the "Marco Polo Bridge"). The historic arched bridge with a beautiful traditional pavilion in the middle is illuminated by hundreds of lights in the evening. 🍜 There are tons of bars and restaurants with outdoor terraces nearby. Return your shared bike (it can be parked in any authorized geofence) and treat yourself to a farewell dinner: try the famous Sichuan hotpot or spicy chuanchuan skewers to end the day on a bright note. 💡 Helpful tips for cycling in Chengdu: Renting: easier The best way to do this is to use Chinese mini-apps in WeChat or Alipay (Meituan, HelloBike). The Yifei Hotel, located in Chunxi Road, Wenshu Fang, Chengdu, is conveniently situated in the heart of Chengdu's commercial district. The room's style is similar to other Yifei hotels, featuring a familiar orange color scheme that creates a warm atmosphere. The room layout is particularly noteworthy: anyone with roommates will appreciate it. The separate wet and dry areas are crucial, and the sink and mirror are conveniently located in the shared area, making it easy for everyone to use. Regarding the hotel's quietness, I stayed on a higher floor, with children staying nearby, and the area below was a major transportation route. However, I didn't hear any noise in my room, so I found it quite peaceful. The hotel staff were excellent. One short-haired lady was exceptionally helpful, but unfortunately, she didn't have a name, otherwise I would have wanted to give her a shout-out! This hotel also has a unique feature: cat lovers shouldn't miss it, as they have a playful milk cat! To get there directly, you can navigate to "MOFOND" cafe. . 🌃Tower of Vitality Rumored to be "the straightest place in Chengdu," though I'm not sure why people say that. It definitely looks great in photos when lit up at night, giving off sci-fi vibes! It's great for portraits and city nightscapes. However, it gets quite crowded under the pillars, especially on weekends. It also sprays water mist from time to time, so you might get wet—bringing a nice-looking umbrella for photos is a good idea. Right next to it is the SKP mall, which is worth a stroll. . 🎑Tiexiang Temple Water Street It feels a bit quiet lately; it was very lively when I went during an event before. It has that Jiangnan water town vibe, which is perfect for traditional-style photos, but it also has some modern art areas. There's a giant West Highland Terrier statue at the entrance now, which is super cute. There are also some small stalls at night, so it's worth a visit if you're passing by and have time. A city we didn't have high expectations for, but turned out to be one of our favorite cities on our Sichuan trip! ❤️ We continued our journey from Four Girls by minivan. 🚐 The fare was 120 yuan (~550 baht). The journey took approximately 4 hours. The minivan dropped us off near the city entrance, then we took a Didi taxi to our hotel. 🚖 The taxi fare was 16 yuan (~74 baht). 🏨 Hotel: Center International Hotel 都江堰中心国际酒店 💰 Accommodation cost: 1,396 baht / 3 people Approximately 465 baht per person. The location was excellent, close to both the old town and the Nanqiao Bridge. Everything was within walking distance. 📍 Guanxian Ancient City 灌县古城 灌县古城 We stopped to stroll around the old town first. The quiet atmosphere at night was wonderful. Then we continued walking. 🌉 Nanqiao Bridge 南桥 南桥 This is a highlight of the city. At night, the lights are beautiful, and the atmosphere along the river is amazing ✨ 📸 If you're staying in this area, I recommend going for a walk in the evening because it's much more beautiful than during the day. 🍜 Dinner near the bridge. After a 10-hour overnight flight, we arrived in Chengdu with an eight-hour layover ahead of us. What made a huge difference was having a hotel room where we could properly sleep before our next flight. For our journey with Sichuan Airlines, we requested a transit hotel directly from the airline and received complimentary accommodation at the Tianfu International Hotel Complex. There were four of us travelling, and our family was given two rooms. Transfers between the airport and the hotel were included in both directions too. After spending the night on a plane, being able to lie down in a proper bed felt wonderful. We slept really well and had a chance to recover before continuing our journey. Those eight hours became a useful break in the middle of a long travel day. Having two rooms was particularly welcome for a family of four: everyone had somewhere comfortable to rest. The complimentary return transfer also made the hotel stay convenient, with transport back to the airport already taken care of. I’ve included photos of the hotel so you can see the accommodation we received. Before this trip, an eight-hour connection would have sounded like a lot of waiting. With a hotel stay included, we experienced it very differently — especially after such a long overnight flight. This was provided for our particular booking after we contacted the airline. If you’re considering a similar connection, check with Sichuan Airlines whether your itinerary qualifies and how to request the accommodation.
