The cliff is the east wall of the Valser valley—200 m of schist dropping to the meadow where Nardus and Festuca mix with Polytrichum moss in the cow-grazed hollows (this is active alp pasture, cows Jun–Sept). The lake is cobalt, the meadow smells of hay and thyme, and the moss line runs up the seep gully like a green vein. I ate breakfast on the west shore, watched a herd cross the far bench at 08:00. At midnight on 29 May, I checked MeteoSwiss before going to sleep. We were supposed to visit Jungfraujoch after moving to Grindelwald, but the forecast for the next day looked much better. So we decided to change our plan and go directly from Lucerne instead. Luckily, we already had the Swiss Travel Pass First Class. We just changed our train route and bought the discounted ticket needed for Jungfraujoch. The next morning, the weather was beautiful. That experience ended up being one of the reasons I liked having the pass. In Switzerland, especially when visiting the mountains, our itinerary sometimes depended on the weather. Why First Class? We travelled for 12 days with our three-year-old son and an elderly parent, with quite a lot of moving between cities. First Class was mainly for comfort. It was generally quieter and easier for us to sit together, which helped when we had luggage and a young child with us. For normal train journeys, we simply boarded and showed the QR code when tickets were checked. We didn’t have to buy individual tickets every time we moved to another city. We used the pass for: · Zurich → Lucerne · Lake Lucerne cruise · Mount Rigi · Lucerne → Grindelwald · Grindelwald → Zermatt · Glacier Express route · Chur → Zurich We also used the pass for discounts on some mountain journeys, including Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat and Grindelwald First. For Glacier Express, we still had to book the seat reservation separately. One thing to take note First Class can sometimes be at the far end of the train. We learnt this during the trip because when the connection time was short, walking all the way to the First Class carriage with luggage wasn’t very convenient. After that, we tried to check the carriage position on the platform before boarding. Would I buy it again? For the same type of trip, yes. Not because First Class is necessary in Switzerland, but because our trip involved many train journeys, a young child, an elderly parent and luggage. If I were staying in only one or two places, I would calculate the cost first before buying it. Chur is a small town in Switzerland. It's cute and interesting and has several museums. It also has a large outdoor swimming pool with views of the Alps.

We took the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur during our Switzerland trip. We didn’t take the full route to St. Moritz because Chur fitted our itinerary better, and honestly, five hours already felt like enough time for us to enjoy the Glacier Express experience without spending the whole day on the train. We were travelling with a three-year-old child and an elderly parent, so we arrived early at Zermatt station to find our carriage, store our luggage and settle down before departure. Since the seats were reserved in advance, boarding itself was quite straightforward. Inside, the carriage was comfortable with large panoramic windows. This made sightseeing easy, although reflections on the glass sometimes appeared when we tried to take photos. The scenery changed slowly throughout the journey. We passed mountains, rivers, forests, green fields, villages and traditional houses. Not every section was dramatic, but there was usually something to look at outside. Our son enjoyed spotting cows, tunnels and rivers along the way, while for our elderly parent, this became a much more relaxing day compared with sightseeing that required a lot of walking. We travelled for around five hours. It sounds long, but for us it didn’t feel too tiring. We spent the time looking outside, taking photos, eating snacks and resting. Food and drinks were available onboard, but we also brought our own snacks. Travelling with a young child, this was useful because we could eat whenever we wanted. What I liked most was that we didn’t need to keep changing trains. Instead of treating Zermatt to Chur as just another transfer, the journey itself became part of our Switzerland trip. Would I take the Glacier Express if I only wanted the fastest way to Chur? Probably not. The journey is slower than regular train connections and seat reservations are required. But if you want a slower travel day, especially when travelling with a child or elderly family member, I think it can be a very comfortable way to enjoy the scenery while still moving to your next destination. For us, Zermatt to Chur was enough. But a regular regional train (though without panoramic windows) on the same Rhaetian Railway line runs on the same tracks, with the same glacier views – no brand surcharge and no mandatory reservations. We took this train: there were literally just two of us in the carriage, the windows are slightly less panoramic, and the views are identical. The Bernina Express has larger panoramic windows that don't open, doesn't stop at all stations, requires seat reservations, and is more expensive. The regional train has slightly smaller but openable windows, you can stop at any station (more flexible), no seat reservation needed, and it's cheaper. Stop at Bernina Diavolezza station and cable car up to see the Diavolezza and Bernina glaciers: 44 CHF Continue the journey to Tirano – Hotel Albergo Gusmeroli Tirano (breakfast included), very good hotel right in the historic center of Tirano: €100 Day 7: Bormio Bus Tirano-Bormio: €2?! Arriving in Bormio, luck struck hard :D – I happened to stumble upon the Bormio Pizzoccherata, a local festival held once a year in the historic center of Bormio, where locals dress in traditional costumes and eat, sing, and drink together at a table over 800m long running through the historic center. An exceptional atmosphere throughout the day. Hotel Rezia, super good hotel perfectly located between the historic center and the town of Bormio, with a balcony room offering a magnificent view of the mountains (breakfast included): €92.10 Day 8: Ortisei (The Dolomites) Transport Bormio-Ortisei – this is the longest and most tiring part of the whole trip: 7 hours of transport, 4 buses and 2 trains, including the bus that zigzags up the famous Stelvio Pass road – beautiful scenery again: €8.50 + €3.50 + €4.50 + €7.50 + €11 + €7 Arrived in Ortisei at 4pm, check-in at Hotel Fortuna, excellent hotel with room and balcony offering a breathtaking view of the mountains: €388 for two nights (city card + breakfast included) Cable car to Seceda (the most panoramic view of the Dolomites): €52 Day 9: Ortisei Cable car to Seceda + paragliding (20 minutes of pure joy and adrenaline): €180 + €30 + €39 Cable car to Alpe di Siusi: €23 Walk down from Alpe di Siusi – over two hours of hiking down Day 10: Venice Transport Ortisei-Venice: 5-hour journey, 1 Bus + 3 Trains: €19 + €10.35 Hotel Principe, average hotel next to the Grand Canal in Venice (breakfast included): €100 + €4.50 Day 11: Venice-Lyon Bus to airport: €10 EasyJet flight Venice-Lyon: €63 There you go – the trip lasted 11 days and cost me around €2900. On the day of my departure, no hotels or trains were booked in advance. During the trip, I made a few hotel reservations one or two days ahead, especially in the small towns in the Alps. For trains in Switzerland, you should definitely opt for discounted tickets for routes outside the Bernina Express line – much cheaper than standard fare tickets. You need to buy them a day in advance and online. The route is easily doable by anyone (only the Bormio-Ortisei and Ortisei-Venice legs are a bit tiring). The trip was done with a 4kg backpack and a small chest bag. I used Google Maps for directions, Deepseek (AI) for activities/outings/discoveries, trip.com/official sites/Google Maps for hotel bookings, and the "Mobile CFF" app for trains in Switzerland. Seat reservations open **93 days before the travel date**, and popular routes can fill up very quickly during peak season. The Golden Pass Line runs along Lake Geneva, the Glacier Express crosses 291 bridges, the Bernina Line travels from snowy mountains to palm trees, and the Jungfrau Railway goes straight to the top of Europe. Each route has its own guide and fans. But honestly—the train is just a means of transport; the small towns along the way are the real destinations. On the Golden Pass train, you can only see the snowy mountains through the glass. The train passes through Lungern in just 3 minutes. What you capture is the fleeting blue-green outside the window. What if there was a way—not bound by a timetable, stopping as long as you want—to slowly enjoy the snowy mountains of Grindelwald, the waterfalls of Lauterbrunnen, and the turquoise lake of Lungern? 🏔️ First, about the trains: how to choose among the 4 classic lines Golden Pass Line Montreux ↔ Lugano, about 5 hours, featuring views of Lake Geneva, Alpine passes, and terraced vineyards. A great choice for first-time visitors to Switzerland. Glacier Express St. Moritz ↔ Zermatt, about 7.5 hours, crossing glacial valleys. It’s the slowest scenic train in the world, perfect for train enthusiasts. Bernina Express Chur ↔ Lugano, about 4 hours, passing through a UNESCO World Heritage section, showcasing tropical plants and glaciers in one frame—three landscapes in one trip. Jungfrau Railway Interlaken East ↔ Jungfraujoch, about 2.5 hours, the experience at the top of Europe is truly breathtaking but also the most expensive. If you can only pick one, the Jungfrau Railway offers the most intense experience; the Golden Pass Line offers the best value; and if you want to see the World Heritage section, the Bernina Express is worth a special trip. But the most recommended way to experience Switzerland is not by train. 🚐 On Day 5, we had a full-day private car In our 7-day, 5-night France-Switzerland itinerary, one day looked like this— Zurich → Interlaken region → Zurich. Full-day 10-hour private car. There are places where trains can’t reach: Lungern The lake’s color shifts from blue to green with the light, and the small town of a few hundred people is as quiet as a fairy tale. If you’re on the train, it only passes by in 3 minutes. If you get off, you can stare at that blue-green all day. Lauterbrunnen 72 waterfalls cascade down the valley, a hiker’s paradise. Most tourists rush through by train, very few actually stop—because you can’t see the waterfalls from the train station; you have to drive in. Grindelwald The gateway town to the Alps, with flower-adorned wooden houses nestled at the foot of snowy mountains. Staying here feels completely different from just passing through by train. Lake Brienz “Switzerland’s purest alpine lake,” its water is so blue it seems unreal. The woodcarving town sits quietly on the shore, with steamships cruising the lake. Trains pass through these towns, but private cars stop and stay. That’s the simple difference. 📝 Practical Information About transportation Day 5 includes a full 10-hour private car; overtime fee is 100 euros/hour. Days 3 and 4 are free independent travel with no car or guide, so it’s recommended to plan walking routes in advance. About trains Swiss train tickets are expensive; the Jungfrau Railway one-way ticket costs about 220 CHF per person. Transfer to the iconic red Glacier Express in Chur. Although it's pricey, I highly recommend first class. The seats are wider. The 2+1 layout means that if you're traveling with someone, grab a single window seat facing each other early; the privacy and the view are much better. 🍽️ Dining: The food was average, but the experience was divine (pp. 5-6) I pre-ordered lunch on the train. To be honest, the taste was standard "tourist food," nothing amazing. But!
