Orange County’s most stunning art museum
If you think art museums are all the same, Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) might change your mind. Located in Costa Mesa, this contemporary art museum is worth visiting even before you step inside. Its striking architecture, bright open spaces, and free admission make it one of the best cultural attractions in Orange County.
The museum opened its new home in 2022 at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Designed by the internationally acclaimed architecture firm Morphosis, led by Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne, the building is impossible to miss. Instead of a traditional box shaped museum, OCMA features sweeping white curves, dramatic cantilevers, and a sculptural exterior that almost looks like a piece of modern art itself. As you walk around the building, every angle feels different, making it one of the most photogenic landmarks in Orange County.
Inside, the architecture continues to impress. Floor to ceiling windows bring in natural light, while the spacious galleries create a calm environment that lets the artwork take center stage. The museum focuses on modern and contemporary art from California and around the world, with a collection of more than 4,500 works spanning painting, sculpture, photography, video, and immersive installations. Rotating exhibitions mean there’s usually something new to discover with each visit.
I found myself just as fascinated by the building as the exhibitions. The clean lines, open spaces, and flowing design create a museum that’s enjoyable to wander through, even if you’re not a regular museum visitor. Outside, the large plaza and reflecting pool offer even more opportunities for photos and a chance to appreciate the building’s unique form from different perspectives.
