Shangluo's Only Seriously Underrated Summer Paradise
Shangluo is nestled on the southern slopes of the Qinling Mountains, boasting a wealth of attractions including canyons, waterfalls, karst caves, ancient villages, and ancient Qin-Chu towns. It offers a cool and refreshing escape from the summer heat, perfect for a 3-day getaway. The attractions are somewhat scattered, so driving is the preferred option. High-speed rail reaches Shangluo North Station; hiring a car is recommended for traveling to various scenic spots.
Day 1: Explore the spectacular canyons and karst caves. Head straight to Jinshi Grand Canyon, a 5A scenic area. Bailong Gorge and Heilong Gorge feature continuous streams and waterfalls. The canyons are deep and secluded, shaded by lush trees. Stroll along the boardwalk, enjoying the cool stream water – a perfect place to escape the heat and refresh your spirits. In the afternoon, visit Zhashui Karst Caves, a large-scale karst cave system in northern China. The stalactites and stalagmites in Foye Cave and Tiandong Cave are incredibly diverse. The temperature inside the caves is consistently low, so remember to bring a light jacket. Take a detour to Zhongnan Mountain Village, where ancient-style buildings nestle against the mountains and beside the water, and street food abounds, allowing you to experience the vibrant atmosphere at the foot of the Qinling Mountains. You can stay overnight in Zhashui to enjoy the tranquil mountain night.
The next day, explore ancient towns steeped in Qin and Chu culture. In the morning, visit Dihua Ancient Town, the hometown described by Jia Pingwa. The Song-Jin Street and Erlang Temple preserve a thousand-year history, with lotus ponds, ancient bridges, and flowing water, immersing you in the ancient charm of the Shangyu Road. Afterwards, head to Mancheng Pass Ancient Town, a water and land port at the border of Qin and Chu, featuring the unique Mandarin Duck Double Opera Stage, where Qin and Chu operas blend. The old cobblestone streets and ancient buildings are well-preserved, with a relaxed atmosphere and minimal commercialization. In summer, experience Danjiang River rafting, drifting along the river through the green mountains, a refreshing and stress-relieving experience. If time permits, visit Fengguan Mountain Grottoes, where numerous Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist caves are carved into the rock walls, offering stunning views of the unique Danxia landforms.
On the third day, we headed to a mountain paradise 🌄. In the morning, we visited Niubeiliang National Forest Park, with its dense primeval forests, the babbling brooks along the Antelope Valley trail, and the chance to witness a sea of clouds if we were lucky. The air was filled with negative ions, making hiking and breathing in the fresh air incredibly therapeutic. For those yearning for a Taoist temple amidst the sea of clouds, head to Tayun Mountain. The golden-roofed Taoist temple perched on a cliff is breathtaking and awe-inspiring, with swirling clouds creating a fairyland-like atmosphere. If you prefer less-traveled scenery, you can visit Moon Cave, a giant karst cave with interconnected caverns, offering unique karst landscapes. Before returning, we visited the Shangluo Museum to learn about the rich history of the Qin-Chu cultural exchange.
🍜Don't miss the delicious food in Shangluo😋: Must-try dishes include Zhashui potato cakes, Shangzhou black noodles, Shangzhi meat, Shenxian jelly, and Shanyang mutton soup with bread—the fresh and flavorful mountain farm dishes are incredibly delicious.
💡Travel Tips: The temperature difference between day and night is significant in mountainous areas, so bring a light jacket 🧥; the floors inside caves are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes; there are many mosquitoes in the canyons during summer, so prepare mosquito repellent; it is recommended to buy tickets for popular scenic spots in advance during holidays; mountain roads have many curves, so drive slowly.
