Burana Tower is an ancient brick tower over 1,000 years old, located near the city of Tokmok in Kyrgyzstan. It was once part of the ancient city of Balasagun, a major hub along the Silk Road. 🌍 First Impressions Unlike all the natural attractions we've seen so far, this place gives off a vibe of "history + isolation." The tower stands right in the middle of an open field with not much around it, yet you can truly feel its magnificent past. 📍 Highlights 🏯 1. Burana Tower About 25 meters tall (it used to be taller), built in the 11th century as a minaret (a mosque tower used for the call to prayer). 👉 You can actually "climb to the top!" 🔭 2. The View from the Top You get sweeping views of the endless meadow with the Tian Shan mountains as a backdrop. Super windy + a great sense of freedom. 🪨 3. Finding Transportation: · While observing in the parking lot, we contacted a car and negotiated 3000 SOM (2800 SOM on Yandexgo) 💰 · Since it's hard to get a car at Burana, we decided to wait for 1 hour and then return to Bishkek, totaling 3000 SOM (2100 SOM on Yandexgo) 🕒 2. Actual Situation: Finally, we got a car through Yandexgo, directly to Burana Tower, no need to pay an extra 700 SOM 🎉 3. Journey: To Burana Tower is 99 km, the driver refueled midway, the whole trip took 2.5 hours, costing 2800 SOM ⛽ 4. Arrival Time: 4:00 PM 🌅 Burana Tower Guide: 1. Communicate with the Driver: Upon arrival, negotiate with the driver to wait for 1 hour and return to the city, the price is 2000 SOM 🗣 2. Toilet: Located behind the ticket booth, blue small house - dry toilet 🚽 One Day Trip Summary: Each person's cost is 2310 SOM, including tickets and transportation costs 🤑 Exclusive Advice · Transportation Arrangement: Recommend negotiating with the driver in advance for waiting time and return fare when heading to Burana Tower to avoid wasting time looking for a car 🚌 · Time Arrangement: Usually, 1 hour is enough to visit Burana Tower, refer to Yandexgo prices for costs 🕰 This was a fulfilling and beautiful trip, hope you can also enjoy the beauty of this nature! 🌿✨ Special Recommendation: Later, I met a very reliable guy who speaks Chinese, is super nice, and drives very steadily! 🚙💨 He provides one-day car rental services for Chinese people, driving a luxurious Lexus SUV, which is much more comfortable than Yandex's small cars. Short-distance car rental to places around Bishkek for about an hour, costs less than 900 RMB a day, a 7-seater car, which is about 150 RMB per person. A 7-day trip is just the right amount of time to hit the highlights like Bishkek, Burana Tower, Issyk-Kul Lake, Jety-Oguz, Karakol, and Skazka Canyon without feeling rushed. The best time to visit is from June to September. The weather is pleasant, all mountain roads are open, and you can even stay in a traditional yurt. If you want to see the stunning autumn foliage, late September to early October is highly recommended—the air gets chillier, but the views are absolutely gorgeous. Meanwhile, winter is perfect for those planning to ski or admire the snow-capped peaks. As for the budget, if you're an independent traveler staying in guesthouses or mid-range hotels and renting or sharing a car with friends, expect to spend around 25,000–40,000 THB per person (excluding flights). Food starts at just 150–400 THB per meal, and accommodation runs about 1,000–2,500 THB per night. Renting a car and splitting the gas is extremely cost-effective if you're traveling in a group of three or four. Be sure to pack a windbreaker, a raincoat, and comfortable walking shoes. It's also essential to carry some cash, as many places outside the major cities don't accept cards. Additionally, make sure to download offline maps in advance, as cell service can be spotty in certain areas. 1. Charter a car: We chose INDY GUIDE to find a driver to charter a car. Originally he suggested we cover nine days, the first and last two days to pick up the airport and play in the city, we thought it was not cost-effective, the first and last two days by taxi is very cheap. Finally chose US$1701, 10% deposit before departure (4 people 7 days charter), recommended five days is enough, if you do not go to Son kol lake two days and one night. (I will explain the reasons why I didn’t go to this place next). Basically the hotels recommended by the tour guide, you can compare yourself online, we found that they charge more commissions, and finally we booked our own homestay/hotel, choose some better equipment. The tour guide will also recommend you home stay at their home for a couple of nights, including breakfast and dinner, good to hear is a life experience, are making money. Finally we booked our own B&B and dinner out, a wise choice. 2. Phone cards and transportation: It is recommended to choose Beeline at the airport, the signal and scheme are more stable, the price is usually around $10, including call and Internet traffic, real name registration. Exchange a little local currency, take a taxi to the city, and only change the currency when you get to the city. 🚗 City transportation: It is recommended to use Yandex Go to take a taxi (transparent price), to give a Russian address to take a taxi. We choose to pay the fare in cash. 3. B&B, temperature and altitude: This 𥚃 is relatively backward, even in hotels and homestays, the service staff do not understand English, ask them everything says they do not know, they are so lazy to even use Google translate, are unwilling to help, the general public is like this, their general English level is very poor. Although some places reach altitudes of 3000, there is not much altitude sickness. In summer, the temperature difference between morning and evening is large, very dry, the air pollution is severe, 11 noon to 3 pm can go to 43 degrees, markets and restaurants will have flies. The toilets are not clean either. Many in the suburbs are dry toilets, so the tour guide we chartered for seven days mainly took us to the restroom at the gas station, which was very clean. 😎Bishkek to Burana tower (it was an important town on the ancient Silk Road, this tower is very narrow, only one person can get up and down) 🌴🌲🌳Chon Kemin valley (1400-2000 altitude), you can horse riding. Son kol lake (3016 elevation) stay at Yurt Camp, to ortotokoy water reservoir (1700 elevation) It is not recommended to go to the largest lake, Son Kol Lake (3016 altitude), because the spend is too long drive, round trip to at least 8 hours, to just encountered rain, temperature below 10 degrees plus strong wind, nothing to play, regret not bringing cards or UNO to play. The yurt equipment is also relatively primitive, fortunately we only stayed here for one night, so it is not recommended to go here. In addition, the Eagle hunting show can also be skipped (unless you want to help the performers and earn a little living expenses).

On top you get a 360° on the Kungey-Ala-Too; I hit a hail squall in late July and the temperature dropped from 18°C to 4°C in ten minutes — pack a puffy even in summer. Descent north is long grass slopes to the Jasy-Köl ("cool lake") basin at 2,200 m, a small alpine tarn ringed by jailoo meadows where a herder family runs a yurt camp (sleep ~800 KGS, dinner ~400 KGS, cash som only). They serve kymyz and fresh curds; don't refuse the kymyz shot unless you want to explain for ten minutes. No permit needed inside Chon-Kemin National Park for this route, but register at the park gate — they note your passport number, no fee. Mistake I made: I underestimated mosquito density at the lake and slept with the tent unzipped — bad night. Boots beat trail runners on the pass scree. Question: is a guided horseback crossing of Kalmak-Ashuu (as many tour operators sell) more authentic than walking, or does walking preserve the silence that makes the meadow special?

Friday 17:00 Beijing Capital - Bishkek I bought a ticket for the inaugural flight of Air China's new route, but there was absolutely no sense of ceremony on the ground or in the plane. The only difference was the water salute upon arrival. I applied for a Kyrgyz e-visa in advance; the process was smooth, and immigration was also easy. Saturday 09:00 Booked a day trip to Lake Issyk-Kul. First stop: Suyab/Burana Tower. The scenery was so-so; I could have skipped it entirely if it weren't for Li Bai's influence. 13:00 Hike through the Kok-Moinok Valley. Also just okay; a quick visit, and I ended up with shoes full of sand and gravel. 16:00 Arrived at the western shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. The water was an incredibly stunning blue, almost unreal in the sunlight. Kyrgyz people were diving, swimming, paddleboarding, jet skiing—all sorts of water sports were available. If it weren't for the distant view of the snow-capped Tian Shan Mountains, I would have thought I was in the Maldives. Unfortunately, the tour only stayed at the lake for an hour. I strongly recommend staying longer next time; it's definitely worth it! 8:00 PM Returned to Bishkek and went to the popular Navat restaurant. It was packed, even close to midnight. Sunday 10:00 AM Took a taxi to Ala-Archa National Park and chose to hike the middle valley route. The scenery was superb, similar to the alpine meadows of Xinjiang, also part of the Tian Shan Mountains. Hiking upstream along the melting snow, feeling the vastness of the landscape, was incredibly refreshing. The nickname "Little Switzerland of Central Asia" is well-deserved. A strong recommendation: don't wear flip-flops on this route, or you'll end up with bruises all over your hands and feet like me. 4:00 PM Returned to the city and headed to the Osh Grand Bazaar. It was a bit chaotic, possibly closing soon, but we could experience some local life. 6:00 PM Went for a city walk around Ala-Too Square and the surrounding area. We happened to catch the Changing of the Guard, and the fountain in front of the square was beautiful. Unfortunately, the temperature was over 40 degrees Celsius, so we only walked a couple of blocks before giving up and taking a taxi to the airport. I received news of my flight delay en route, so I'm completely out of luck watching the World Cup. Overall, my travel experience in Kyrgyzstan was quite good. Lake Issyk-Kul was incredibly popular, and I even think about doing a self-guided tour around it someday. Bishkek city was very safe, and the people were very friendly. Yandex was convenient for getting around, and the food was very similar to that of Xinjiang—very delicious. The tour guide even said I looked like I had Kyrgyz ancestry; maybe I really am a descendant of Li Bai (a famous Chinese poet)?

Burana Tower is one of the oldest architectural monuments in Central Asia, standing for more than 1,000 years. Located in the Chuy Valley, it was once part of the ancient city of Balasagun, a major stop along the Silk Road. The tower was originally built as a mosque minaret and watchtower. Although it once stood over 40 meters tall, earthquakes reduced its height to about 25 meters today. The site also features ancient stone monuments, archaeological remains, and a small museum. Want to climb to the top? The staircase is extremely narrow and steep. I decided not to—I’m a little claustrophobic! 😅

The three attractions of Burana Tower, Karakhanid Mausoleums, and Turkic Stone Figures are all part of the ancient city site of Balasagun. Located in the Chuy Valley, alongside the previous stop, Suyab City, they are all components of the Silk Roads: Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor World Heritage Site. Figures 1-4: Burana Tower, 10th-11th centuries, from the Karakhanid Dynasty (also known as Qarakhanid Dynasty) period. The original tower was 45 meters tall, but its top was damaged by a major earthquake in the 15th century, leaving it at its current height of 24.5 meters. It features an octagonal base and a cylindrical body, entirely constructed of red bricks. The tower body is adorned with layered Central Asian geometric openwork brick carvings, and the lower level has three Islamic arched niches, serving both as a minaret for a mosque and a military watchtower. Only the main above-ground structures of the ancient city of Balasagun remain. Balasagun was once the eastern capital of the Karakhanid Dynasty and a core commercial capital in Central Asia along the Silk Road. Figures 5-6: Turkic Stone Figures, remnants of Turkic and Sogdian nomadic civilizations from the 6th-10th centuries, anciently known as Balbal standing stones. According to ancient Turkic customs, after a noble deceased was buried, servants/prisoners of war were killed and carved into stone figures placed in front of the tomb, symbolizing the deceased's subjects during their lifetime. These are iconic relics of Turkic culture in the Central Asian steppes, with dozens of stone figures remaining at the site. Figure 7: Karakhanid Mausoleums. Only the outlines of the mausoleum foundations remain above ground. The original site contained two domed mazars (Islamic royal tombs), forming a Karakhanid royal burial complex. Figure 10: Tokmok (Токмок / Tokmok) city entrance landmark. Figures 11-17: Kyrgyzstan · Cholpon-Ata Open-Air Petroglyph Museum (North Shore of Issyk-Kul Lake). The entire park covers 40 hectares and is divided into 8 petroglyph clusters, with thousands of carved stones. Most of the petroglyphs face Issyk-Kul Lake (southward). The main period is from the 8th century BCE to the 1st century CE (Saka/Wusun-Scythian era), with some carvings dating back to the Late Bronze Age (1500 BCE). P11: Spiral patterns on megaliths + argali, deer herds, and small hunting figures are totemic carvings of Central Asian Scythian nomads. The argali was a sacred totem for the Scythians, and the spiral symbol represents mountain and sun worship.

From the Eastern bus station, take Mashtruka number 353. All the Mashtrukas and stands are clearly labelled with numbers and destinations. They also have the price displayed inside and at the station. 3. The journey to Tokmok takes approximately 1 hour. 4. When you arrive, negotiate a fair price with a local taxi to take you the 15 minutes to Burana Tower, where they will wait one hour for you. 5. Buy your ticket at the booth labelled kacca. The prices are not clearly stated just that "a fee is charged." 6. Enjoy the tower, the small museum, the petroglyphs, and more. 7. Return with your taxi to Tokmok. 8. Catch the mashtruka straight back to Bishkek or have a little explore of Tokmok itself. Top tip: There are toilets at both bus stations (Bishkek and Tokmok), and both are far superior to the toilets at Burana Tower. #falladventures #travel #familytravel The waterfall is located in the middle of the beautiful Kegety Gorge, 90 kms from Bishkek city. Height is about 15 meters, flow all year round. In winter is gets frozen partially. Good for a one-day trip and having a picnic by the waterfall. After visiting the waterfall, you may continue along the gorge toward the top pass, where great views open. I went with TUK to the Kegety Waterfall near Bishkek. It cost 400 som for the guide and the transport. It's an easy trek from the road to the waterfall. We had lunch at the bottom of the waterfall.
