Reflections on Touring Xiong'an Baiyangdian
Baiyangdian’s natural scenery, red history, ecological changes, and the development of Xiong'an intertwine in these reflections, painting a picture of the water town’s beauty while expressing historical insights and contemporary sentiments.
Setting foot on the land of Xiong'an Baiyangdian and boating across its vast misty waters, I truly understood the unique charm of the "Pearl of North China." This body of water nestled in the heart of the North China Plain embodies the vastness and desolation of the northern lands, the gentle grace and liveliness of the south, and carries the weighty red memories and vibrant vitality of the era. After the tour, my heart was filled with awe and emotion.
In the early morning, Baiyangdian is shrouded in light mist, the water surface like a mirror reflecting the sky, clouds, and endless reeds, resembling a softly spreading ink painting. Boarding a small boat and slowly drifting into the heart of the lake, the oars break the calm water, creating ripples. The gentle sound of oars dipping and the occasional bird calls from the reeds isolate you from the clamor of the world. Gazing afar, thousands of acres of reeds sway with the wind, rolling like green waves, stretching endlessly. When the lotus flowers bloom, the ten-mile lotus fields stand tall and elegant, pink and white intermingling, lotus leaves spreading wide. A gentle breeze carries the fragrance of lotus across the lake, making one momentarily feel as if they have wandered into a southern water town, yet the crisp wind and expansive view reveal the grandeur unique to the northern marshlands.
The beauty of Baiyangdian is not only in its picturesque natural scenery but also in its deeply ingrained red spirit. Walking through the Yanling Team Memorial Hall, yellowed old photos and weathered relics slowly unfold the years of fierce resistance during the war. Back then, the brave Yanling Team soldiers relied on Baiyangdian’s complex ditches and waterways, paddling lightweight eagle boats, hiding under lotus leaves and among reeds, skillfully maneuvering through the marshes to strike at invaders. Their courage and sacrifice protected this land with their blood and lives. The clever bravery of the young soldier Zhang Ga and the fearless resilience of the Yanling Team have long become the most vivid red symbols of Baiyangdian, adding a heroic and tragic grandeur to this beautiful waterland. Standing here, looking back at history, I am filled with reverence and understand that the peaceful times we enjoy today were won through the hardships and sacrifices of our predecessors.
Today, Baiyangdian is experiencing unprecedented new vitality amid the construction wave of the Xiong'an New Area. Once tested by ecological challenges, Baiyangdian has been restored to clarity through the New Area’s commitment to ecological priority and green development. Measures such as returning farmland to lakes, dredging, and ecological water replenishment have been implemented, leading to continuous water quality improvement. Rare birds frequently appear, fish swim near the surface, and flocks of birds gather once again, unveiling an ecological picture of "blue and green interwoven, water and city integrated."
Boating on the lake, on one side lies the simple charm of the water village—boatmen leisurely rowing, fishermen fishing at ease—harboring the purest warmth of the water town; on the other side, modern buildings rise in the distance in Xiong'an New Area, orderly and harmonious, coexisting beautifully with the water town scenery. The ancient water town meets the city of the future here, history and the pulse of the times blend, allowing Baiyangdian to retain its millennia-old gentleness and depth while brimming with the vigor and vitality of progress.
As the sun sets in the west, the afterglow scatters over the water, sparkling waves, and the reeds are bathed in warm golden light, making Baiyangdian even more tranquil and enchanting. This trip to Baiyangdian was a feast for the eyes, a remembrance of red origins, and a reflection on the changes of the times. This water body has witnessed the indomitable spirit of wartime, undergone ecological restoration, and now carries the beautiful vision of Xiong'an New Area’s construction. It showed me how natural beauty, historical charm, and developmental strength can blend so perfectly, filling me with infinite anticipation for this future city and this beautiful water town.
The wind of Baiyangdian, carrying the scent of lotus and the rhythm of reeds, brushes past history and blows toward the future. This journey was not only a visual feast but also a spiritual cleansing, allowing me to understand the essence of Xiong'an and feel the power of the times amidst the mountains and waters.
