Northern Portugal surprised me. I expected seafood and wine — but some of my favourite meals ended up being simple local spots and comfort food. If you only have limited meals in Porto, Braga and Aveiro, these are the ones I’d prioritise. 🥪 You Can’t Leave Porto Without Trying Francesinha Porto’s legendary (and unapologetically soggy) sandwich. Layers of steak, ham, linguiça sausage and roast meat — completely covered in melted cheese and drowned in a rich tomato-and-beer sauce. You either fall in love with it… or spend the rest of the trip thinking about it. 🌭 Porto’s Ultimate Snack 📍 Gazela Cachorrinhos (€4.60) Thin crispy baguette filled with fresh sausage, linguiça, melted cheese and spicy piri-piri sauce — pressed and cut into bite-sized pieces. My recommendation: Pair it with fries and beer. 🍚 The Seafood Dish Worth Ordering 📍 Bolhão a Gosto — Comida Tradicional ✨ Arroz de Marisco (Seafood Rice) 💰 €36 for 2 pax (more than enough) Fresh seafood, generous portions and excellent value. Ridiculously good. After trying several across Portugal… This was easily my favourite. Don’t let fancy interiors fool you. 🥚 Portugal’s Most Underrated Sweet 📍 Peixinho (Aveiro) ✨ Ovos Moles (€1.80) Sweet, soft and uniquely Portuguese. Hands down my favourite version. 🌟 Bonus Stop — McDonald’s Imperial (Porto) Possibly the most beautiful McDonald’s I’ve visited. Stained glass, chandeliers and interiors that feel more like a historic café than fast food. Try one of the local menu items. Visitors can explore landmarks such as Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stroll through charming streets, and enjoy a lively mix of history, tradition, and modern student life thanks to the presence of University of Minho. Today, Braga is recognized as one of Portugal’s most dynamic and welcoming cities. I would say that 2 days are enough for Braga, one for city center, and one for Bom Jesus do Monte and nearby. Taking a trip from Porto to Braga and Guimarães felt like stepping deeper into the soul of Portugal. Both cities are just a short journey away, but each offers a completely unique experience that beautifully complements Porto’s charm. Braga is often called the spiritual heart of Portugal, and you can feel it in the atmosphere. The highlight for me was Bom Jesus do Monte—with its breathtaking baroque staircase winding up the hillside. The city itself is elegant and relaxed, with beautiful churches, leafy squares, and a timeless feel that invites you to slow down and soak it all in. Guimarães, on the other hand, feels like walking through a perfectly preserved piece of history. #falladventures Spending a day in Braga felt like stepping into a charming blend of history and vitality. The city’s old-world atmosphere is captivating, with elegant churches, cobbled streets, and lively squares filled with locals and visitors alike. The iconic Bom Jesus do Monte, with its grand staircase and sweeping views, was truly breathtaking. Braga also surprised me with its youthful energy, cafés buzzing with conversation, street musicians, and boutique shops lining the lanes. It’s a city where the past and present coexist gracefully, making every stroll a discovery and every moment feel timeless.

#September2025 This four-star Mercure Hotel has an incredible location! It's right next to Braga's old town, about an eight-minute walk away, making it incredibly convenient for sightseeing. Also, there's a Pingo Doce supermarket nearby, perfect for grabbing snacks, drinks, or simple breakfast items. There are also plenty of shops and restaurants nearby, so you never have to worry about running out of food! Rooms and Facilities: Comfortable and Thoughtful The rooms were new and clean, and the beds were incredibly comfortable. Even better, the hotel staff were incredibly friendly and made everyone feel comfortable. The hotel's design is minimalist, but the highlight is definitely the rooftop pool and gym on the 8th floor! After a workout or hike, you can go for a swim and relax—it's a real treat. Plus, it has its own parking lot, a real plus in downtown Braga! Dining: The à la carte menu was excellent, but the breakfast was average. If you have the chance to dine at the hotel's à la carte restaurant, I highly recommend it! Their food is truly delicious. However, the breakfast selection is quite limited. While the taste is acceptable, those hoping for a full meal may be disappointed! Minor drawback: The noise level is tolerable. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel! However, there are two minor areas for improvement: The soundproofing is not very good, and the noise from the street outside is easily heard. Those who are sensitive to noise may want to consider this option. The rooftop pool could use a few more lounge chairs; it was a bit difficult to get a spot.

Congregados Basilica - A 16th-century cathedral located right in front of Park Avenida Central. 2. #2024wish Braga is the fifth largest city in Portugal and an hour away from Porto. Located on the western side of Braga's historic centre, the republic square is one of the most important public spaces in Braga. The lively square is surrounded by cafes and restaurants. The most iconic structure is the water fountain in the middle of the square, which is converted to house a giant Christmas tree during winter. There is also a beautiful park (Jardim da Avenida Central) where you can find a 3-storey McDonald's and a children's playground next to it. #freehotelstay Bom Jesus do Monte is a notable sanctuary and pilgrimage site situated on a hill in the outskirts of Braga, a historic city in northern Portugal. Inscribed in 2019 as a UNESCO world heritage site, the sanctuary is completely accessible to the public and does not charge any entrance fee. The most iconic feature of the sanctuary is the monumental Baroque stairway leading to the Church of Bom Jesus do Monte. We took a taxi which send us to the church directly we so skipped climbing up the 577 steps on the 116-metre stairway. Instead we walked down the stairway after visiting the sanctuary complex. An alternative way to reach the church is by taking the water-powered funicular. Casa na Caniçada is located in a densely wooded area next to the Caniçada reservoir, in Vieira do Minho. The volumetry of the existing building was the starting point for the definition of the new volume consisting of three floors and where a traditional single-family housing program is distributed. The most intimate program is located on the highest floor, while the social program is spread over the remaining two. On the lower floor, the house “opens up” to the site, as an invitation to enjoy the surrounding nature. But it is on the middle floor that the house takes on greater expression through two large openings in opposite facades - one ensures the entrance to the house and the other “frames” the landscape facing the reservoir. Together, they ensure a greater sense of continuity between the exterior and the interior and the visual permeability between the arrival path - through the densely wooded hillside — and the Caniçada reservoir. Underrated city! The locals were friendly, the food was unusually cheap and the sites were lovely. Also it's nowhere near as busy as Porto and Lisbon, so if you want somewhere quieter, historical and with good food consider Braga!

São Bento Train Station (Estação de São Bento) in Porto isn't just a transport hub; it's a landmark in itself, famous for its 20,000 azulejo tiles depicting Portuguese history. Tucked into the side alcoves and small café counters (the Cafetaria São Bentoinside the main hall or the newsstand-bar to the left as you enter) are a couple of TVs usually tuned to news—but ask nicely, and during World Cup weeks they'll flip to the early group-stage match if it's on. I had a morning connection from Porto to Aveiro for a later game, but the 11:00 kickoff (a classic South American early slot) was too good to miss—so I bought a meia de leite(half coffee/half warm milk—very Porto) and a bola de Berlim(custard-filled doughnut), parked myself at a marble bistro table with a diagonal view of the café's wall-mounted screen, and caught the first 35 minutes of Argentina vs Saudi Arabia while listening to the echo of station announcements and the shuffle of commuters' shoes on those iconic tiles. It's not a place to cheer loudly—be respectful of fellow passengers—but you can absolutely track the score, see the goals on replay during the ad break, and feel the station buzz when something big happens (locals willglance up and nod knowingly). Trains to Lisbon (Alfa Pendular, approx. 2h40), Guimarães, Braga all depart here; buy CP tickets in advance on match days. My reason for including this: sometimes you're in transit and refuse to miss a second of the tournament. São Bento lets you steal a glimpse in one of the most beautiful stations on earth, surrounded by 1906 azulejos telling Portugal's story while a new one unfolds on the pitch. Braga felt slower, quieter and completely different from Porto — with historic streets, local food and one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Portugal. Take your time before continuing to explore. ⛪ Continue Exploring Braga After brunch, continue through the historic centre and step into Braga’s churches. One thing I enjoyed in Braga was how walkable everything felt. 🥟 Snack Stop — Casa Nacional de Salgados Before heading uphill, make a quick stop. Order: 🐟 Bolinho de Bacalhau (€0.65) Easily my favourite Bolinho de Bacalhau in Portugal — and cheaper than the ones we tried in the bigger cities. 🚍 Head to Bom Jesus do Monte From Braga city centre, take Bus 2 and continue up via the funicular. 🎫 Funicular tickets: One way — €2.50 Return — €4 💡 My tip: Take the funicular up and walk down. The best views aren’t only from the top — they’re along the iconic staircase as you make your way down. ⛪ Bom Jesus do Monte One of the most beautiful places we visited in northern Portugal. My tip: Try one of the local menu items before heading back. I visited Braga after my trip from Lisbon, and I have to say two days and one night were simply not enough to fully experience the beauty of this city. Every corner of Braga feels picturesque and incredibly romantic. During my stay, I visited the famous blue-colored church, which was absolutely stunning and unique. One of the highlights of my trip was taking the funicular train and elevator up to Bom Jesus do Monte. The view from the top was breathtaking and truly unforgettable. I also spent time walking around the peaceful lake nearby, enjoying the calm atmosphere and trying some local food along the way. Another memorable experience was exploring the coastal area. The scenery along the beach was beautiful, and I visited the iconic tower that has been going viral, it’s even more impressive in person. Seeing the train passing through that area added a special charm to the whole experience. Braga is the kind of place where you can simply walk around and feel amazed by every detail, architecture, nature, and atmosphere all come together perfectly. I also managed to capture some incredible panoramic views from above, which I highly recommend doing if you visit. Food-wise, I tried several local dishes and had a great experience overall. I’ll be sharing more about an all-you-can-eat restaurant I discovered here, which I found to be very worth it. Overall, Braga exceeded my expectations. It’s a destination I would definitely return to, as my short stay didn’t feel like enough to truly soak it all in. Right next to it is a historic funicular with over a century of history, which remains fully operational to this day. The mountain air is incredibly fresh.
