Cusco is a must-visit city on your way to Machu Picchu. It is a city full of history and charm. While Machu Picchu is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the ancient city of Cusco should not be overlooked! 🗓️ Itinerary: 🌞 The Temple of the Sun is one of the main attractions in Cusco, where you can learn about the transition of the Inca people from worshiping the Sun God to adopting Catholicism. The old town of Cusco is centered around Plaza de Armas, an incredibly beautiful square! The churches here have a unique style compared to those in other South American countries, with red bricks as the main feature. Around the square, you can easily spot traces of Inca civilization, the most famous being the Twelve-Angled Stone, which perfectly showcases the precision of ancient Inca architecture.

This trekking route is free from most tourist as there’s no convenient facilities for trekkers at all. I went there in 2019, and had met totally 6 trekkers along the way of my 3N4D trek. The nature was so beautiful and local people were so pure. It’s like Peru in multiverse. After visiting crowded Machu Picchu, this place just felt like another world. There’s a bus coming to a trailhead directly from Cusco, so it’s not that difficult to come here, but the trail was not well marked, so it’s better to come with someone who knows the way. #travel #trekking #peru

2024.08.26 Today, we had a very leisurely day in Cusco. In the morning, we had breakfast at Café D´wasi Peruvian Coffee. The coffee wasn't particularly impressive, and the breakfast was just average, feeling somewhat overrated. After breakfast, we visited Convento Santo Domingo, with an entrance fee of 20 soles (approximately 170 TWD). This is not included in the ticket package! So you have to pay extra, but the price is not expensive, and we spent quite a long time inside! No wonder it is rated as one of the must-visit attractions in Cusco! It is a Spanish colonial monastery built on the site of Qorikancha. Qorikancha was the most important Temple of the Sun in the Inca Empire, and it is said that the walls and courtyards of the temple were once covered in gold. Its name comes from the Quechua language, meaning "Golden Courtyard" or "Golden Area," and it was the religious and astronomical center of Cusco. It not only worshiped the sun god Inti but also included temples for the moon, stars, rainbow, and thunder. When the Spanish conquered Cusco in 1533, they demolished the Qorikancha temple to express their victory and built the Santo Domingo Monastery on its foundation. Although most of the metal ornaments were melted down and looted, the foundation stones of the Inca architecture were preserved and became part of this colonial building. The combination of the two creates a strong cultural contrast and shows how the conquerors integrated Inca civilization with Christian civilization. Interestingly, the Inca stone walls of Qorikancha were treated with special techniques, and the stones were precisely cut and polished to fit perfectly without the use of mortar, remaining stable even during strong earthquakes. Even when Spanish buildings were damaged in earthquakes, these Inca stone walls remained standing, demonstrating the superb Inca architectural techniques. Today, this complex not only showcases the architectural features of the Inca and Spanish colonial periods but also houses a large number of artifacts and artworks. For lunch, we randomly found a cheap local restaurant, spending only 9 soles per person (about 75 TWD), which was both cheap and filling. Next, we went to the Traditional Textile Center of Cusco, which is a center for the preservation and promotion of traditional Cusco weaving techniques. You can see local women using handlooms to weave beautiful alpaca and wool fabrics and demonstrate ancient dyeing techniques. These traditional crafts are passed down through generations, and the patterns and colors of the textiles are rich in culture and history. This place is not only a great place for shopping but also a window into understanding Andean culture. In the afternoon, we suddenly had no plans. My friend had been thinking about getting a tattoo for the past few days, so we decided to get one! It just so happened that the tattoo artist we met a few days ago was nearby. She chose a design with Peruvian characteristics and got the tattoo done very spontaneously. We spent some time sunbathing at Plaza de Armas, the heart of Cusco, surrounded by historic buildings and restaurants, often a gathering place for tourists and locals. In the evening, we went to Plaza Mayor Cusco Restobar for a few Pisco Sours and enjoyed a delicious dinner. The whole day passed by so leisurely and pleasantly. Tomorrow, we will finally start the journey I am most looking forward to—the exploration of the Sacred Valley of the Incas! This trip will include the spectacular Moray terraces and the mysterious Salinas de Maras salt mines, and the day after tomorrow, we will visit the highlight of this trip, Machu Picchu. 2024.08.21 Yesterday I bought a 10-day package to Cusco, which includes tickets to many Inca cultural sites and different areas around Cusco. Today I came here specifically to explore these ruins. A half-day tour costs about US$20-25 per person, and you will be taken to see four or five ruins in 3 to 4 hours. However, I personally don’t like traveling with a tour group, because every time after listening to the explanation of these ruins, I can’t remember much. In addition, it becomes difficult to take pictures when a group of people appear in the same place at the same time. Therefore, I chose to take a taxi up by myself, which cost about 16 US dollars. If you want to save money, you can actually take the bus, the fare is only 2 soles (about NT$16). 🚖🚌 My first stop today was *Tambomachay*, a site primarily dedicated to water worship and said to be a resting place for the monarchs of the Inca Empire. It is located in the Andes Mountains, about 7 kilometers from downtown Cusco. I took a taxi directly from the hospital where I originally planned to get the vaccine. The taxi fare was about 55 soles (about NT$470). Located at an altitude of 3,700 meters, the entire site consists of a series of aqueducts, canals and several waterfalls flowing out of the rocks. The Incas demonstrated amazing engineering skills, and the most interesting thing is that the two waterfalls they designed are completely synchronized. If you place two bottles under each waterfall, they will be filled with water at the same time. Such craftsmanship is truly amazing! 🌊✨ After finishing Tambomachay, I decided to walk to *Puka Pukara*. Although the walk took less than 10 minutes, the scenery along the way was so beautiful that I kept stopping to take pictures. The archaeological site is called the "Red Fort" due to the red color of its stone surface. Although it is mostly ruins, according to historians, it may have been a military fortress or a rest stop for travelers or messengers during the Inca period. Every stone seems to tell a story from the Inca era, and even though only ruins remain, one can still feel its past glory. 🏰🔴 Next, I chose to take the bus to the next attraction, Q‘enco Archaeological Complex. The journey only takes 5 minutes and the fare is 1 sole. Google shows that it takes 1 hour to walk down the mountain. This is an important Inca religious ceremony site, where ceremonies were once held to commemorate the main gods of Inca culture. Now most of what remains of the site are the carved rocks that could not be destroyed by the Spanish. You can imagine the roads, aqueducts, walls and even the legendary underground sacrificial chambers that were once used for rituals or to preserve the bodies of Inca nobles. Such ruins make people wonder about these mysterious ancient rituals. 🪨⛪ Next, I continued to walk to the only attraction that did not require a ticket today - *Mirador desde el Cristo Blanco*, where there is a huge and eye-catching white statue of Jesus. Standing here you can overlook the entire city of Cusco. Although I am not a devout believer, the scenery here is still worth seeing. I took some photos and left. 📸✨ We had originally planned to go to *Saqsaywaman*, but on the way to the white statue of Jesus, we found that we needed to walk up for about 15 minutes, which was too tiring, so we decided to come back tomorrow to explore this attraction closest to the city center. 🏞️ After finishing today's tour of the ruins, I slowly walked back to the city center, which took about half an hour. After returning to the city center, I went to the Central Market, which I frequent most, to have lunch. But maybe because I had been exposed to the sun all day and had a little heatstroke, my appetite was not very good. After a quick meal, I went back to the hotel and took a two-hour nap. After waking up, I felt much better. 😴 When I went out to find food at night, I happened to see a restaurant having a Happy Hour promotion. Two glasses of Pisco Sour were only 30 soles, which was much better than the 22 soles I paid for one glass before! I was so happy that I wanted to order a burger to go with it, but I accidentally ordered fried cheese with avocado sauce, which surprised me. But since I had ordered it, I just finished it. Cusco, a beautiful colonial style city in Peruvian Andes Mountains. It's old style Spanish houses and cobblestone roads. Locals such a cholas walk around and bask in the street corners. This was an adventure of a lifetime. To get here was a real trek. Flying to Cusco which is 3400m above sea level. Adjusting to the altitude and then taking a bus to a town called Ollanytambo, then a train ride along the river through the mountains to the town at the foot of Machupicchu called Agua Calientes. A good tour for about 3 hrs to understand the history of the city. Definitely a place to visit and cross of your bucket list. #machupicchu ##cusco
